EAFFlashheart602 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 (edited) Hello all, Been enjoying VR in other flightsims (DCS, AeroFly, FSX and War Thunder) so stoked that it is now supported by Il-2BoS. My system is under the Oculus specs for CPU (i7 2600K, 12Gb RAM & GTX1070) but seems to cope quite happily with DCS and FSX. I'm obviously avoiding huge dogfights and cranking the AI traffic up in FSX - but so far, so good in other sims. With Il-2BoS though it refuses to play nice. I've had grey flashing, stuttering and mini 'jumping'. Finally with the SteamVR config code I've got rid of the blue chapareone and reduced the grey flashing to the main menus, but now I'm finding that it will CTD after about 5-10mins of flight. Even touching the HMD very slightly to see a key through the nose gap seems to produce a CTD and an error message on Oculus saying 'HDMI not plugged in'. (DCS seems much more stable and I can move around much more and lean around to look behind with no problems) TRied ordering an internal USB 3.0 card (but bafflingly after almost frying my PC there does not seem any way to get power to it from my Corsair 1100W) with the power cables available. Ordered a external powered USB 3.0 hub after reading someone recommend that - no joy. Updated my Nvida drivers and GeForce Experience - no joy, I've also gone into Control Panel and disabled all the power saving options on USB ports). I'm leaning to think its something to do with SteamVR being hypersensitive over tracking/USB ports - as it doesn't seem to happen in DCS or other sims. My CPU is an obvious bottleneck, of course, but it seems to cope fine with a high-fidelity DCS module like the UH-1H which should be pushing the CPU equally under VR compared to a free flight in Il-2 BoS. Very very frustrating - as its bloody fantastic flying for the 5-10mins of free flight or a quick 4 vs 4. And very odd given other reports that Il-2 BoS is a much better and smoother implementation of VR than DCS. Any tech gurus/VR experts have any ideas? Edited April 25, 2017 by EAFFlashheart602
Nibbio Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 I got an underspec system as well. Inatek pci usb card installed yesterday. It didnt need a power cable though. The only times I had CTDs was when attempting to overclock my GTX 1060. Also overclocking the CPU produced CTDs before installing an aftermarket liquid cooling system. I suspect your CTDs may also be heat related, did you check GPU and CPU temperatures? Also I would check the hdmi connection on the HMD, it may be loose, since you get disconnect warnings when you move/touch the visor Also I would check that the hdmi connection to the HDM has not come loose, and is firmly plugged, since you get disconnect warnings when touching/adjusting the visor Also I would get rid of geforce experience
dburne Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Sounds to me like maybe a power issue, not getting enough to the Rift to maintain a solid display, resulting in the stuttering and flashing of the display. Perhaps the extra layer of the Steam VR on top of Oculus runtime is just enough to keep it from maintaining solid connection for the display. What PCIe USB 3.0 card did you try? Why could you not connect power to it? I am running an Innatek PCIe USB 3.0 card, and had not trouble connecting power to it. What USB ports are you currently running the Rift through? One thing about the Rift, it is very sensitive to the USB ports one uses for it, especially the USB 3.0 ports. I run mine through the Innatek PCIe 3.0 powered card, both sensors and hmd usb plugged into it and it is solid as can be.
EAFFlashheart602 Posted April 25, 2017 Author Posted April 25, 2017 Thanks for tips folks. Fairly sure that its not heat GPU/CPU related - the 1070 is supposed to draw less power and run cooler than a 970. Checked HDMI at both ends. Tried running the HDMI through an display port adapter - no joy. Might see if getting rid of GeForce Experience does anything. (another tip I've seen somewhere is plug the HMD into a USB 2.0). I've got a Inateck 4 slot USB 3.0 card. Installed it fine, but how to connect it to my Corsair 1100 PSU has got me baffled - and I'm otherwise fairly OK with CUP/graphics card upgrades. Bit difficult to explain without pics - but the PSU has male/female 8-pin PCI-e connectors I could plug into https://www.kenable.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=6486&gclid=COCmmoDIv9MCFYgp0wodAHkB-g while the innateck card itself has a 15-pin SATA connector strip coming off it (and what I would call a male). However all the leads available from a PCI-e to a SATA seem to end in a 'male' connector too. On some online shop descriptions too the male/female sockets seem to be logically (to my brain) reversed. I finally tried the Inateck cards included 15-pin SATA pig tail to connect it to a 6-pin PCI-e at the PSU end - but that just produced an ominous buzz and the PC refused to boot-up. Removed power cable at it was fine again. I've not dared muck around with it more for fear of doing permanent damage. Does the Inateck card take enough power off the motherboard? Again - tried installing drivers (fine) and it says it is functioning, but plug the Rift in to the card and nothing.
Nibbio Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 The inatek card I bought doesn't need a power cable. If you are interested I can give you the reference Only the 2 sensors are connected though. Hmd has his own usb 3 port

I don't remember exactly what I used, seems like I had an adapter I needed to power the Innatek card in one of my GPU boxes that worked out great for me.
EAFFlashheart602 Posted April 25, 2017 Author Posted April 25, 2017 This is the Innateck card https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Superspeed-Ports-PCI-E-Expansion/dp/B00B6ZCNGM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1493130442&sr=8-3&keywords=inateck+pci-e+to+usb With it you get two pigtail power connectors - SATA (female) to molex 4pin and SATA female to male. (but no PCI-e socket/cable which is what is coming off the PSU) I was hoping to find a single power lead to connect PSU-card so I'm not going through 3 different cables to make it work, but have drawn a blank at how you connect it...

I would search either Corsair or maybe even Amazon, for Corsair Power cables and find the one that you would need... I can't remember which one , but I had found one prior to getting my Rift after receiving my Innatek card and realizing the included cable would not be long enough , but then looked around in some of my boxes and found an adapter that worked great for me. It really sounds like a power draw issue to me and you really need to try and rule that out. As mentioned my Innatek card has been working great for me. I have logged close to 16 hours so far in BoS without a glitch, and many more than that in DCS since getting my Rift in Jan.
Nibbio Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 if you are interested in this option, this is the one i bought got https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HJ1DULE?psc=1 without a power cable, and it's working well you may have seen it already, but here's a video of someone connecting a card similar to yours
