Neo-ST Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Hi, New to the forums and to the game. Everyone praising it, so I decided to give it a try, especially since I already have the Rift CV1. However, I'm struggling to have constant 90fps. I have to literally put all graphics settings to lowest possible in order to achieve 90fps, and that's only with small planes and no enemies. But, jump into H111, and frames get halved to 45 and ASW kicking in. Enemies in the sky...frames dipping to 45 again. My system is a Win10 with i7-7700K@4.5, 16gb ram and Strix 1080 Ti OC. What is wrong here? Is the game badly optimized or am I doing something wrong? I read how other users with 1080 Ti are running with High settings and SS@1.5 without ASW kicking in, but I can forget about that. Tried it, set SS to 1.5 with Oculus Tray Tool and it barely holds 45fps with ASW constantly working and sometimes it dips below 45. I really don't want to play the game in lowest settings possible because, honestly, it doesn't look nice, even in VR... Nvidia drivers are the latest, etc...

Ican recommend you boost your CPU to max and stable , Il2 need only Mhz ... In russian forum , the best result is i7 7700k 5.2mhz always
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 There seems to be a problem very specifically with GTX 1080Ti and this game with VR(i have a few friends also on this card and just gtx1080 who getting frames from 50-90 all over the place.but have few others with GTX980Ti or GTX 1060 and they doing fine almost contact 90 fps on (High settings with 1.5x SSampling)Probably Nvidia Fault again.__________________________________________________________________________You do not need to overclock the CPU if the CPU load is not high (Over 98%) IT WILL NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE and it wont be specially on a 7700K Seriously. My Old and outdated AMD FX8350 @ 4.3Ghz running game (MAXED OUT @ 4K, With also terrain config that uses 5.5GB!! Vram My CPU is only loaded to 20-25% Over all 4 Primary cores and game not even using entire GPU (80-85%)
Nibbio Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 (edited) Try stalingrad map. Moscow map is problematic, especially on runways or close to airfields. Devs have found the problem with the moscow map airfields and are working to solve it. Also try vr pre-rendered frames=4 in Nvidia Control Panel. I have an old i7 3820 and a gtx 1060 and it runs pretty smooth on a rift cv1 (balanced or high graphics, SS 1.3, no ingame AA) Edited May 11, 2017 by Nibbio
coconut Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 @op: are you aware of the HUD issue? Have you tried with the HUD turned off?
A_radek Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I do think the Hud is the culprit here. Press H button once in game to hide it Neo-st. But can anyone confirm 1080ti is not working properly with this game? Was just about to go and get one.
dburne Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 But can anyone confirm 1080ti is not working properly with this game? Was just about to go and get one. There is a fairly long running thread over on the DCS forums regarding the 1080 Ti's and poor performance/stuttering in VR as well. To the OP, as previously mentioned definitely make sure the HUD is turned off. Can you confirm you are seeing this kind of performance with it off?
Neo-ST Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 (edited) It was HUD after all. It needs to be turned off, the difference is drastic. HUD ON = 45-90fps with -30% performance headroom. HUD OFF = 90fps with +20-30% performance headroom. The problem for a noob like me now, is that I have trouble finding enemy planes without it. However, I can now finally play in High settings with SS@1.5 at 90fps for over 95% of the time, and often with 20-30% of performance headroom left. Things do change when closer to the ground, or near cities, flames, explosions, etc. but even then, if it dips to 45fps, it doesn't stay there too long. He111 is a the most challenging of the bunch, performance-wise. It sucks out that 20-30% headroom and sometimes makes it dip to 45fps, but it's still mainly in the 90fps area. Since this is the first time I'm playing IL-2, I have to say that the flight model is brilliant, I didn't expect it to be so detailed and good. Tried flying He111 and enemy plane shot my wings, which I didn't notice until I felt the plane is flying weirdly and I have to fight the stick to maintain the straight line. I was shocked when I took a look to my right and saw my right wing look like Emental cheese. :D Then tried taking off a runway with a strong crosswing...brilliant struggle with rudder. Then tried starting the completely shut down plane, but I don't know that for now. Need to set mixture, air vents and what not. I guess it's time to research some tutorials. Thanks everyone. EDIT: Just found out that setting graphics from High to Ultra didn't seem to impact fps at all, or very little. Weird. So now I'm running Ultra with SS@1.5 and getting mostly 90fps with 15-20% headroom. Edited May 11, 2017 by Neo-ST

Can I ask you to point me in the right direction Dburne? Not familiar with the dcs forums and tried searching, but can't seem to find the correct thread among all 1080 threads there. Really only interested if I would be better of with a vanilla 1080 for il2/Vr.

Just go to their forums and to the Input/output sub- forum, and in there you will see the Virtual Reality sub-forum. It is a pretty active topic and near the top of the list...

Found it, thanks The problem for a noob like me now, is that I have trouble finding enemy planes without it. That's when you press the "i" button after hiding the Hud. This will give you you your aircraft-labels back without the framrate hit of the Hud
BP_Lizard Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I assigned the "I" function on one of the HOTAS' buttons so I could turn it on/off on the fly.
dburne Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 I assigned the "I" function on one of the HOTAS' buttons so I could turn it on/off on the fly. That is what I did as well, works a charm!
Highwayman Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 I can confirm that the 1080ti works great for me, rock solid performance in IL2 BOS, haven't tried Moscow yet, as I'm having so much fun flying around Stalingrad at the moment, and not all of my Virtual Wingmen have BOM yet. I too however experience stutter and general poor performance in DCS with my setup. The 2.0 Alpha is much better, but still nowhere near the performance of IL2, this is by far THE best flying experience in VR I have had.

I hesitated regarding the 1080ti, and the window of opportunity to buy, install and get rid of all evidence closed. Hopefully, wifey and kids are gone again later this week.
