4K Fw 190 A-5 Template Project

Hello there fellow pilots,

I have started work on my 4K Fw 190 A-5 Template.

Just like the one for the F-2 and F-4, my aim is to create a template which is more accurate than the existing templates.

To do this I will be completely remaking the template from the ground up. Starting with rivets and panel lines.

Since it would be far too time-consuming to start with a blank, I asked ICDP if I could use his template as a rough guide to built mine on. I will probably end up using none of his layers in my final template though. But If I do, I will mention it!

This will be a lengthy process which will result in a plane in the same style of the F-2 and F-4 template but with its own unique features.

Your help would be highly appreciated. I use images, manuals and work drawings to do this. However, I could really use more info on the plane to make it as accurate as possible. Most useful are work, assembly, and production drawings! Or if you have anything else that might be of even the slightest use: It would be amazing if you could PM me.

(I currently don't have much info on the decals/stencils for this plane. It would be amazing if someone has some documents on this!)

As a small extra to give you guys a bit more insight into the process, I have decided to keep a log. Showing you guys how much time I put into the project.

You can find the log here. I will try to keep this log up to date as much as possible although it can happen that I might forget it sometimes.

Of course, I will also make normal maps and alpha channels for the template.

I do not yet know whether I will convert it for the A-3 or not. Time will tell.

Here a small preview of what I have done so far.

With different skins produced on different templates it would be nice if the eminent artists would consider also producing their schemes without the advanced layers along with the full skin.

Any scheme could then sit in the paint layer of any template for those so disposed. Without this its choosing between schemes produced on different templates given we are stuck with one normal map per model. Ultimately that restricts choice and could also lead to confusion.

All that said, I applaud the work and fully understand the old adage "you pays you money".

You made a good point here, I think it is the point to have for different Templates different Bum Map/Normal Maps, which will really bring confusion.

I'm guilty in that too, because I reworked the Original Templates with my own layers, rivets, own hinges and more stuff which was not part of a "official" File and the Bump Map. If you use the original or, ICDP's Bump map on my skins you see graphical glitches because they do not fit!

You're right, a solution for this could only be a Template/skin related Normal Map which replace automatically during loading the in the Textures files stored Normal Map. In my opinion it is at the moment not foreseen by the developers to have such kind of possibility :(

Another way would be the looking of the "official" Normal Map by the developer's, which will lead into restrictions for the skinning artists like myself and the others who implement their "idea of look" in their work.

I totally understand what you guys are saying.

For me, it is very simple: I made the choice to make the most historically accurate skins and templates as possible. Down to the tiniest detail. This means that some sacrifices need to be made. Even if that means that not all skins work together anymore.

I still hope for the day that the Normal Maps become skin specific instead of general. But until that happens, I will keep including my normal map with the skin.  It is still your choice whether you keep it or not.

Yes your in my opinion absolutely right, deversity, different styles and the freedom to choose and maybe in the future we will have that included Bump Map :)

IL2 FB 1946 was divided due to incompatible modding but not the skinning (IMHO) ;)

All accepted. I was just asking for the base schemes to be put out to get around the normal map issue. I do fully understand however that it is the creator's perogative not to, especially in the case of people like BHH who have put so much effort into their templates for the purposes of accuracy.

Hello there fellow pilots,

It has been a while but I finally have some more time to work on this Fw-190 A-5 project. University, other projects, and other real-life stuff required to much time.

I do not have a huge amount of time to work on the template so it will take a while to finish it. Of course, I will make sure the quality of the template does not suffer from this lack of time!

In the meantime, I have found and received some more information on the Fw which I can now use to make the template even more accurate than before!

I will add updates to this thread as major developments are made like I usually do.
