So, an attack from 6 o'clock, pressed home by an FW-190 was by far the most effective way to take down a B-17/B-24.

 

Frontal and beam attacks safer for the fighter pilots but much less effective.

Interesting stuff Milo.  The real surprise was the range these guys were opening fire at; sometimes over 1km away.
