Vive reprojection better than Rift ASW for this sim?

Hi All.

This is my first post on this forum.  Short introduction: 53-year old American currently living in Indonesia. I discovered and fell in love with il2 1946 many years ago. I was mesmerized by how I could almost come to life inside that virtual world and become one of those WWii pilots. I have been closely monitoring the development of Virtual Reality and now that Battle of Stalingrad has VR I can now really live inside that world. I have not yet purchased the vr-ready-RIG or VR headset, but will do shortly, when I get back to the states.

Please help me decide on a rift or vive. I am getting VR mainly for this sim.   I am aware of all of the general pro's and cons of the Rift and Vive from their reviews on other forums. But I want to know specifically how they compare in this sim. In particular, their implementation of reprojection and/or asynchronous space/time warp.

On another thread, user KG4_Blackwolf said this:

"I will add Vive doesn't have the ASW in the way the Rift does so I don't see this blurry thing Rift pilots talk about."

1.  Can any of you Vive owners or people with access to both headsets confirm this? Does the vive asynchronous reprojection look better and is it less obvious  than the Rift's   ASW?  Can you describe the difference? This could be the tipping point in the headset I choose.

And :

2. Are there other performance issues or driver implementation differences between the Rift and Vive that I should know about that may help me decide?

Thanks in advance for any input you can give me, and I'm looking forward to meeting you all, friend or foe,  in that virtual world high above Stalingrad.

Thomas

Welcome to the forums!

1. I have the rift so I can give some inputs on what happens when ASW kicks in. Surprisingly the sim is still smoother with ASW than it was on 2d constand 60 FPS. When just flying to target and not in combat I only notice anomalies when looking through the prop when ASW kicks in. Most obvious is the reticle is 'unstable' (don't have a better word). When in combat trying to ID planes it becomes an issue when they are close and flying other directions than you - meaning they are flying fast accross the screen. They are like double vision when you're drunk or something like that. But not that distracting. It would be better without of course. Once you ID'd the opponent and following them it's not an issue because you keep them in your view so basically they don't move fast on the screen.

2. Currently Vive is easier to set up probably because for rift you need the steamvr app installed but this is just a minor thing. Probably there are no other differences.

It's hard to get comparisons as people usually have one or the other.

I have the Rift, and personally do not feel ASW is that bad at all - it seems to work very well when it does kick in for me.

It can also be disabled, but that would be at the risk of experiencing some stuttering when frame rates drop much below 90 fps.

Rift you get headphones, actually very good ones, included which is one less thing to fumble around for, one less cable, one less expense. Rift also comes without hand controllers in the box so for pure sim playing is a cheaper option, you're not paying for something you might not use. Otherwise it's very much a case of apples and oranges, both are very similar it what they can do.

I tried disabling it but the experience when close planes flying fast accross your screen is almost the same but it's because the stuttering this way so all in all it's worse. Because it stutters.

Black_Sab, if you haven't already try enabling dynamic resolution. I found than in my case it helped stay at 90FPS. On the down side, it makes the view more blurry, especially noticeable on cockpit instruments. I personally prefer to fly with it disabled and with ASW, but I'm more of a ground attacker than a dogfighter.

I tried that as well and prefer ASW too. I didn't like the blurry instruments either. Maybe I came off that way but I don't find ASW that annoying.

I have both the Rift and the Vive. I'm currently using the Vive. I like the build quality and I already have some good quality headphones that I like using. On the other hand the Rift is lighter in weight and would probably be more comfortable if worn for long periods of time.

BoS/BoM looks great in both. You won't be disappointed with either.

If you are going to be using only for flight sims then I would recommend the Rift, purely, down to the cost. Like Hagar said, you would be paying extra for the, included, hand controllers that come with the Vive.

I have the rift. The holographic sight warping doesn't really bother me since I am mainly watching the path of the tracers or my target. When this is happening you can still tell the center of the reticle. The bigger issue is like when others have mentioned that a plane is flying past quickly. They appear to have a ghost image or double vision as some have put it. This absolutely ruins the chance to identify the aircraft by it's shape as it is too blurred when ASW is active. That said the rift is an amazing experience. I have not tried the Vive. I chose the rift due to the lower cost and not needing touch.
