HeavyCavalrySgt Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I have noticed that if you get behind a LaGG, frequently he will oscillate violently in pitch. Is that intentional, or they just as hamfisted as I am? Other times, the German or Russian AI will just give up it seems like and follow a gentle curve around. "Tried a split S, check. Tried going head-to head, check. Maneuvered in the horizontal plane, check. Tried to get an altitude advantage, check. Tried a yo-yo, check. Let's see - 'check to see if opponent is out of ammo'. No, no he is not." AI pilots seem anxious to get out of the aircraft if it is on fire or if the engine quits. Is there anything else? I watched a LaGG driver ride his plane into the ground. It was in a spin and it had no rudder. I could not have faulted the guy for getting out. On the other hand, I have seen AI jump just because they had a dead engine. I hope in campaign games after release, pilots will try to make forced landings in friendly territory if possible and more importantly I hope it matters that you have an airplane that can be cannibalized or fixed depending on damage.

Is that intentional, or they just as hamfisted as I am? I've seen this behavior many times in ROF as well. Obviously related to me! As for very fast AI little inputs in ailerons/elevator when flying...that you can see when following AI. But all in all, i like the way this first BOS AI is responding in fights. It seems they can boom and zoom, can also evade by reducing speed very much and make scissors...
Finkeren Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 One major weakness in AI, that I have found is, that it seems to be very bad at handling overshoots. Most of my 109 kills I have achieved in the LaGG so far, have occured when I force a overshoot. This appears to confuse the AI which just maintains a slight climb presenting a perfect target.
=38=Tatarenko Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Yep. Even when I'm almost dead I've had kills where he just sails past me and I pull the trigger.
wastel Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Jumping "just" because of an dead engine is not an uncommon behavior. In all combar/veteran reports i read, they allways tried to jump instead of an belly landing. Most combat damage belly landings happeneded because of damage on very low alt without the height to bail out. Only situations where a pilot stayed in plane was when he had a small chance to glide over friendly area and then bail out to safety. So bailing out was allways better than belly landing somewhere in the landscape. My experience from lots of veteran books and from hours of talking to them (german side) wastel 1

If the pilot has a choice between bailing out over enemy territory or gliding back towards friendly territory I can't think of a good reason to jump out of a controllable aircraft with excess altitude. You preserve the option of bailing if required and less the excitement of trying to evade and escape from angry Russian partisans. Pilots will bail even if they can glide back to the airfield they took off from.
