Heliopause Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 In the town of Hoogeveen in the Netherlands an project is underway for a flyable Fokker D21. It's planned to make the maiden flight in the summer of 2019. Some original parts are used in the airplane. In the movie we can see Jack van Egmont and his grandson working together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdLgUsBN9-c 5
Finkeren Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Couldn't understand a word, but I suppose the wooden construction is a prototype for a later metal one? Or were the D.XXIs wings a pure wooden structure?
Feathered_IV Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 Some original parts are used in the airplane. In the movie we can see Jack van Egmont and his grandson working together. They are going halves on it? Typical 1
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted June 13, 2017 Posted June 13, 2017 (edited) Good to See this. There are a Couple of Aircraft that have been lost with Time. I would love to build a couple LaGG-3/La-5 Airframes at some Point. And a Kranich II as well. Same for the Antonov A-1 and A-2 which are comepletely lost. Edited June 13, 2017 by 6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 S! Finnish Air Force museum in Central Finland has propably the only restored Fokker D.XXI. It is not made of wood. These builders could get a lot of info about the plane by visiting it 1
JtD Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 (edited) It is not made of wood. Well then, where are the rivets? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Fokker_D.XXI_(FR-110)_Keski-Suomen_ilmailumuseo_5.JPG The D.XXI wing is made of wooden spars, wooden ribs and plywood covers. The mixed wood/steel construction was typical for Fokker aircraft at that time. Even wiki has got that right: "Following standard Fokker design practice of the period, it featured a welded steel tube fuselage that was largely covered by fabric, including the flight control surfaces; element forward of the trailing edges of the wings were covered by detachable aluminum panels instead. The wings were of a wooden construction, being composed of two box spars attached to ribs made of plywood." Edited June 14, 2017 by JtD
LLv34_Flanker Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 (edited) S! JtD. I stand corrected, you were right. Wooden wing. Profile Clark YH, wing profile thickness at centerline 20% and at tip 9%. V-angle 4.5deg(wing bottom). Surprisingly light controls, stick force gradient 0.5kp/10km/h. Pilots complained about controls being too light.. Edited June 15, 2017 by LLv34_Flanker
Heliopause Posted June 24, 2017 Author Posted June 24, 2017 btw some photos of the project can be found on this site: http://www.nederlandseluchtvaart.nl/forums/showthread.php?37317-PH-XXI-Fokker-D-XXI-replica/page13
Finkeren Posted November 13, 2017 Posted November 13, 2017 Nice. Still can't get over how heavy that construction looks.
Heliopause Posted January 27, 2018 Author Posted January 27, 2018 They now use FB to show the project: https://www.facebook.com/FlyingFokkerD21/
Heliopause Posted September 24, 2018 Author Posted September 24, 2018 I was able to visit the project and see it with my own eyes. They do a great job. She'll fly beginning of 2020 at the earliest. For progress see their FB page. https://www.facebook.com/FlyingFokkerD21/
Bremspropeller Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 I always had a soft spot for the little Fokker.

SYN_Vander Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Yeah, too bad about facebook, someone please make a decent website for this. I hope to see the D21 fly next year in an airshow! Although we have only a few those in the Netherlands.... 1
Heliopause Posted June 13, 2023 Author Posted June 13, 2023 On July 8th an event is taking place at Hoogeveen airfield with the Fokker D21 flying. The last testflights have been carried out in April/May. Heliopause Posted July 8, 2023 Author Posted July 8, 2023 Today I was able to see the D.21 flying. A short display (as the machine is new and they still have to discover/check a number of things) by Testpilot Dan Griffith. Great to see it up in the air! 7 1
