Mmaruda Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 (edited) So I am interested, do you only limit yourself to planes or sometimes tread upon other territory? Personally, I had quite of a romance with submarine simulations and am really hyped for the upcoming Cold Waters game. Then there is the tank stuff, with periodical stints of Steel Beasts (thank the powers you can buy a month for 9 dollars) and Graviteam's stunning SABOW. Last but not least there is racing sims - not particularly competitive at them, but I do play everything - Project Cars, Raceroom, Automobilista, rFactor 2 and of course Assetto Corsa (them JDM cars and Akina 2017 track mod!). Danziger Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I have train simulator 2017. It's mainly for my son but it's pretty cool. I've been wanting a good WW1 era sea warfare sim with battleships and u boats and such. Any suggestions?
Mmaruda Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 Not really that into WW1, there is a 1914 Shells of Fury, but I have not played it. Also, I just had an idea, lets take wargame simulations into account as well. If anyone likes turn-based hex stuff, be sure to have a look at Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm - Cold War stuff, with some deep simulation behind a not complicated interface and it's kind of real time in the sense you have an orders phase and resolution phase, so planning is key. Took like a month out of my life last September.
AndyJWest Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 I'm not sure whether Elite Dangerous counts as a sim. It certainly simulates space being really, really, really big. It's what I'm playing most at the moment, anyway. As for things that are definitely sims, there's Eurotruck simulator 2 and its American cousin, there's Dirt Rally (though I've come to the conclusion that trying to play it with a gamepad isn't practical), and for something completely different, Besiege, which definitely simulates physics, and building weird contraptions, along with medieval mayhem, sheep-mutilating, exploding yaks (the four-legged kind), and the strangest take on aerodynamics I've ever seen in a game. Buggy as heck, still in early access and likely to stay that way for a long time, but probably the best bargain I've ever had game wise in terms of entertainment/price ratio. As for submarine sims, I am a great fan of Silent Hunter 3 and 4, though it's quite some time since I last fired a torpedo in anger.
Bearfoot Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Does "War in the Pacific (Admiral's Edition)" count as a sim? I think so! And perfect complement to IL2!
SCG_Space_Ghost Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 I've been learning the basics of the Graviteam games. There are a lot of details to mull over but when you start to pull things together and something good happens its a lot of fun.

Just bought France DLC ,so the ratio might change a bit.
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 BeamNG.drive for when I'm alone, drunk and tired Arma 3 for stupid fun. Train Simlator 2017, but almost entirely Steam Locos. Truck Simluator And just recently got Flight Sim World in hope that they make it a Good Platform for a Gliding Sim and Championships.
AndyJWest Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Same here 90% ED and 10% ETS2. Just bought France DLC ,so the ratio might change a bit. France is good. Some of the autoroutes seem a bit repetitive, but then I'm sure they do in real life. There is some spectacular scenery on the autoroute going northeast from Nice and along some of the southern minor roads, which more than makes up for it. As for ED, I'm just making my way back from a trip to Sphiesi HX-L d7-0, the westernmost reachable system in the ED galaxy. Lots of jumping with premium boosts and half-full tanks to get there.
AndyJWest Posted June 1, 2017 Posted June 1, 2017 Cities: Skylines Forgot that one. I played it quite a bit for a few months last year, but found it a bit samey after a time. Does the new Mass Transit DLC add much to the game?
Gambit21 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 I miss my hard-core racing Sims...Grand Prix Legends, etc. Don't have a driving wheel anymore though. I've bought in the whole Star Citizen thing, but haven't messed around with it yet. I like the Arkham Games...they're basically Batman simulations.
MineFewer Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Forgot that one. I played it quite a bit for a few months last year, but found it a bit samey after a time. Does the new Mass Transit DLC add much to the game? I like it for the eye-candy. Monorails and blimps are fun to watch.
Trooper117 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Skyrim Arma3 FSW Any of the WWII Graviteam Tactics games Combat Mision (only WWII)
Feathered_IV Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 I suddenly realised I don't play any. I can think of several I would like though, if only they existed: Vietnam Helicopter sim WW2 Resistance top-down Management/Strategy Bocage tank sim Destroyer Bridge Commander (VR walkabout with voice commands) Rise of Flight with good AI
=EXPEND=Capt_Yorkshire Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 squad. lots of updates in the works and its shaping up nice.
Gambit21 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Rise of Flight with good AI I know! It's really the biggest bummer - fix that left (or was it right?) spiral to the deck and it's the perfect sim. (Well - give me much more life in the missions as too)
JG5_Zesphr Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 (edited) Star wars battlefront II (the original and good one). Also Simcity 3000 and DCS Edited June 2, 2017 by JG5_Zesphr
kestrel79 Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 Squad, Red Orchestra, Company of Heroes, Total War, X Plane, DCS, Elite, Star Citizen, iRacing
Rjel Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 After reading an old paperback called WAR FISH (it's a good read but not terribly in depth), I found Silent Hunter 4 on Steam for a dirt cheap price. I bought it and the U-boat add on for less than $20. For a 10 year old game the graphics are pretty good. Complicated but not so much so it isn't learnable. It has brought back a lot of memories of Silent Hunter II from so long ago I don't even want to think about it. If the upcoming Pacific theater features ships in at least the detail of this older sub sim, I'll be pleased.
Bando Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 The last half year or so I'm really into "escape from Tarkov". Beta starts this summer, into Alpha still, only three maps, but what a blast...... Good stuff.

AndyJWest Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 Thought I'd bump this thread to see what fellow simmers are up to while not playing BoX, and to post a few gratuitous screenshots of the recently-released New Mexico extension to American Truck Simulator. New Mexico Scenery. ATS now features 'random events' - mostly broken down vehicles and roadworks to watch out for. You have to be a bit more alert sometimes. Backing a load onto an An-124 at Albuquerque airport. Gently does it... 1
Danziger Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I do this IRL. You couldn't pay me to play a trucking simulator lol. I imagine they don't simulate the beggars knocking on your door at the truck stops. Or the hours of sitting in traffic jams. Or Hours of Service regulations. Psychopathic drivers that will do absolutely any absurd dangerous maneuvers to get in front of a semi. Customers with docking areas too small for a sleeper truck with a 53 foot trailer. 30 minute DPF regens. Lugging a 45000lb load up a hill at 25mph to trying not to burn your brakes at 75mph going down the other side. Being governed to 65mph only to get stuck behind a truck governed at 64mph while a truck governed at 66mph takes 15 minutes to pass you. I could go on forever lol.

The AI drivers can be pretty darned stupid sometimes, and getting stuck behind something crawling along below the limit isn't that unusual. As for getting into tight docking areas, that's part of the fun, though I can imagine it is frustrating doing it for real. No beggars (or lot lizards) though. I can understand not wanting to simulate your job for entertainment, though there do seem to be a few real-life truckers who enjoy ETS and ATS. Though one I read about had to give up simming, because he was picking up bad habits. As for other drivers playing ETS or ATS, I think there may be benefits: you get a better idea of things like truck blind spots and long stopping distances, and an understanding of why trucks need to swing so wide at tight corners. It's just a game though, and clearly not for everyone.
Feathered_IV Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 I've gone back to basics. Over the past two weeks I've been playing the original Doom with GZDoom and the fantastic Project Brutality mod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWwPa13tfsg Hint: If you do the same, select all the mods and copy & paste them onto the GZdoom.exe to load them all. It sounds crazy, but it's the easiest way.
Trooper117 Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 PCars 2... plus, (not sims but) Assassins Creed, Star Wars Battlefront 2
Rjel Posted November 19, 2017 Posted November 19, 2017 I've played hundreds of hours of Sniper Elite V2. Not a sim either but I enjoy it quite a lot. I found Silent Hunter on sale a while ago on Steam and really enjoy it. For an older game it is very good graphics wise. The rolling seas are very well done. The FX of sinking ships is incredible as are the little rowboats with survivors bobbing on the waves. I truly hope when the Pacific come to the IL2 world someday that it can mimic some of this.

216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Besides Il-2 and DCS the only game I've been playing regularly is FIFA 17. I'll classify it as an arcade football simulator to shoehorn it into this thread Currently doing my final Career Mode before going to FIFA 18. Two Champions League titles, nine league titles out of eleven played, and four cups if I remember correctly... It's been nice, and having players who are currently young promises become established internationals, veteran leaders or cult heroes is a great feeling.
CanadaOne Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Nothing but BOX. I have DCS and IL2-46, but I never use them anymore. 1
dburne Posted November 20, 2017 Posted November 20, 2017 Il-2 and DCS comprise the bulk of my gaming time, all of my gaming is in VR. Other than that , just some Oculus games to fill in the gaps. Been meaning to pick up Elite Dangerous, but honestly don't know where I would find the time to learn it. Would also like to add a racing sim someday.
Mmaruda Posted November 21, 2017 Author Posted November 21, 2017 So I got the Star Wars vibe again recently and am playing through KOTOR2 and fooling around in Jedi Outcast from time to time, though there is the elephant in the room, called Tie Fighter (BEST SPACE SIM PERIOD). That said, BOx is my go to sim for several month now and I can't get enough of the Mig-3 (and yes I do own the Spitfire). DCS? You mean that one game that sort of forced me to learn to read manuals and do ramp starts with my mouse. They have a damage model for warbids yet and 60fps at all time when maxed out? Yeah well, if I was to name a few sims that caught my attention over the recent months it's going to be Cold Waters (play it now!), especially with the updates and Project CARS 2 (pretty good but the sound is sometimes horrible and I can't stand the jaggy and shadow-flickering graphics) - play Automobilista instead (once the turbo model is out). Honestly guys, I am sad to say this, but since the end of September, BOx is the only simulation game / serious game I feel is worth my time, unless you want to go full retro. As much as less serious games go, maybe Styx Master of Shadows and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Sorry, nothing new or recently updated to recommend.
[CPT]milopugdog Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I've played a little bit of Naval Action lately. I'm trying to be a pirate. I'm not any good at it, but I;m trying...
Trooper117 Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 As to TIE Fighter, I played X Wing v TIE Fighter, plus X Wing Alliance to death years ago... loved those games. If only we could have the Graphics in SW Battlefront 2 for those games, I would be all over them again!
Brano Posted November 22, 2017 Posted November 22, 2017 They sort of do some of that. It's just a game though, and clearly not for everyone. Since I started with ETS2 I pay much more respect to truckers. Often give them the way so they don't have to break or wait even I'm on the main road. And as you wrote,it's more clear to me where they have blind spots and how should I position my self to be visible when overtaking or switching lanes. The game simulates mandatory resting hours. You got fine if you ignore it and if keeping ignoring, you got even tired and catch microsleeps. I ended up many times in the ditch due to that :D What I miss is visual damage model of the trucks. And looking for Italy map expansion. But US trucks are no-no for me. For me as European they just look weird
