Been playing this game for roughly a month and recommending it to everyone I know but there seem to be some optimization issues.

I have been playing around with the settings and very few things cause performance hits, however the HUD is devastating.

1080ti goes from 2025mhz to 1569mhz when the HUD is activate? My fps goes from 90 to 45-50. I have ASW off and am playing at SS@1.3

It sucks cause the HUD is nice to have up, not only for info from the ship but more importantly chatting with other players. Don;t understand why the my gpu would downclock itself when the HUD is activated.

Thanks for the VR though, its my favorite sit down experience by far.

Heavy performance impact of the HUD in VR is a known issue, see the release notes by Han for 2.009. There's no way around that but to turn it off. You can still turn it on now and then to check the chat when you hear the chat beep.

Yeah i know, but the fact is its not taking advantage of my hardware. My GPU is dropping speed when the HUD is on? Shouldn't I drop frames and my machine should still be giving it, its all.

Your GPU dropping its frequency is probably because it's not receiving enough frame from the CPU. I think you can disable that behaviour in Nvidia control panel by forcing the maximum performance profile, but it won't help the CPU send more frames to the GPU, it will only make your GPU consume more power.

the performance impact of the hud is NOT just in VR its game wide and a big impact.

on a GTX 1060 its a different of 45 Frames/second and yes gpu downclocking.

getting annoyed by games that cannot pull 60fps but only use 45% GPU and 15% CPU..
No no i want it to use 100% Gpu and 40-50% CPU
Then even 1060 will pull 120fps on ultra @ 2K

Before the VR update it was other way around.
60 fps in normal view then goto map it would jump from 90-130fps (sooo smooth and awesome to play)
After update map lost 110 FPS

Salutations,

Just and observation. I was testing a SP mission yesterday.. offline. It was a vehicle convoy interdiction. I was observing, using auto pilot to see how the AI would perform the mission.

I turned off the HUD early during the mission. Normally, the player craft would come into the convoy detection range, the craft would spot the convoy and attack it. But with the HUD off the convoy did not display and the attack did not occur. I suppose this situation should be obvious but this indicates that the engine is NOT displaying game objects with the HUD off. Therefore with the HUD on, mission objects are actively being displayed... ergo more graphic load and less performance.

Finally, I was running a FPS of between 90-95 with the HUD on and when the HUD was turned off my FPS jumps to around 150. Of course this is offline in a rather empty practice mission.

From the Version 2.009 Release Notes:

<<<3. Hiding the in-game HUD (H key) now stops most GUI routines, which can double your FPS in some situations. You can use this to get a performance boost while playing on a slower PC. After hiding the HUD, you can still turn object markers on by pressing I key (they won't lower performance since they were recreated for VR in a separate module that doesn't use ScaleForm like the rest of the GUI);>>>

So this change was done in 2.009,  and not VR specific - they found a way to stop most of the GUI Routines when the HUD was hidden, thereby giving a larger performance boost with it hidden than one previously got from hiding the HUD prior to 2.009.

Based upon this, I take it that is the reason for the larger difference in performance between HUD hidden and HUD displayed, whereas previously there was not a big difference as the performance with it hidden was not that much greater than if it was displayed.

So if one takes that as the meaning, it is not that performance dropped so much per se, it is that it gained more with the HUD hidden than it used to.

I myself can not say how it compares as I was not flying the sim really until VR was released,  so this is just my observation from the release notes for 2.009.

NO WAY!!

Before the VR patch average game frame were much high and frame with gui on and on map were double what they are now.

The rest of us took a big performance and gameplay hit just so a few people can enjoy VR.

I have an extra vive set. Thinking about giving it away.

Maybe you are on to something. Since the gui is 2D the driver might downclock the card thinking it's not doing 3D work, hence the large drop.

I dont think its a CPU bottleneck issue.

you can fix that..

In NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL Just set power management to maximum performance for IL2.exe then it will always run GPU at max possible Mhz even if you play on low @ 480p it will max out gpu and mem clocks
