Let's talk about Kuban

Recommended Posts

I'm giddy about the PTO, we've talked a lot about it already, but before that we have Kuban, and this was easily my favorite Eastern Front map from the old sim.

It's the one Russian map that could pull me away from the Pacific maps for a mission build or hosting a CoOp.

Doing a bit of research, (I'm not an Eastern Front expert) it looks like there's some early air (and ground obviously) battles on this map as well the obvious air battles in 1943.

For one we have the Battle for the Kerch Peninsula - December 1942 to May 1942.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Kerch_Peninsula

So we can make good use of our early plane sets there from the previous two releases - nice.

I used to love flying the I-16 through the clouds and valleys in the old sim - just flying by the seat of my pants with mission building at the time, not caring what actually flew there and when.

However it looks like someone could build a legit I-16, 109E campaign etc on this map.

There's also the Battle for the Caucasus - July 1942 of which we can at least simulate the southwest sector of.

Which will make for a lot of fun flying along those rivers and valleys...and again making good use of our existing aircraft.

All leading up to the Kuban Bridgehead in 1943.

Still getting a handle on all of this myself. Anyone who knows this portion of the war, chime in.

I'm excited...can't wait to crack open that Kuban map and start building missions.

Shouldn't there be jets? Is this not the Kuban missile crisis?

Someone actually thought it was about Cuba when the title was announced :)

Gambit, you've covered the key parts there. Maybe the Kerch-Eltigen Operation which was an amphibious assault in November 1943.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerch%E2%80%93Eltigen_Operation

Thank you Shamrock...added to my research outline.

It's shocking how little information is available (to me, in English anyway) on this front.

I found some good maps.

https://medium.com/@Inflab/eastern-front-maps-of-world-war-ii-17f4a26545e9

As far as what types of aircraft, squadrons etc were operating in an area at given time and what they were doing - forget it.

At least that's my experience so far.

Although this is a good start https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/26223-battle-kuban/

I'm sure if I was Russian, and in Russia I'd have more reference. :)

Oh i'm looking forward to Kuban map aswell, maybe even more than to PTO.

Other than map itself i will finally be able to fly yak-1b in campaign mode and later this year/october in coop and career mode.

I-16 is nice plane to fly but yak-1b is ferrari among allies available planes and i can't wait to fly it in SP, too bad it still isn't available in PWCG.

What cheers me a lot is Kuban map will provide more engagement against naval forces, sinking ships as objective and later torpedos implementation.

Also mountains will provide some new challenges when fighting on deck.

Yes, it was funny. Ignorance is quite amusing. I didn't know there was no such as thing as the "Coke Brothers" who everybody kept talking about and why they were so interested in Neo-Con Politics. I was quite embarassed to find out about the "Koch Brothers" who nonetheless evil, are a totally different Crowd.

Yak-1B is is quite the fighter isn't it! A lot of fun to fly. Probably the most fun next to the I-16. Absolutely!

That was you! I'm glad we didn't scare you away with the snickering. ;)

Kuban is easily shaping up to be a very interesting scenario for all of us The anti-shipping and the mountains should be great too.

I'm looking forward to dive-bombing Soviet shipping, hunting U-boats, and using the foggy mountain passes to hide myself during ground attack.

I`m waiting for the coops feature, it could rejuvenate the whole series. Other than that, maybe devs can squeeze Crimea in between, not the toughest to make I would think.

You did it with elegance, so it was amusing for me too later on hehe.

Few soft jokes on me and than you encouraged me to keep being active by enlighten me with facts about Kuban.

Some folks even give examples of others in similar situation like disbelief that Stalin was from Georgia (hehe that one stayed in my mind).

Than i realised how awesome this community is, small but awesome!

I fly both sides, bombers and fighters but yak-1b is pure joy, i even ordered vkb gunfighter to enjoy it properly....btw nice review of gunfighter.

I-16 i flew a little but with joy (agile and tought little bastard), so i will definetly try Gambit's missions.

The A20 anti-shipping will be the most exciting part for me probably. I really hope there are good SP scripted missions for that sort of stuff.

Very happy to hear that! Glad you stuck around too. Curious to know how you feel about the Gunfighter when it arrives.

Gambit did I-16 missions? Single or campaign missions you mean? I'd love to fly some!

He does research about Battle of Kuban with intention to create some missions, and since he mention how he enjoy flying i-16 in the old il2 on Kuban map, it was just my guess he might do it.

I don't know was i-16 in the service during BoK.

Those were CoOp missions I created and hosted back in the day.

Focus of the A-20 Kuban campaign will be interdiction - hitting supply convoys, anti-shipping etc.

Emphasis on atmosphere and immersion just like the Ju-52 missions. Utilizing terrain to ingress/egress and avoid enemy fighters will be key in some missions.

I'm trying to research how early the A-20 showed up in that theater - were they present in the Kerch battle?

Not sure yet.

redribbon - depends what you mean by 'Battle of Kuban'.

In 1943 no, in 1941 when the Kerch battle took place yes - but were they flying in that area?

I don't know yet.

Gambit, that sounds very promising. Can't wait to try it out.

Because of the JU 87 G2 , D5 , HS 129 Both versions IL 2 3M, I always believed it was Kursk scenario I would like the best after early war. But Kuban give us sufficient so I am good.

Kuban map gives us early war as well - late 41 and early to mid 42.

Yes but then we need some HS 123 and Polikarpov I-153 to make it interesting

Hopefully those will come in a collector plane pack during the transition to Midway.

Ok - a few things.

First...I ran across this book over the weekend, which I had no idea existed.

https://www.amazon.com/Dance-Death-Soviet-Airwomen-World/dp/1585441775

EXCELLENT read, and some great stories/perspectives from the regions that we'll be flying over soon on the Kuban map.

Also, will give some of you a different perspective on "re-arm/re-fuel is useless" that we see typed here so much...not the case.

The Nightwitches landed, rearmed and re-fueled all night.

Reading these stories really makes me want the Po-2 for the Kuban map even more.

Second, I took some pictures of the Po-2 at the Heritage Flight Collection on Sat, as well as the Storch.

(it was their PTO day, and they flew the Hellcat, Zeke, Corsair, B-25 and Mustang)

The Storch pic is crap, the wings are folded, the lighting isn't great in this shot, and my Iphone camera isn't' the best to boot - but here it is anyway.

Also a shot of the A5, which I'll get to see fly in August...amazing, astounding engineering...

Storch is flying next month, A5 flying in August along with the 109E and 190 D9.

I watched the Po-2 fly a few years ago.

Anyway...I was happy to find that book - it's a great Kuban reference.

I have a new appreciation for the Po-2 and it's pilots.

There's also accounts from women Yak and Pe-2 pilots, but I'm not that far along in the book yet. :)

"re-arm/re-fuel is useless"

I would love that as an optione perhaps put in above the "FINISH FLIGHT" option when you hit escape after landing. It'd be nice to have to go out a menu then go back in to fly the same exact aircraft again. Maybe make it so that you have to taxi off to the parking areas first. It'd be neat. Also, nice pictures :good: .

That Po-2 is better/cleaner than New. Also, your Photography Skills on iPhone are amazing compared to the Crap I barely manage to even make visible.

Any chance Kuban will have a nice big fat concrete airport?

The small airfields are fun, but it's nice to have JFK International, also just for the fun of it. :)

In 1943.... maybe at Krasnodar. I'm not sure though. Maybe the subject of a dev update sometime... a tour of the some of the airfields :)

Have a look through the pics linked in this thread: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/25170-airfields-kuban-and-kerch-peninsula/.

Krasnodar II & III are grass; even the JFK-like Novorossisysk in Il-2 46 doesn't appear to be anything more than dirt runways.

I think that you will have to put up with, mainly, open fields.

Cheers.

Oh well, too bad.

Big fat airfields are fun. Fun for takeoffs and landings, fun for defence and offense, and they make for sweet eye candy.

Don't need a lot of them, but at least one would be nice. :)

Yes, I've crashed on several of them. :)

A big part of the fun in flightsims, certainly for me, is landing. That's when you rock the HOTAS in an immersive way. Anything that lends to the eye candy aspect of that is fine by me. I like big scenic airfields.

LOL, yes I have too! I fully intend to write a blog post sometime about crashing and how much of a flight sim thing that is.

Takeoffs and landings are a hoot. I really like takeoffs actually but landings are nearly as satisfying.
