It may not seem a big deal to you, but...

...after 7 days of trying, I finally managed to taxi, take off, spill some Russian's vodka, AND land at the correct airstrip. Wether or not I can repeat this amazing feat is yet to be seen. I will now sit back and bathe in the accolades from my peers...or not, as the case may be. I am off to have a single malt to celebrate.

I know those feels. I managed to shoot down a sausage muncher's 109 recently. Never dreamed id be able to do it.

Turns out theyre not invincible after all!

Oh, and i landed too! Result!

Practice makes perfect OldJames, but if flying VVS surely that should be a celebratory vodka or a schnapps if you are flying for the Luftwaffe?

It doesn't seem too long ago that the ground was likely to do my plane more damage than the enemy.

I'm at the point where I can almost always take off properly (after a few pirouettes getting to the runway)... but it's usually a one-way ticket

Nicely done! Have fun with these first steps as difficult as they are. I just bought the Mirage 2000C for DCS and its pretty much the same experience for me there despite years of flight sim experience. You just tackle a bit at a time and suddenly its all second nature! :)

Yep, small steps. I remember way back when.. all I could do is ground loop any plane in here. Will have a malt in your honor sir! Congratulations on your first solo flight!

Salutations and congratulations.  :salute:

The most important thing is that you enjoyed the experience and accomplished some flying tasks..

To all the new guys that got their firsts..... CONGRATS!

Its an amazing game and a real work of art. Last night I was soaring with 2 already old and dear cyber friends, one in the UK and another in Aus and myself in SA and we all admired a big building glimmering in the morning light as the sun rose over the snow covered plains in the East. Unflippinbelievable what these DEVS have achieved I must say.

I only bombed an artillery piece in an ME109, but I count that as a kill.

But did you bomb it?

IL2 is a game/simulation (the debate is still open about this one) that need a lot of practice to master it.

And You shall notice that if You stop playing it for some time, when You come back to it You shall ned some time (less time than before) to remaster the automatism You acquired to fly correctly the plane or planes chosen.

But the reward and satisfaction is immense when your successful missions do form a string of victories over Yourself and Your enemies.  :salute:

I wish there was a friendly pve beginners server for us returning/new to bos.

Id much rather practice with fellow wobbly flyers than the Evil AI

You got the hang of it in about the same time I did. Add another week and you'll wonder why you ever worried about takeoff and landing.

Except in the Mig-3. That plane is my nemesis when it comes to landings still.

But now the real challenge begins: Learning to dogfight.

To say I've got the hang of it, might be overstating the facts somewhat. But I get your meaning, and look forward to the relatively stress free times ahead.

LOL no.... unfortunately it was at a friendly objective.

Lol, I know what you mean. I've played flight sims over the years, but only consistently played them for about 4 months now. First week compared to 1-2 months was night and day.

Now I hardly even check takeoff and landing specs or do proper patterns for landings.

You'll only get better the more you do it!

The first sim kill is always very memorable and exciting!

I've gotten to where, in a two flights of JU-52s, I can down 3-4 of them before my ammo runs out. I'm flying the Yak-1 ser.69 even though in 1946 the 109 Kurfurst or Gustav were my go-to planes. I can, in VR, sit and pick on each engine to smoke it with small guns or disable it with cannon fire. I love looking up, turning to the side and just swooping between the two flights as they fire at me. This has netted me some skill in deflection shooting too.

Yeah, even though I could hold my own against nearly anything in 1946 this new game requires a more calculating decision making process. Sure, pump your throttle to 100% and jam on up to take out some baddies, but that's only going to last you 5-8 minutes depending on when your engine decides to seize. I uh, actually haven't gone beyond that point yet. I assume I need to idle for so long and use certain throttle positions and mixture controls and such. I mean, I know engines, drove and maintained a Saleen Supercharged Mustang, I just need numbers and guides.

A lot more fun than crashing huh? Good job.
