ACG_pezman Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 As many of you know, I am in the process of trying to setup a dedicated NA server. I have, I believe, all the essentials of a good server but I still need quite a bit of help getting it off the ground. Question #1: How do I get another game key to run a separate Dserver? I have both emailed and sent a ticket into support but have not yet received a reply. Am I doing this wrong? Do you not need to get a separate Dserver key anymore? Is it as easy as re-downloading my copy of IL2 onto my server PC and then just running a Dserver from that PC while I fly on mine? Probably wishful thinking but it would be nice. Question #2: Is my server PC really good enough to host at most 84 players without experiencing lag? Server Rig: CPU - either i5 2500k @3.3Ghz or i5 4950 @ 3.5Ghz (leaning toward the 4950) MB - ASRock Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3 FSB @ 1600 RAM - 16GB DDR3 @ 1600mhz SSD - OCZ Vertex 120GB HDD - 500GB Bandwidth: ~ 950Mbps Up and Down Server OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit Now I believe this server rig is good for running a Dserver. Also, I'm going to put the 4950 on "turbo" so the first core will OC to 3.7Ghz. From what I understand the Dserver doesn't multi-thread so it works out. Plus it's a locked chip and I can't OC it. However I can OC the 2500k. So, this server should be able to handle a load of maximum 84 players about as well as wings, right? Question #3: What OS should I run on the server? Right now I have a copy of Windows 7 Pro I was going to use, and still may. However I have found that home versions of Windows, due to EULA BS, are limited in the amount of TCP/IP connections they can have concurrently. Right now, with the server OS I have, I fear that a bottleneck will happen because of the max 20 concurrent TCP/IP connections limit. So, the only way around this limit is to use an actual server OS like windows server 2012 or something, which I CANNOT afford. So I am currently looking into a Linux or other freeware based option. First off, is this limit something that will affect my server's ability to host multiple players or not? Secondly, can IL2 Sturmovik Dserver run on Linux Server software? And lastly, is the only reason to use Linux just to reduce the resource overhead on the server? Question #4: Do players connect to a server via TCP/IP connections? Can I change this to UDP (not sure if UDP has a limit)? Is it not painfully obvious that I have no earthly clue what I am doing by now? Question #5: Do I need to port forward for the server? Currently I don't port forward for my game when I fly and it works fine. However, being pretty new to this whole thing, I am afraid that I do in fact need to forward some ports to the server to keep game play smooth. It's not a big deal if I need to, I would just like to know if I need to for this game. Question #6: Is there anyone out there that can give me a hand (w/ Linux)? I have never worked with Linux (much less server software) and I am a little daunted by the possibility of having to use it. I have seen that you need a windows emulator (wine?) to run the installer on the Linux system, and also some other API library or something. All of that is way above my knowledge level right now. Even if it's just there to answer questions I can't find answers to on my own. I appreciate the help in answering any of my questions. I have been looking for answers to these for a few days now but I haven't been able to find any answers that really answer my questions. However, if you want to setup a minecraft server, the internet is waiting for you and it seems pretty damn easy. Hope this game is that easy. On the plus side though, according to my resources, I could host 180 people on a minecraft server without lag. I don't play minecraft so I don't know how intense it is on the CPU, SSD, and RAM... but if it compares to the draw that IL2 demands then I feel confident this should work great. Thanks again! -- p3zman
JimTM Posted May 23, 2017 Posted May 23, 2017 (edited) As many of you know, I am in the process of trying to setup a dedicated NA server. I have, I believe, all the essentials of a good server but I still need quite a bit of help getting it off the ground. Question #1: How do I get another game key to run a separate Dserver? I have both emailed and sent a ticket into support but have not yet received a reply. Am I doing this wrong? See "Create a DServer Account" on pg. 167 of the editor manual. If you followed this procedure then check with support again. Do you not need to get a separate Dserver key anymore? You need a separate DServer account if you want to run your IL-2 and a DServer at the same time. Is it as easy as re-downloading my copy of IL2 onto my server PC and then just running a Dserver from that PC while I fly on mine? Probably wishful thinking but it would be nice. No. You need different game keys to run IL-2 (purchased key) and a Dserver (free key) at the same time. You can run the DServer that comes with IL-2 (under \bin\game) as long as you do not run IL-2 also. ... Question #4: Do players connect to a server via TCP/IP connections? Can I change this to UDP (not sure if UDP has a limit)? Is it not painfully obvious that I have no earthly clue what I am doing by now? See the following under "Configuration Dialog" on pg. 326 of the editor manual: - Downloader Port - TCP Port - UDP Port Question #5: Do I need to port forward for the server? Currently I don't port forward for my game when I fly and it works fine. However, being pretty new to this whole thing, I am afraid that I do in fact need to forward some ports to the server to keep game play smooth. It's not a big deal if I need to, I would just like to know if I need to for this game. Yes, see the answer to the previous question. ... Here's a couple of posts to check if you have port forwarding issues: - https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/22178-dserver-idiots/?do=findComment&comment=432130 - https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/28956-dedicated-server-running-my-friends-cant-see-it/ Edited May 23, 2017 by JimTM 1
ACG_pezman Posted May 23, 2017 Author Posted May 23, 2017 Jim I feel awful man! I even referenced the manual for other questions and didn't even think to check for those. Thanks for those answers man!
ACG_pezman Posted May 23, 2017 Author Posted May 23, 2017 No worries p3zman. Good luck! Thanks Jim, I just need to make sure that nothing bottlenecks the server and it should be good. God help me if I need to use Linux Server... I don't even know where I'd begin :/
JG13_opcode Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Send me a pm if you need help with Linux. I will gladly try to help you out.
