dburne Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 (edited) Hey gang, I am just curious what your experience is with this. In the release notes of 2.009, it was mentioned for VR that a performance gain can be had by lowering the game resolution below one's native monitor resolution. This would result in increased performance, and no impact on the image in the HMD as it runs at it's own native resolution. My monitor is a 1920x1080, and thought I would give this a try and I lowered it to like 1024x768 or somewhere around there, don't remember exact numbers but it was certainly lower. If I gained any in performance by doing this, I certainly did not notice. Now my performance is already pretty darn good, but I would have thought I maybe might notice ASW not kicking in as much, but I did not. Plus - and this is probably all in my imaginations - I could have sworn the image in the Rift had lost some of it's clarity. So I was wondering what other's have found by trying this? OrLoK Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I've not really noticed any visible change, but I haven't really delved into it. This was at 800x600
kissklas Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 I'm running windowed at 640*480. Haven't noticed much change:-p
dburne Posted April 21, 2017 Author Posted April 21, 2017 Windowed 800x600. Definite improvement in HMD I will have to give that a try, previously when I tried I was running full screen. Thanks,
predator036 Posted April 21, 2017 Posted April 21, 2017 Absolutely if it affects the quality in my hmd Htc Vive. When I play 1024x768 I have a rate of 89 fps with a lower quality in the hmd, especially on the horizon are sawtooth teeth. When I play 1920x1080 on the monitor, in the hmd it looks much better, the saw teeth disappear on the horizon, I still have 89 constant frames. TOTALLY CONFIRMED WITH SEVERAL TESTS. My pc: I7 4790k, 32 gb Ram Ddr4, ssd 512 gb, Nvidia Titan X Pascal, W10 64 bits.

I am seeing that is my experience as well, plus I really do not seem to be gaining much if any in the performance department by lowering the res either. I have gone back to my monitor's native 1920x1080 resolution, just looks better to me. I did seem to get a little performance improvement though switching full screen off and running in windowed mode.
Wolf8312 Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 I dont think it looks better but it does look kinda different bigger maybe but then I think the mind is playing tricks to be honest. I would imagine that the devs wouldnt just make a statement like this without having done the tests and found that performance was indeed increased?
coconut Posted April 22, 2017 Posted April 22, 2017 No difference for me either. It might be different with slower GPUs however.
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Yes if your GPU is sat on 95-99% usage running things.then turning down the mirror will probably help. But if GPU sat on 45-50% usage @ 4K (like 1080ti)than i doubt it will help anything
HagarTheHorrible Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Lowered screen res to below native ( full screen) My controls became unresponsive when flying as my mouse cursor left the gaming area. I had to lift my goggles to persuade him to come back. Which, if flying close to the ground, could be rather messy.

HagarTheHorrible Posted April 23, 2017 Posted April 23, 2017 Sounds like you need a better " Mouse Trap"... Bwaha! ......and I thought the CHEEZY grin on my face, every time I fly BOX in VR, would have been more than enough !!! 1
marklar Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 I did compare fps between 800x600 and 1080p resolutions and didn't see any difference.
