So, I moved from IL2 AEP/PF to IL2:1946 (Patch 4.13.3) a few days ago and I’m having a hard time understanding the flight modeling now. On the Quick Mission Builder I picked a BF109 G2 and went against a Spitfire 1943 (can’t remember the variant) on Average skill setting and tried doing booming & zooming to no avail. The Spit caught up with me at the top of my zoom and blew me to pieces every single time. After 5 tries or so I flew against the same plane on a BF109 K variant and got the same result. I also tried with a FW-190-D and got the same result. Finally, I even tried it with a Ta-152 and still got the same result. Then I said “the hell with it” and got into the 109-G2 again and got into a turning fight and managed to out-turn the Spit and shoot him down. What gives? I figured I’m either doing something wrong or the AI is simply cheating. Boom & Zoom worked perfectly fine against all 1943 Spitfires in IL2 AEP/PF when using german 109s and FWs.

Any thoughts?

Wow!  You've just moved onto IL2 1946?  Er..... :salute: .

OK, from the depths of my memory the flight model and A.I. behaviour has changed significantly between Aces Expansion pack and version 4.13.3.   There are nearly thirteen years between PF and the current version 4.13.3 during which the game has been continuously updated.

You will really feel the difference between what are essentially two different sims.

It's simply changed and evolved...gradually...but you've taken what is in effect a giant leap.

AI is a lot smarter now, as on expert setting their deflection shooting is out of this world.

Any thoughts on proper B & Z ? I expected the Ta152 to leave any Spit in the dust when starting at the same altitude.

One of the things changed with the AI is the dumbness with which it did counter B'n'Z. I remember early days where I could dominate a flight of a dozen AI in a single Bf109 without any problem. This is no longer the case, the AI gets as much out of the aircraft a human player does, and the Spitfire is hard to beat. Even with a K-4 (probably the best for B'n'Z), you'll need to be careful. Best altitude for trying against a Spitfire IX is around 4-5km, down low and up high they are very hard to beat.

It's odd you managed to out-turn the Spitfire, but AI isn't perfect, I guess.

Edit: Ta152 is for altitudes 9km and up with GM-1 active, make sure you don't fly it with 100% fuel. And even there the Merlin70 SpitfireIXHF is extremely competitive, if I was in the SpitfireIXHF I wouldn't hesitate if the Ta152 would offered me a 1vs1 dogfight.

If anything the changes were to make the AI smarter when countering B&Z. There's just no way to B&Z an AI Spit if you start at the same altitude, no matter what plane you choose (except jet planes I guess). When I out turned the Spit I was flying the 109G2 very close to the ground and with flaps (sometimes even take off flaps). After about 1 turn the Spit gave up on me and started to fly straight. Maybe because it was set to "Average" skill?

BTW, what patch are you running?

You should discuss this in a forum that is interested in old il 2  1946 SAS or the official site 1C  or Mission 4 today. In here you will only find a few

Thanks for the info... I'll do that. I was wondering about the low response here...
