Maybe because I'm just a bit slow, maybe it's because I don't have a sly devious nature, maybe it's simply that I prefer realistic immersion rather than winning at any cost just to try and look the big man in front of my piers.

As anyone who has come from TrackIR will attest, VR does not advantage the player, resolution is limiting but FOV and consequent restriction and effort required to check six all spoil a VR players competitiveness on-line.

There is however an exploit, that I'm probably slow to appreciate and hesitate to bring up at the risk of sullying the pure thoughts of similar naive souls but they should probably be aware of it anyway.

It's not easy, not overly helpful, not that that ever stopped anyone trying to gain advantage but, with restrictions off, turning your head to left or right and leaning in that direction, centreing view and then looking over the opposite shoulder and leaning in that direction gives an almost effortless and unimpeaded view to the rear. Like I say it's not that helpful, MOST ESPECIALLY in combat but it does give the VR player a chance to check six more easily.

This exploit might not be a wonderful thing but just as good things can often be exploited for bad maybe there are aspects about this that might be exploited for good. At the moment the exploit is a pain because you have to look one way, recentre and then look the other but there might be the possibility, for good reasons, to adapt this to allow recentering, with canopy restrictions in place to prevent exploitation, to allow a pannable snap view towards checking six ? I'm not sure what the full ramifications might be, as I've just thought of it, but it might work.

Have a play around and see what you think.

I guess this exploit somewhat evens the score with the TrackIr users in regards to easiness of checking six, except for the nausia and loss of situasional awareness it causes (at least for me) in VR.

Track ir users also can do the same thing. Its commonly known AFAIK.

I think some servers can lock you in the cockpit (WOL if i recall correctly) so there is no advantage

You would have to move your entire body to check six outside of cockpit, and yeah very restricted FOV and Resolution. so definitely not an advantage to it. how you going to walk away from your HOTAS and check six whilst keeping good control?

How you guys do the zooming, do you lean forward or can you use a botton like with trackir without any problems and how does it feel when fully zoomed in and out and how restricted is the view compared to normal widescreen monitor?

There is a zoom button that gives you a 2x enlargement, useful to check distant terrain features. I found the zoom is not needed to check the cockpit gauges, which are clear and legible as they are, and neither is it needed to shoot. You can lean in quite a bit, but IMO it's not necessary.

It doesn't feel like the view is restricted in any way, except for the fact that you just can't check six. Your view is practically limited to a left-right +-120 degrees arc in the front of your aircraft.

It's difficult to convey in words, but you are actually THERE, it's not a 2D monitor representation anymore. The cockpit is cramped, the instruments are there in front of you and you feel that you can touch them.

If you really really want to check six you can, say, turn 90 degrees right, recenter view, and when you turn 90 degrees left you are actually looking 180 degrees back, but it's a lot of work, a bit disorienting and unpleasant. I don't think I would ever do it in combat, cost outweighs the benefit.

There is a VR Zoom feature they added, works fairly well for spotting things at a distance like airfields, etc. Not so easy to use when trying to dogfight, but with actual size being viewed not really needed. Leaning forward can give little better view of the gunsight, but again just like real life does nothing as far as zooming farther away objects.

Full zoom in feels a little weird when moving the head around.

Zoom is by button. Leaning forward no more zooms your view than it does in real life. The zoom only affects stuff outside the cockpit, it's a bit like binoculars in that respect. Zooming is not without it's own issues though, looking around while zoomed in distort the view and doesn't help with queasiness, it's helpful for spot checking and initial I.D'ing though.

View compared to a monitor is very subjective, resolution and detail aren't anyware near as good, even zoomed in so a monitor and TrackIR are better, but the feeling of being in the cockpit, in the environment, trumps that and more by a long chalk to my mind.

They are now working on mirrors implementation, which will certainly help the "checking six" issue.

From today's DD:

Having finished Open VR API implementation, we started the work on another long-awaited feature - aircraft rear view mirrors. In fact, rendering the mirrors realistically looking and keeping the performance hit manageable at the same time is a complex task.>>>

Ain't that typical, nothing for ages and then three along in quick succession.

Im sure its just awesome for the immersion alone and better then a monitor even with these shortcommings, thx for the info.

I'm all about immersion. It's an amazing feeling, as soon as i starting simming in VR I couldn't go back to triple screens. It's just not even close. It sure does have some failings, but its getting there. Hell I didn't even imagine I would see what we have here today, when i pre-ordered my DK2 2-3 years ago. Its all happened so quick.
