Video Track Editing Access

Recommended Posts

Salutations,

Beginning to get involved with video creation. Please excuse my ignorance.

How does one access the mission video tracks for editing with outside video editor? :salute:

You can't: they aren't saved as video. You need to play the tracks in-game, while recording with external software, and then edit your recordings with the video editor.

But beware!! Video editing is indeed a 'Dark Art'. A person can start with all innocence and a bright head and within what seems like minutes you realize that it is three days later and the washing is STILL out on the line and the baby hasn't been fed!!

Yea... it is probably somewhat like mission building in the Editor.

Similar, but much MUCH longer!

Please tell me what video editing software would be good for performing such dark art!

For recording track footage as regular video, I recommend Shadowplay if you have Nvidia. I switched to it after using Fraps for years and have no complaints. Fraps is a perfectly good option, but its ~$30 and the file sizes are HUGE (that's why I switched- I nearly filled a TB drive with raw footage with just a few projects in progress).

For video editing, I use Adobe Premiere Pro just because I have the Adobe suite- before that I used Windows Movie Maker and iMovie, both of which are free with Windows and OSX, respectively. iMovie seemed to have more features, but both were sufficient for chopping up video and adding basic title sequences. For anything more, I've heard there are other, better free options (Blender is one I think? that's not even primarily a video editor but I believe it can do the job). And then there's the top of the line stuff like the Adobe stuff that costs so much you probably wouldn't use it unless you had it for professional reasons or got it at a discount (my case).

Somewhat related, I've never benchmarked but from observing fans I'm pretty sure editing 1440p video in Premiere Pro works my gaming PC harder than running Il-2 maxxed out. The only other thing that gets it revving as hard is Total War with 10,000+ units on the battlefield.

Definitely easier to get started at than that IMO. I think I've tried every "extra curricular" related to this game (skinning, movies, running a server, missions, etc) and mission making is by far the hardest to get started with IMO. I've sat down with Prangster or Jim's guide 2-3 times and each time I walk away cursing under my breath in frustration (and those guides are excellent - I just hate the editor as a piece of software).

With movie making and skinning, you can usually sit down and get a basic result the first time. Even if that's just putting your name on a skin or a simple video. And then you go from there. Not so much for creating missions.

I use hitfilm express.

Very robust; quite powerful and quite free.

I gotta agree with you on that call AND with the software shout above it as well. Pretty much identical setup for capping/editing as me. Yeah, the rendering/editing on high rez/high framerate makes the GPU whine a bit but the end result is well worth it. Shadowplay or whatever it's called these days is free (if you run Nvidia, of course) and runs in at 60fps cap, what more could a fellow ask for?.

Oh yeah, is that BVB tag a reference to the Football team? I was priveleged to be at Anfield for the Europa Cup thriller a couple of seasons ago. One of THE best matches I have (or probably WILL have) ever seen!!

Yup, Heja BVB! I'm an American but became a fan while an exchange student over there in high school.

That game though  :o: my buddy had just texted me "you guys have it in the bag!" and then everything turned upside down. What a comeback, hurt me to watch tho.

Very envious you got to see it in person!

FYI, there are some great Blender video editing tutorials here. Blender is also an excellent 3-D graphics editor.
