Personally I find it strange that every Spit thread features "humourous" posts from LW about how Spits will look great when getting shot down.

Did every plane get that treatment, or is it just backlash because of how (justly) popular the Spit is? Was there the same reaction from VVS players when new LW planes were announced?

I was trying to bash the Spitfire or anything, and it's not that i don't like non LW planes. Just when looking at the forum for the last 2 months i noticed a lot of excitement that I've not seen before. But i got my answer.

I think I was 5 or 6 years old, when my father gave me my first plastic kit of a WW2 aircraft. It was a Spitfire Mk. 1 (which he insisted on calling "Speedfire" - his English has room for improvement) and he proclaimed that it was "the best fighter aircraft of the war".

I was immediately hooked on WW2 aircraft, but concerning the Spit the effect was actually the opposite of what people describe here. I was actually turned off by the hype and tended to shun famous aircraft like the P-51 and Spitfire in favor of first German/Italian and then Soviet aircraft which I felt (and to some degree still do) has received an unfair amount of bad press.

The Spit is loads of fun, but its sheer popularity makes sure, that it will never hold a special place in my heart.

For me it was like that as well. My brother was very much into the American and UK planes. I wanted to balance that somewhat and got more interested in German and Russian planes. For WW2 i'm more LW minded. For post WW2, it's russian planes all the way.

Spitfire, an outstanding example plane that justifies being a sellable flyable plane.

The Spitfire is indeed something very special. In my case, I have deep rooted childhood memories associated with the Spitfire too. Of course I'm more into my own country's airforce. But my father, who was born in 37, witnessed the war in our little hometown as a boy. He saw lots of Mustangs, Thunderbolts and Spitfires preforming attack runs on our local train station and performing other low level tasks. (also shooting cows and farmers on the fields, but that's another story).

He was ever since utterly impressed by these planes, so he begun to construct and assemble RC Models since the middle of the 60s when this hobby wasn't very common. There comes me, my first memory as a three year old child, when my Father took me to the place where he and his lads flew their stuff. My Father with his big and beautiful Spitfire he had at this time and his lads with their ugly little fantasy planes. None of them were into warbirds. I was so dammed proud of my father and the Spitfire was a sight to behold. That hooked and addicted me to WWII aircraft from the very beginning of my life. ;) He also built Mustangs, Thunderbolts, Corsairs, a B-26 and stuff that was at this time (end of 70s/early 80s) very modern, like an A-10 and several Hawks. But the Spitfire was the one thing that shone above all. He even made me a little Spitfire of wood with the same colors and paintsheme like his big one. That made me so proud back then! :)

I like the title of this thread. I hope we can keep it going for the next month and beyond. :)

Yea. Maybe it could become a spine to this Forum like the "DD Today?" thread. :)
