Sky_Wolf Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Anyone here know how to adjust settings to improve cockpit shadows? The shadows in my cockpit when the sun is behind me are heavily pixelated. I have graphical settings on Ultra and anti-aliasing of 4 (highest).
OrLoK Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Any chance of a screenshot, so we can see what you are seeing?
Danziger Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 It's a performance thing. Shadows are big performance killers so they are lower resolution.
Sky_Wolf Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 Here's a picture of the pixelated shadows. EDIT: Actually, nevermind, IL2 Stalingrad forums do not allow users to simply copy and paste images into replies. You'll have to trust me - shadow edges in the cockpit are a series of squares.
Jason_Williams Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 No you can upload images into a post very easily. Take a closer look. Also, there is nothing wrong with the shadows. They are that way for optimization purposes. I hope to improve them in the future, but it affects a lot of other shadows and can hurt performance so it's not so easy. Jason 3
Sky_Wolf Posted May 10, 2017 Author Posted May 10, 2017 Understood. Thank you for the reply. Overall, an excellent game. The only anomalies I've noticed so far are the smoke effects popping up from Stalingrad and the cockpit shadows.
ShamrockOneFive Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Understood. Thank you for the reply. Overall, an excellent game. The only anomalies I've noticed so far are the smoke effects popping up from Stalingrad and the cockpit shadows. Just how it is right now with both of those effects. You know the first time I saw the shadows play across the cockpit I was mesmerized. Only later did I notice the pixelation.
Sky_Wolf Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 After reviewing images of BoS cockpit shadows online, my pixelated shadows are unique. Clearly there is a problem with my anti-aliasing settings. I have my Nvidia anti-aliasing set to controlled by the application. Maybe I should change it manually to 16x? Can anybody provide advice? Update: I have attempted to find a way to upload the image again, and have failed again. Not willing to spend anymore time with this... might have something to do with my browser settings if it's so easy. Just believe me: the cockpit shadows are pixelated as hell (edges of shadows are a series of squares).
OrLoK Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 upload to imgur or similar, (I know its a pain) but it'll really assist us!.
coconut Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Some people have enabled sparse grid super sampling in nvidia inspector to fix terrain shimmering issues in the past. I noticed this had the side effect of softening shadow edges. Check your antialiasing overrides in nvidia control panel and try playing with them

Check your antialiasing overrides in nvidia control panel and try playing with them Today's 2.010 update has gone a long way in reducing the shimmering...
Sky_Wolf Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 Ok, I've uploaded the image to imgur. http://imgur.com/a/XfFYS See what I mean? Some brutal pixelation going on in the cockpit. All other shadows in the game are fine so far, just the cockpit shadows. And searching "IL2 BoS cockpit" on google leads to images of cockpit shadows that are smooth, indicating that something is going on with my settings. So far the only advice I've gotten is to screw around with the Nvidia anti-aliasing settings. I will try this. Any other advice?

It may not be what you like, but it's what everyone else sees. And again, you can attach images to a post. Simply click on Full Editor button. Jason

Any other advice? perhaps sounding less dismissive about the advice given by people trying to help you may further your causes significantly in future
Sky_Wolf Posted May 11, 2017 Author Posted May 11, 2017 I can assure you that I'm not being dismissive. In fact, I wrote "I will try this", as you rightfully quoted. But to be honest, I won't try that. I'm just going to trust Jason on this one. He is a founder after all, and he is saying that the cockpit shadow pixelation (as evidenced by the image I posted on imgur) is normal.

He definitely knows whats going on. Unfortunately sometimes the pixelated shadows show up a little more than other times. Most of the time its not too big of a deal.
kileab Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Shadows are really bad in IL-2s, they are fine in the other planes. The Pericles's picture shows very well where the problem is. Perhaps it's normal but it's ugly.
Sky_Wolf Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 I have tried out another plane briefly (Bf-110). And sure enough, the cockpit shadows are pixelated hard. -IRRE-Biluf, are you sure that the cockpit shadows are only really bad in the IL-2s? If you're right, then there is something funky going on between the game and my GTX 1080 graphics card.
