Lots of discussion on the subject lately - wonder how the numbers look?

What does interest you more - the proposed Battle of Midway or a Battle of North Africa scenario including carrier operations?

And on a more general level, what are your areas of particular interest (in terms of flight sim games)?

What interests me more: North Africa, 41-43. Italy, 44.

Specific areas of interest in flight sims: Spanish Civil War, Invasion of France, Channel Front, Eastern Front, Africa Campaign, Luftwaffe uniforms and equipment, navigation, air combat tactics and doctrine.

General areas of interest in WWII: War history, field weaponry/artillery, armor, battle strategy, grand strategy, politics.

North Africa 1941-42.

Battle of France 1940.

Channel Front 1941-43.

If I have to go to the Pacific, Guadalcanal.

Guadalcanal/Solomons

When feasible I mean - hope that day comes.

Rather than North Africa I would skip right to Italy invasion 1943-1944, so there isn't so much step over the new CloD project. But between that and Pacific I voted no preference as I like both the same!

Any MTO period is much, much better than PTO for me.

The only reason I would go Italy is so I could get my Jug and maybe a B-26. Other than that I choose the Pacific.

There where Jug's in the Pacific too.

I know, but the likelihood if actually getting one in the pacific are slim unless we do New Guinea or Okinawa.

Italy has a higher chance of getting one in the game.

Maybe as a collector's plane, who knows...

To be honest my only preference is Western Europe.

As I "identify" with that particular theatre more than any other.

However, wherever BoX takes us, I'll happily fly in those environs and will purchase whatever comes out.

I do miss this green and pleasant land though, especially in VR.

This is getting a bit ridiculous. For a second put yourself in the shoes of the producers and understand they would be competing against CLOD's upcoming north africa map and planes, which are free if you own CLOD and its only 9.99$ if you don't.

It's a financial suicide.

Also, they just "partnered" (not sure whats the right term for this agreement) with team fusion and gave them the source code. They are not going to start competing with them. This is why i think the pacific is the right move, plus i would genuinely enjoy carrier ops and seeing a new set of planes.

Having said that, i would have also enjoyed something that combines Malta, Sicily, and Italy (separate maps perhaps) with P47s busting bridges, trains and strafing. Maybe some series 5 planes from the Regia Aeronautica.

I really don't agree. Many of us who are really in to the genre would purchase both to compare back and forth - that would only come as a benefit to 1C/TFS and 1CGS/777.

Just my opinion, i dont think that the number of people who buy both to compare them is a big enough group to make it a viable or even the preferred option. Even if it's viable, I think Pacific would be more profitable.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we will have to pay for the North Africa addition.

It is a typical gain vs save game. We have to consider what benefit would any MTO scenario have over PTO in terms of attracting new customers. MTO pretty much keeps the status quo as for the Luftwaffe, JG/ZG guys will buy it for Luftwaffe while in regard to Allied side it is a variable, some scenarios might be more appealing, other not - so chance of gain is smaller.

PTO is a fresh start and expansion to a completely different and unrelated (at least in case of Midway) planesets and theater. The risk is higher indeed but the benefit may be higher as well.

MTO: The entire thing.

PTO: NG 42-43

Still prefer the Eastern Front to any of them though.

All that is needed is a talented map maker to make a desert map... remember the old IL2 with the fictitious desert maps?

They were always a favourite for many.

If the dev's play their part and make a handful of collector planes to flesh out what we already have... voila! Online desert fun!

Posted

To make a proper desert map I think would also require new weather modeling. Shifts in temperature are much more pronounced and rapid in the desert.

Dust would have to be modeled in a different way as well.

What's the downside of the CloD engine? Just less advanced overall I'm guessing.

I'm genuinely asking. Just payed a visit to the sub forum and thinking about re-installing after aborting in disgust 5 years ago (wouldn't even run)

I'm guessing there's a reason that some of the Africa types are not doing backflips about CloD/TF going there. I barely have any stick time as it is, so it may not get installed regardless.

The BoX engine is from 2009 I think and the clod engine from 2011. However, the clod was abandoned and the BoX engine from RoF has been getting upgraded a lot.

I get that - just wondering what the actual experience is.

i disagree....first of all, the scenario differs greatly from the eastern front...already the landscape is completely different, and when considering a italy sicily malta map, in my view way more appealing than russia...at least totally different with a complete different atmosphere....

and then, while the JG guys will fly the same planes, they will fight total different enemies, which is also a complete different experience...and again, for me personally way more appealing than eastern front..

and then of course you would attract the western nations like the UK but also the American people, and i guess many of the latter would rather have a ETO as well compared to a PTO, as there were different types of aircraft flown on both fronts, and maybe the more popular ones in the ETO...P47, P38, P51s, are all bestsellers...and Spits and Hurris wouldnt be a bad selling argument either...and until they dont make both scenarios and compare the financial benefit we will never know whats more successfull...my guess is, ETO. just my 2cents

It's not bad. It's basically 46 with way better graphics. I like it.

Just my 2 cents worth, I voted 'no preference' and 'SW PTO '43'.
The former vote is because regardless of whichever theatre I find more historically interesting, it ceases to matter to me once I'm in the sim and flying; a dogfight is a dogfight regardless of the plane set and the terrain it takes place over.
The latter vote is just because I feel it offers a wide range of mission and aircraft types; carrier ops with naval aircraft, land based naval aircraft, land based army type aircraft, flying boats etc. etc. etc. with ground pounding, anti shipping and air-to-air. Also my nation's involvement adds an extra dimension to my interest.

The Pacific early.

But for the first question no one of the options - the first is too restrictive (a "one day" battle) and the second to generic - can be many fases of war, e.g. make sense model British carrier for operate the Swordfish used in early war in Mediterranean?  I will like, but the "market" I guess not - this fit in the premisse "North Africa scenario including carrier operations".

The last in my list is "western front" 44/45 - play this "to death" in all sims.  :(

So, most important outcome of this poll - there are 70 people in this world altogether who care enough to participate in a forum poll. And only 63 who have a preference either way. :)

Anyway, it's interesting for me to see that, when it comes to the Far East, the early part is considerably more popular than the late part. I didn't really expect that. So thanks for your opinion.

I think the response rate might have been higher if the developers hadn't already made their plans clear, though Sokol1's comment about the disparity between the options is possibly relevant too.

As for the preference for the early Pacific, I think that people may expect a more balanced plane set in such scenarios.

Early mediterranean/North Africa would be my dream flight sim, as would Guadalcanal, the latter offering such a wide range of aircraft
