Naz Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Hi all Just wanted to pop in and thank the Devs for the recent VR support. Its fantastic and has re-ignited my interest in WW2 flight sims. I am an old boy in terms of IL2 having played the original since way back when the initial demo was released. I migrated to Cliffs of Dover and spent a lot of time on ATAG over several years. I was also an early(ish) adopter of VR having bought a DK2 and then a CV1 as soon as they were available. I pre-bought BoS when it was initially announced with VR support intended, and was disappointed when it was later dropped (perfectly good reasons at the time so I accepted the fact). Truth be told, VR ruined my simming as once I was able to sit in a cockpit there was no way for me to go back to a flat screen, the immersion is just too good. For the past couple of years my virtual "cockpit" has been of the motor car variety and have not loaded up any flight sims with my VR gaming limited to driving sims (Assetto Corsa and Project Cars both eventually providing great VR support) whilst also dabbling in Elite Dangerous. After stumbling across the news that BoS had added VR support I recently downloaded the game again to give it a go ... simply blew me away, the implementation is great. I'm working through the basic single missions learning how to fly and flight all over again and am loving it. As with all complicated VR titles, there remains issues with performance, resolution, clarity and the like, but after the obligatory rounds of system and settings tinkering (par for the course with VR gaming), it is running at a completely playable level. Well done gents, it marvellous to be back in a virtual cockpit again, and this time it really is "virtual" .. amazing. I have requested a ticket so I can transfer the game over to Steam (purely for the download speeds - it took a couple of hours to download here in Australia via the official site) .. once that is done, I will be buying the complete BoM and more as they come. Thanks again, top shelf work. Cheers Naz 8
Haza Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 (edited) Naz, A couple of hours to down-load? No NBN? Nice to see you over here on BOS. I'm really tempted now to invest in VR with all of the positive remarks players are saying as I don't even have TrackIR (Hat switch and mouse) Regards Haza Edited April 24, 2017 by Haza 1
216th_Jordan Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 If you cant get a steam key (I don't know the exact circumstances at which they do the swap - it costs them money), have you tried setting the launcher to 'prefer web distribution'? It usually helps in my case. 1
Naz Posted April 24, 2017 Author Posted April 24, 2017 Ahhhh ... that might well be the case, I'll check that out (it was definitely downloading via torrent and I was only getting 500kb/sec or so). Thanks for the heads up! Hey Haza, how are you mate, good to see you too. :-) ~S!~
doog442 Posted April 24, 2017 Posted April 24, 2017 Naz, A couple of hours to down-load? No NBN? Nice to see you over here on BOS. I'm really tempted now to invest in VR with all of the positive remarks players are saying as I don't even have TrackIR (Hat switch and mouse) Regards Haza I've literally just made my own Track IR this weekend for the stately sum of about £3.50.....with a bit of tinkering it works brilliantly and has added a new dimension to the game whilst I ponder VR. I appreciate there will be no comparison but it was a bit of fun and fills that gap before I pull the trigger on VR (or not). My main concern is resolution. 1
BMW801 Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 I just want to echo what most everyone else has said about VR. I just got a Rift last weekend and the difference is simply astounding. I am a previous track IR 5 user, and VR brings a whole new level of immersion to me. I am a better pilot and a better marksman because of the depth perception. I really feel like i am in the cockpit and it has entirely renewed my interest in flight sims. I am amazed every time I start it up, and now I am completely addicted again. The VR is so well done, that although I notice some of the issues of others' criticism, like the slightly lower resolution, etc, but it is far outweighed by the incredible sensation of being there. I fly these sims for fun and for an escape, and this VR implementation gives me a whole new feeling of truly escaping for a little while. I can not say enough good things about VR with BoX. I am so happy about all of it. I have always been a fan of WWII planes since I was a kid, and thisRift I received for my 51st birthday is like the culmination of a little lifetime dream - to fly WWII planes on a computer at home and really feel like you are there. Thank you again! 5
major_burns Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Now if they would only do it for Rise of Flight my sim experience would be complete... 3
OrLoK Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Now if they would only do it for Rise of Flight my sim experience would be complete... ditto! open cockpits are lovely in WT even if the rest of the game is inferior to BoX. Need Command cars for the tank portion too. Devs? make all the things!
scrapmetal Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 ditto! open cockpits are lovely in WT even if the rest of the game is inferior to BoX. Need Command cars for the tank portion too. Devs? make all the things! A number of times I've hit the canopy button on my joystick and ripped off the canopy from my 109. The immersion is amazing. I'm not sure what that does to flight dynamics, however.
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Apart from reduced cockpit temperatures and drastically improved visibility to the sides and rear (haha), much greater drag, you will be slower and obviously won't be as effective as you were with the canopy attached.
A_radek Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Better visibility and immersion factor is not worth the substantial increase in drag imho. I only open it briefly when my lenses get dry.
Herne Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Just want to give a +1 to the OP. Devs, A huge Thanks from me !
dburne Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Agreed! I have logged close to 20 hours in this sim since VR was implemented and I am amazed each time I load up a flight.

Very interesting. I shouldn't expect anything less from the coders! I need to move that cockpit button from being too easily accessible in the heat of battle.
WIS-Redcoat Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Now if they would only do it for Rise of Flight my sim experience would be complete... Yes please
schurem Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 oh man rof in vr that is as good as il2 would be the bomb. unlikely to happen tho. imo il2 is the best vr experience in my library. i rate it above elite dangerous even though that was built specifically for vr. perhaps 777 would do good to make a bit of a marketing push about it. you guys have hit gold here. 1
Magus Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 Agree with all the sentiments here, a great job implementing VR and I hope it proves to be a fruitful venture for the studio/game now & coming future. 1
Cursed Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 (edited) I just wanted to join in with my thanks as well. I'd put BoS down for the last year. When I heard VR was definitely in the pipeline I picked up BoM. Now VR is here and I'm relearning how to fly, I'll probably pay up for BoK. I'd rebuy RoF and all my content in it to get that in VR too. It's healthy to have hopes. Edited April 28, 2017 by Cursed 2
WIS-Redcoat Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I went out and bought the rift last night after reading these forums re VR. I have to say, it was stunning. It's a totally different level of immersion 3

It's a totally different level of immersion Welcome to the dark side! It is awesome in VR for sure, having more fun flying combat on a PC now than I have had in a long time.
Naz Posted April 28, 2017 Author Posted April 28, 2017 I'm finding the simple things such as landing has a whole new level to it now .... getting that approach and glide to the ground just right is so satisfying. It really feels like An achievement when I make a safe landing. It's been a while since simply having a successful and safe flight is just as much fun as getting involved in a dogfight! 1
Wolferl_1791 Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I'm currently running the Stuka, both stock Career (expert difficulty) and PWCG career (with exterior views to be able to move my head around and labels for when I really need them). So far, the best experiences have ended in reaching home with boiling engine, dead gunner and a trail of smoke behind me. Took me a while to figure out I can actually dogfight Migs after dropping my bombs. 6 kills so far in the stock career and 3 in the PWCG one. Success ration probably around 60%. But the best "holy sh&t" moment was during a train station bombing mission. The entire town lit up AAA fire against me. There were at least 10 AAA nests in there. Felt like being a kamikaze at Okinawa. Bullets flying everywhere missing me by a few meters. Dropped my bomb just as a train was leaving the station. The locomotive escaped and I followed it with a few passes, being afraid of enemy fighters being scrambled from the nearby airfield. At every pass, I had to slip into the tiny holes in the wall of bullets that were coming from my side. Best VR moment to date for me. Finally they got me, and got me hard. Ripped my entire vertical stabilizer. Game noted me for dead, but I could still fly. I headed home, reached the airfield and began an emergency landing. But as my speed dropped, so did my fuselage stabilization. At less than 100m from the strip, my right wing slipped and I plunged into the ground. Survived, somehow. When I took off my headset, I had no idea where I was. 9
Naz Posted May 1, 2017 Author Posted May 1, 2017 Man o man o man ... Just did a stock campaign mission in a Yak. Mission was to protect some ships in the river at Stalingrad. Took off and flew to the target area ... got shots in on some enemy fighters and a Stuka as it was doing its run at the ships ... hit the Stuka but not in time as I watched the ship explode. My rustiness in flight sims came to the fore and I was hit by a Stuka tail gunner ... sight impaired and saw some blood in my vision. I opened the canopy as oil covered the windscreen and saw a runway near the city... I had to lean out of the cockpit to see the runway as I nursed my damaged plane and my wounded body to the ground. Got down in once piece and despite the mission failed message I considered it a mission well played ! Awesome fun, awesome immersion !! This VR stuff ain't half good innit? 1
Myscion Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 The best way to do it would be to release ROF remastered for 50-70$. Add the VR improvements and all the other engine improvements. Other than that use all the same old content and include all the planes. This way it would attract more new people to ROF and 777 studios could still make $ for all the work of updating ROF. Hell I'd pay for it.
BlueHeron Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 I'd love to see that, but if the team is working on RoF then they're not working on Battle of Kuban or Battle of Midway. 1

CIA_Windhawk Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 +1 I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the VR implementation. Having a blast. It is VERY well done in every regard.
Herne Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Be sure to try the i16 in VR. I can't count how many hours I've flown since the VR Update, probably well over 100, I took the i16 for a spin for the first time last night, playing on WoL server, I had a whole new wow moment. I've decided to buy all unowned premium planes today, as a thank you for some outstanding VR implementation
