CAPSLOCK_ON Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 (edited) Hello, Has anyone here experienced flying with 1080p resolution on a 4K monitor? I'm curious about it as I ordered a 4K screen for some work needs but I cannot (yet) afford the powerful GPU needed for a true 4K resolution gaming. I currently have a R9 270x 2 GB VRAM and its performance is adequate for current 1080p settings I'm using. The monitor hasn't arrived yet, but I thought it would be good to know in advance about any tips and advices to run BoX @ 1080p on 4K monitors without losing definition (at least no blurred edges and such). I believe it would scale up the pixels to fit nicely to the native resolution, since it is a 1:1 proportion. Is this assumption correct? Thanks! Edited June 26, 2017 by CAPSLOCK_ON
Gambit21 Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Well, I haven't scaled down to 1080p on my 4K screen because there's no need with my 1080. However be advised not to waste money on the 1080ti - the standard 1080 does beautifully at 4K.
CAPSLOCK_ON Posted June 27, 2017 Author Posted June 27, 2017 (edited) Hi, Thanks for the reply, I can't afford a 1080Ti in any way. If I had to bite the bullet I was thinking about a 1060 6 GB or even a 1070 for 4K with toned down graphic settings, but that would be at least by the end of 2017. But if the monitor can show 1080p picture expanded to 4K nicely, I can wait to get the needed sum and get an used current generation VGA next year when they are "old" and I could grab an used one for a good price. Even if I could, I wouldn't buy a new VGA nowadays, they got inflated too much due to the current cryptocoins mining bubble, esp. the AMD ones. :O Edited June 27, 2017 by CAPSLOCK_ON
SharpeXB Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) When I first got a 4K screen I figured running 1440p upscaled would look fine. But that wasn't the case. Monitors always look best at their native resolution. 1080p on a 1080p looks nice and sharp. But 1080p or 1440p on a 4K screen looks noticeably soft. It would be better to wait until you get a graphics card which can run 4K decently before giving up a 1080p screen. Also while flight sims greatly benefit from the high resolution it's not a necessity in other types of games. It looks fantastic if you can run it but 1080p is just fine for shooter games and such especially if you can run Ultra graphics & 60fps at that res vs medium to low at 4K. When moving to 4K I discovered my preference is, in order of priority 1. A smooth consistent 60fps 2. Eye candy graphic setttings 3. Resolution. I wouldn't give up the top two to get the third. It is never advised to run a monitor at a lower resolution then it's native resolution. In this case it's might be better to buy a bigger 1080p or a 1440p monitor. Grt M
GrendelsDad Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I use 40inch 4K TVs for monitors. I have had a good experience downscaling the image to 1080p. It strangely looked better at 1080p than 1440p. Maybe the way the pixels line up but also being a TV it has to down scale better due to most content being 1080. So keep that in mind. Bigger screen for cheaper than a good monitor.
CIA_Windhawk Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 Does anybody run at 4K using a 1070 card? Or is that just hopelessly optimistic?
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 4K Downscaling to 1K(1080p) keep the pixels square and minimal distortion.4K Downscaling to 2K(1440P) Results in rectangle pixels and image distortion. Does anybody run at 4K using a 1070 card? Or is that just hopelessly optimistic? Its not optimistic my GTX 1060 runs the game ok in 4K ALL Settings Ultra with ssa, hdr, mirrors, landscape on MAX(average 50 fps but not solid 60fps so i went back to 1080P)But that is not a crappy reference Nvidia model either its a good card from Gigabyte G1 GamingGTX - 1060 SOCFX-8350 @ 4.4GhzWin 7
F/JG300_Gruber Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 (edited) @ CAPSLOCK : I'm curently in your situation (4k monitor but cheap GPU) 1080p doesn't look really good, but you can use 2048x1152, which isn't bad at all. It acts a bit like If you put a FXAA filter on your screen. It's a bit weird at first because nothing is crystal sharp (most noticeable when browsing or typing documents) but you get used to it quite fast. And it looks nothing but good in game. It's been almost a year now and I still haven't changed my graphic card . The difference of framerate with 1080p is negligible as far as I can tell. Edited June 29, 2017 by F/JG300_Gruber
