NETSCAPE Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 How often was the Waffenbehälter 81 (machinegun pods) used on the Ju 87s? It appears they would be relatively easy to put on and take off, much like a bomb. Though I am no expert and do not know if some special modification had to take place to enable their use. Was it practical to take on and off or were some stuka's just assigned this roll specifically? The weapon practically has no use in multiplayer but in singleplayer I like to mess around with it. The sound of 14 mgs firing is just.....beautiful :D and it would be a blast to implement it in my campaign. But if it's highly unrealistic I won't, plenty of bombs...
csThor Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I haven't found a single hint whether it was even used operationally. A Stuka is not really an Il-2, loitering low and slow over a target area is just asking for trouble in an aircraft with a liquid-cooled engine and no discernable armor. Besides loading the wing ETCs with bombs would give a lot more "bang". I guess it was one of those options that was never truly used because it never fit the circumstances or made any sense from the military (and self-preservation) point of view.
Dutchvdm Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I think one can compare it to the MG pods of the Hs-129. Yes there where tested but never used operationally. Don't think they would be all that useful. It's the same with the Ju-88 with the WB81. Grt M
NETSCAPE Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 Ok thanks, that would explain my rather unfruitful searches online of it's use.
