dburne Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Well dang, have all the components for my new build I will be starting next week, and now I have a monitor going out. I run two monitors, my main is a 24" Samsung LED backlight, my secondary is a 22" Samsung LCD. The 22" is on the fritz - big time. Have had it about 7 years now. What it does, when I power pc up in the morning, the light keeps flashing on the monitor like it is in power saving mode. Then, about quite a while, like an hour or even longer, a display will come up flashing like it has a horrible refresh rate. Then, when it turns normal, it turns blank after about 2 seconds - power light still lit solid. After another hour or two, after I keep turning on and off to test, it will eventually show the display, and stay. So my choice: Replace my 22" with another. Get a 27" for my main, and move this 24" over as secondary. My 24" runs 1920 x 1080, the 27" one I am looking at run the same resolution. Curious to any thoughts? Thinking about another Samsung...
Mastermariner Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Happy with my Samsung 27" SyncMaster SA950. Can run 3D etc. Master
OBT-Psycho Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Or... wait a couple of month and go get a Oculus Rift...
LLv34_Untamo Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Well, OculusRift will need something like 4K+ resolution for it to look as good as the game does on a normal monitor (the sheer span of the view enlarges the pixels to humongous), and I doubt it will get there soon, as the next coming version will only be 1080p (the first dev version is 1200x800, so the second dev version isn't much of an improvement)... but I am hoping that it will get there. Had the privilige of testing the first dev version a month ago. The 110 degree FOV (plus 3D of course) is absolutely amazing and really well done, but the humongous pixels on the current version ruin it for me. Sorry for the side track, on the original subject: If you can cough up 1000+ euros/dollars, I would recommend a 30" monitor. The 2560x1600 resolution is something else. Personally a happy owner of a LG W3000H, which is discontinued it seems.
bolox Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Whichever monitor you get CALIBRATE IT For 27" screen I would be thinking of a higher resolution, particularly if screen is close. It will act as a 'sort of AA'. Be careful if buying a TN screen that your monitor is in the correct position for viewing (flat on/slightly above) otherwise colours and particularly blacks will look wrong- this is not an issue with the more expensive IPS/PLS screens.
Sim Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 (edited) Wait for G-SYNC monitors. Or the Oculus Rift.. or the new wave of 4k. Edited December 10, 2013 by Sim 1
dburne Posted December 10, 2013 Author Posted December 10, 2013 Thanks for the input gang, and while I could swing it, just not ready to put 600+ dollars into a monitor at this time. I may just go cheap route and get another 24" for my secondary, this one I am using as primary doing pretty good. But I might go 27', who knows!
9./JG52Ziegler Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Wait for G-SYNC monitors. Or the Oculus Rift.. or the new wave of 4k. Yep +1. BenQ 2420T is fine until I rift or some such.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 Oculus Rift just received another influx of funding...to the tune of $75 million. http://www.vg247.com/2013/12/13/oulcus-rift-secures-75-million-to-complete-consumer-model/
