Can't get out of in-game chat in multiplayer

Brief description: can't send in-game chat message without alt-tabbing game, but lose joystick controls when I do alt-tab
Detailed description, conditions: Occasionally, whenever I post a chat message in a multi-player game, I can't send it (hitting Enter does nothing) and I lose all other game inputs: joystick controls, buttons, everything. The only fix is to alt-tab the game and then come back in. When I do this I can finish sending the message and get all controls back except joystick and throttle inputs. The only fix then is to bail (if I'm not going too fast), leave server, leave game. This seems to happen when I write long messages, or two messages in a row, but not every time. I usually fly on the Wings of Liberty server.
