I don't post often but I am curious. After a long session in the "Duel and Dogfight" server I noticed the I-16's performance seemed a little too good. 

 

Now furballing is its thing so I know the argument of "git gud" will come in my direction but hear me out. 

 

I noticed that the E-Retention and Acceleration on the I-16 is incredibly high. Its climb is insane despite having nothing like the power of the 109-F4 I was flying. Now normally I would accept that he had more E and I misjudged the E-state and so as a result he caught me. This is fair enough. 

 

But there were several instances where I came out of a screaming dive on his tail, he dodged, I pulled up into a climb with emergency power on. And Ill be damned he stayed with me in the resulting climb and shot me down. I don't think the I-16's E characteristics match up with the historical data I have read from German pilots in 1941.

Pure power is not the only factor at play. It does have a good power to weight ratio. A 109 climbs faster than a 190 despite the latter having more power, as the 109 is lighter.

About acceleration I guess it could be explained by comparing both standard weights and power, the 109 F-4 is around 1000 Kg heavier with "just" 250 HP advantage at sea level (both planes in emergency power).

I-16 Type 24 p/w ratio (emergency at sea level): 0.59 HP/Kg

Bf 109 F-4 p/w ratio (emergency at sea level): 0.47 HP/Kg

 

Also bare in mind BoM version of the I-16 is the best in terms of performance. In the VVS there were also older variants with less performance, like the Type 18, Type 10, Type 5, etc with ~700 HP / ~800 HP engines (Type 24's engine does 1100 HP at emergency power at sea level).

I believe of all the aircraft currently available in-game, the I-16 has the best power to weight ratio by a reasonable margin, so that definitely counts for something

I-16 its a beast.... but is older .... continue fighting and soon can apreciate ( vs a good oponent )  limitations of plane. For example.... after dive if u want avoid a I-16 dont climb ... continue running..
