Airmail101 Posted July 5, 2017 Posted July 5, 2017 ....with a username that has been spelled correctly this time. I'm assuming this is the new Ubizoo? So where should I start, BoS or BoM? Best HOTAS these days? Is Hyperlobby still de rigueur? Is RayBanJockey still alive?
Jason_Williams Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 This is not a new Ubizoo, but feel free to engage in conversation with others. Jason
=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Answering your questions best I can: No, BoS, T16000m from what I've heard for the price, Not for BoS, and I don't know. I started with BoS as a new person to flight sims and I find it interesting when people come back from a hiatus from 1946. Years ago. Wow. Neat.
Finkeren Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Hi and welcome I'm sure you'll have a great time here. In answer to your questions: BoS or BoM: Depends on what you want. BoS Premium will give you a well rounded set of planes which can stand up to all the new aircraft coming with BoK. It will also give you the Stalingrad map (summer, autumn and winter versions) for use in single player (in multi you can fly on any map) BoM gives you a very interesting but overall less capable plane set and the awesome Moscow map (autumn and winter versions) If you are looking to fly online I'll say: Go with BoS for a start. Keep in mind, that when you install the sim it installs the entire thing, so when you buy further titles you don't need to download anything, it will simply allow you access to the stuff you bought as soon as you activate your product key in your profile. Best HOTAS: Currently it's probably the Thrustmaster Warthog with Crossfire pedals (you need pedals the Warthog is not a twister stick) else the more affordable Saitek solutions (X52 or X55) or the great value-for-money T.16000M will suit you just fine but probably won't last you a lifetime. Some people swear to the old MSFF2 stick which is still the best force feedback stick ever produced, but good used examples are getting hard to find. Also: If you don't have it, get a head tracking device like TrakIR (unless you use VR) it's gonna make your life much easier. Hyperlobby: There's no hyperlobby and nothing to really replace it unfortunately. You can find information about most servers here on the forum. Else I'll say just jump into a populated server, once you've gotten used to flying and fighting in SP, read the server rules/mission description carefully and see, where you can be useful. RayBanJockey: No idea. Maybe try the member search function? Good things to know: Currently a new title, Battle of Kuban, is in production, roughly once a month a game update will be released bringing more BoK content as well as improvement to the overall sim (which affects owners of BoS/BoM as well. The campaign mode, while enjoyable, is pretty basic and could more accurately be called an advanced mission generator with medals. The missions may seem a little bland at first, but once you start increasing your "pilot level" the missions become more interesting and challenging. This entire system is about to be replaced by a proper career mode built on the Rise Of Flight model. The career mode will be made for BoK and then retroactively for BoS and BoM and will come later this year. 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 (edited) RayBanJockey has been gone for years man! He's like Elvis! Even if he did... and he put trim on a slider it wouldn't matter. IL-2: BoS trim control is way more sophisticated for that sort of thing! Edited July 6, 2017 by ShamrockOneFive
Feathered_IV Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Nice to see you again Airmail! Great to see some of the Ubi-scarred veterans back. Now where are the likes of Leitmotiv, Ploughman and Low Flyer MkIX?
Finkeren Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 I think Finkeren meant Crosswind pedals ^ Yeah Mea Culpa

Jade_Monkey Posted July 6, 2017 Posted July 6, 2017 Stay away from Saitek X55. Lots of buttons but poor quality. I cant wait to upgrade soon.

Best HOTAS these days? Is Hyperlobby still de rigueur? Is RayBanJockey still alive? Good lord! The enfant terrible of the 'Zoo returns Correct spelling? Does this mean you are now Airmail BSc (Hons) with a nice big debt to pay back? Still having woman trouble and/or falling off the mountain bike? Its not quite the Ubizoo here; you can't ask any question under the sun and get an expert answer back but its not too bad. Bear Cat is one of the mods, quite a few of us old farts are still around. Leitmotiv was around but haven't seen him for a couple of years now. Rayban jockey did actually post here once but no sign of Low_Flyer and Ploughman unfortunately. Best stick? Still one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microsoft-Sidewinder-Force-Feedback-2-Joystick-X05-63776-/182650518557?hash=item2a86d1bc1d:g:SowAAOSwDrNZW6nD Which game to get? Get 'em all. Airmail101 Posted July 6, 2017 Author Posted July 6, 2017 (edited) Well holy carp you remember a lot Arthur. Did I meet you at Duxford once? Good to see you again as well, Feathered and Tornado. I see AndyJWest is about, as is Raaaid - it's also great to see that Bearcat is still a mod! I'm still falling off my mountain bike, I took five years to graduate - due to dossing around and women. But yes, I'm now Airmail BSc (Hons), a Quality Assurance Officer and married - so I'm now responsible....apparently. I'll get myself a new HOTAS soon and boot up BoS My CH pedals apparently still work with windows 10..... Is VR a thing yet? I'm quite chuffed I've managed to find some of the old gang again. Happy days. Edited July 6, 2017 by Airmail101

Happy days. Welcome back! I went by IceFire back in the Ubi-zoo days. Needed an update on the old callsign (it dated back to early 1990s IRC days and I only picked it because it wasn't reserved on DALnet). VR is a thing now. Lots of guys are flying it with IL-2 since the official patch for it came out. I'm still on a 1080p monitor but that's ok! Seriously ... the new IL-2 is really good. You've picked a great time to come back to the series. It had a bit of a rough start but the potential was there and what it was doing was fantastic. Now it's really coming into its own. With Moscow, Stalingrad and Kuban as the East Front trifecta we're in a great place and Midway and Okinawa are slated to be the next two taking us to carriers and the Pacific.
Finkeren Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 The most important thing: At long last we have a developer that has made a habit out of never promising too much ahead of time and keeping deadlines. So much so, that there was genuine anxiety in the community when they pushed back the release of the latest update to finish their Summer sale. When was the last time you heard people freak out about a couple weeks delay in the flight sim world? But with this team you are pretty much guaranteed to get everything that is promised and most of the time quite a bit more than that. 1
Feathered_IV Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Yeah, the Devs are like a T-34 in a china shop with their deadlines. They just punch on through and not one step backwards.
216th_Jordan Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Sorry to drop in like that.. What is this "Ubi-Zoo"? Is it something like a reference to Ubisoft?
Feathered_IV Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Sorry to drop in like that.. What is this "Ubi-Zoo"? Is it something like a reference to Ubisoft? That's correct. The Il-2 Sturmovik forum on the official Ubisoft website was the thriving metropolis for fans of the series from 2001 to 2011. In the early days it earned the name Ubizoo as some of the most epic trolls made their name there, and political and social debate raged largely unmoderated. Some of the most legendary crazies like anti-hyperlobby activist Galen Thurber (described by the editor of PC Pilot magazine as: "about as mad as one man can get and still remain at liberty") carved a name for themselves and into flight sim history there. I didn't come on board there until late in 2002, when I heard there was something magical called a "patch" that may or may not exist, and promised new aircraft and other things for free. My tentative inquiries were met with pictures of Arabs at the UN saying: Noob, we don't know anything about a patch... I lurked there until somewhere into 2003 before taking an active part. Reading of many strange goings on. Like the whistleblower who revealed the Luftwaffe squad that would have is new members swear an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler "for immersion" and the periodic panty raids (pun intended) by CFS3 fanbois who would gang up in Oleg's Ready Room and try to drum the man himself out of his own forum. Others like the guy that had his wife and kids leave him because of the game - and who then logged in the same day to boast about it were commonplace and a sign of the intense addiction that surrounded the title. Things calmed down in the latter half of 2003. In part due to the cessation of the second gulf war. But mostly due to the tireless use of the banhammer, wielded by the legendary might of the moderator CrazyIvan. The pleasing teal landscape of the ubi forums became the very hub of the combat flight sim genre. You could get anything there. Learn anything, find anything - Except for updates that is. Flight sim fans were like junkies in those days. Absolutely desperate for another fix. Things eventually ran into a demise in 2011 when a massive restructuring of the Ubisoft website merged many of the Il-2 sub-forums and deleted much of the most irreplaceable and historic content. It also coincided with the release of CloD, five years after its planned release date. Most users found themselves drawn to 1c's "BanannaForum" to continue the fight there, and the old Ubizoo slipped into legend.... 3
[CPT]CptJackSparrow Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 That was a concise summary. Whatever happened to Gibbage? He made great 3d models.
=TBAS=SkyWalker77 Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 (edited) Weclome back! I used to fly on HL right after JCN shut down for good. Only place to go for Janes F-15 and F/A-18. Then Lomac and IL2 took over and I flew IL2 for a long time there with JG27. Edited July 7, 2017 by =TBAS=SkyWalker777
Gambit21 Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Interesting history Feathered - I never once poked my head in there in all my years flying the origina IL2. I did all my foruming at SimHQ before it became a useless mess itself.
