CanadaOne Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Hello. Does an SSD that has IL2 on it have to have the Win OS on it to get any advantage, or would an SSD with only IL2 on it still be better even if the Win OS was on a standard HD? Obviously the world would be a better place with the OS on the SSD, but I'm just curious as to the question above. Thank you.
SakerVVS Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 I'm not sure of the technical answer, but I have IL2 on a separate SSD from my os, along with other games and have been doing so for years. Both ways seem the same both very fast. 1

If you get a Samsung Evo series SSD, it includes software for cloning. It's basically a one click process. Very easy. And you'll love having your OS on an SSD. You'll never go back! 1

But my OS is on a 1TB HD (2/3 full) and the SSD will only be 120 or 250GB. Just big enough for two flightsims and some breathing room. Does the cloning software allow you to choose only the OS or do you have to clone the whole HD? Edited May 16, 2017 by CanadaOne

What most people do when installing an OS to SSD, is to setup their profile location on a HDD where there's more space available. That way, all your profile stuff is on the HDD and not taking precious SSD space. A quick google search will tell you how to setup your profile to a different drive than the OS. Any other big installs, you could always install on the HDD as well, as long as you create the default programs folders to avoid any issues. With a 120GB SSD, you should be able to fit your OS, any normal sized installs, and IL-2. Then you could save for a dedicated game SSD in the future if you wanted. Edited May 17, 2017 by Warpig 1

I admit I don't exactly know what you mean by my "profile", but I will look into it. I appreciate the help.

CanadaOne Posted May 17, 2017 Author Posted May 17, 2017 Just ordered the Samsung Evo 250GB SSD. Was going to get a smaller cheaper one from a different company, but this is part of my incremental summer rebuild of my PC, and I might as well get good parts. And I like the Samsung cloning software you mentioned. I watched a video review and it looks easy enough for me to do. And ya gotta love that Amazon one-day shipping. No patience when it comes to toys in the mail. Should be installed for flying tomorrow night. 1

CanadaOne Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Bugger! Just got the SSD, but the instructions say you need a USB to SATA III cable to do the clone with the SSD external to the machine, and the cable wasn't included. Any idea if I could just unplug my D: drive, plug in the SSD and do the clone from C: like that, and then unplug my C: and use the SSD? My tech-nerd wisdom is limited.

And you'll love having your OS on an SSD. You'll never go back! And the data migration was a success. Had the SSD installed before as extra storage, but I just transferred the OS. And you were right, the cloning software with the Samsung Evo was super easy to use. I can't say for sure how much faster my rig is now, but there is no question that it is faster. It's definitely being held back by the prehistoric malevolence of my socket 775 dual core CPU and MB, but it is absolutely faster. BOS load times are clearly faster. Haven't flown yet, that will come later. When I get the new CPU and MB, I'm definitely going to put the OS on an M.2 drive. This speed freak stuff is fun.

Jade_Monkey Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 No need to clone or have the OS to take advantage of SSD speeds. just install the game in ssd and enjoy.
CanadaOne Posted May 22, 2017 Author Posted May 22, 2017 No need to clone or have the OS to take advantage of SSD speeds. just install the game in ssd and enjoy. Not sure if it's because of the antiquity of my rig, or my overactive imagination, but I did find the load times faster when both were on the SSD. No question though; once you go SSD, there is no going back.
Jade_Monkey Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 (edited) Ive gone the Full SSD route with no HDDs in my rig. I have a fast 500GB M.2 for OS and most programs and a 1TB SATA for all games. One of the biggest breakthroughs in PC components in a long time. Edited May 22, 2017 by Jade_Monkey 1
