machtu Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 My Asus Z97a/usb3.1 has begun giving me grief after 2 years of use. Any suggestions for dependable replacement board in either 1150 or 1151 socket? My current config is i7 4790k @ 4gh Samsung 850 evo 500gb Nvidea 980 Dark rock 3 pipe cooler Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
CIA_Matabo Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 I have an idea, update the bios on the mother board
Jaws2002 Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I had some hardware issues few weeks ago and thinking i have a motherboard problem i started looking for new motherboard. My Cpu and mobo are older than yours, so the only thing that made sense was replacing the whole CPU/mobo/ram combo. My problem turned out to be the power supply, so i just replaced the Corsair AX 860 with a 1200w Coolermaster and it's all fixed now. When looking at motherboards i really liked this new Z270 boards with the NVMe M2 interface for fast PCIe SSD's. With my next upgrade I'm planing to replace the two spinning hard drives thay i have, next to my 2 SATA SSD's, with one or two NVMe M2 SSD's. This things are small, sleek and blazing fast. If you want to replace just the motherboard, look what chipset compatible with your hardware is the most future proof and then look for a motherboard. If you plan to upgrade the CPU as well, with another Intel based setup, I'd look at the I-7 7700k and z270 combo.
machtu Posted May 16, 2017 Author Posted May 16, 2017 I finally decided to stick with the 4th gen i-7 1150 socket chip that I already have to save money. After looking at options, I went with a ASRock fatility Killer MB. It has been flawless in its operation so far. The Asus board would crash fairly often when running BoS, so this is a real treat. Ran the system thru steam VR performance test and it rated very high. I guess a Vive is in my near future! Can't wait.
machtu Posted May 16, 2017 Author Posted May 16, 2017 Excuse me, the new motherboard is a AS Rock Z97 fatality killer.
SakerVVS Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Not sure what the warranty was like on the Asus but it may be worth it to RMA and sell it to recoup some of your costs.
machtu Posted May 17, 2017 Author Posted May 17, 2017 It was over 2 years old so I think the warranty was no longer applicable, and besides, the new board was only $120. Amazing amount of technology for that amount of money! I was thinking of just getting the same MB until I read the reviews on it in newegg. Not very good with a high percentage of problems with it. The ASRock board had very low negative ratings and it seems to be working much better than the ASUS board ever did. I think my system is stable enough now so I went ahead and order up a Vive. Should have it on Friday. Been waiting for about 2 years now for VR. I think the next step in VR would be like where they plug directly into your brain like in The Matrix movie. A couple of years from now you think?
kestrel79 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Going to have to check out these NVMe M2 boards, my Asus is still going strong from 2011 I'm due for an upgrade...waiting on the new AMD graphics cards.
Gambit21 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 It will be interesting to see what AMD brings to the table in the GPU department next round. It's looking like they'll be soundly trounced by Nvida once again if rumors of the next Nvidia cards are true. We shall see.
CanadaOne Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I'm still undecided as to an Intel or AMD CPU, but the MB is definitely my weak point. I just don't know enough about them other than the endless "They all come broken" comments at newegg. I'm leaning towards an Intel CPU because I can stick a nice cheap (and better-than-what-I-have) G4560 in it and then pop in a nice i5 later on. That allows me to get a better quality MB and RAM soon and enjoy the upgrade, well, sooner. And the G4560 will definitely not go to waste afterwards. Now if I can just figure out which MB. I want good MB, but I won't overclock.
Gambit21 Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 Tough one Canada - I like your i5 later plan. Make no mistake about those Ryzen chips though - they are legit a solid upgrade path with that Am4 socket. I tend to get enthusiast level Mobo's (Asus Rog Crosshair this time around) but it's not necessary. Overclocking on the Asus boards is a snap - keep that in mind for either the Ryzen or i5. 1

I'd love to get a Ryzen 1500X, that would be sweet. But it's $300 (tax in) here. Another $200 for a good MB and $100 for a nice 8GB stick of RAM I could double up on later. And of course there is still the case and PSU. That's not easy cash for me. If I go with the G4560, I can knock $200 off the price of that setup and up to an i5 a month or two later. All depends how busy we are at work. If we're really busy, maybe I can get the 1500X right away. Just ordered a 250GB Samsung SSD today, it's Part #1 of my upgrade. I can plug that into my POS PC right away and have a bit of fun with it. And it will be great with the future build. That said, I would probably go with an Asus MB no matter what CPU. I've only had Asus boards in the past. I'm on a P5N-E SLI right now. I think it was manufactured in 1963.

My Asus X99 3.1 with a Z390 and i7 3700 something still runs rock solid, use it for audio and office work. I built a new PC for gaming from a then reasonable priced i7 9700 upgrade kit. Had a 2080ti and a CPU watercooler. Your chosen GPU defines the powersupply, go for at least 1000 watts, but an AMD GPU might be a little more energy efficient. A modern gaming PC might be a good choice if it's well built. Dell builds good laptops too, bought a refurbished precision 8 years ago, never regretted it (my wife uses it LoL). Only gaming and a laptop might not be the best solution, though many use one for it.
