HagarTheHorrible Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 In a good way, sort of. BoX in VR is really, really good, probably the best VR flight sim implementation to date. The trouble is it also gives a very tantalising glimps of the future, of the possibilities. BoX VR really gives you a sense of presence, of being in that three dimensional space, everything seems so much more real, to have real depth and solidity. It's frustrating knowing that we are on the cusp of something big but, given the resources available to the development team the focus will have to shift back, away from VR, towards other, required, targets. There are a million and one little things, improvements that will, step by step, draw us into the Il2 reality. The next few years will be really really exciting but frustrating at the same time knowing that VR, as good as it is isn't the prime direction around which everything else revolves, but shoehorned in around all the other important stuff. I appreciate this might all sound like gobbledygook to those of you haven't tried BoX in VR but if you've been there then you'd understand and notice all the little things, the little details that when implemented or improved will grasp hold and draw you in ever deeper. 1
dburne Posted April 17, 2017 Posted April 17, 2017 (edited) I honestly don't know how much more the development team could really do for this sim in VR for BoX. It is so darned good already out of the chute. I was amazed at how high I could run my graphics settings on my rig and still maintain very good performance along with great visuals. Actually I was astonished. I am so hooked on this sim now. I think the next big leap will be in next generation devices here in a couple of years or little less, with wider FOV and higher resolution, eye tracking, and better ways of hand tracking. Maybe even wireless technology for the headsets. And the consumer base and market share will grown, hence the focus it gets by developers will increase as well. Good times ahead! =IL2AU=chappyj Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 the biggest thing they can do is listen to the feedback and sort out a few issues with head movement and cockpits. once thats done i reckon the best potential actually lies in roomscale hand controllers and full body movement (out of chair) waist and tailgunning 2
Wolf8312 Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Yeah its frustrating they wont look into the gameseat because that would make a huge diffrence.
OrLoK Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Try to push sales. The more they generate the more they can invest into the game. Mention the game in all appropriate threads and forums. Spread the Word... 1
BOO Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 VR flight simming - The ONLY option for VR-ers bored of racing circuits and tired of tripping over the dog and accidentally punching junior in the face whilst freeing hostages...........

von_Tom Posted April 30, 2017 Posted April 30, 2017 Hagar, I disagree with your focus on the dev team. It will be very likely that all new aircraft will seamlessly slip into the current BoX universe for VR. The frustrating wait will be for VR headsets and computing power to improve and THEN it will be the delay for the BoX coding to be redone to make everything look graphically better. For me the graphics will be the thing and that means resolution and losing the SDE. Mind you, I am noticing the SDE less and less. As it is, it is excellent and the implementation is great, For example I just spent 30 minutes flying around a quick mission map in a La5 landing on an airfield that was in a depression. Very coo, indeed. l von Tom

Very coo, indeed. l von Tom I suppose the question we have to ask is " Is the future of flight sims VR ?" The answer, most certainly, won't be for everyone but, and I think the next generation headsets will be the tipping point, resolution being the present biggest stumbling block, even if it is still aspirational for many it will rapidly reach tipping point. Pacific fighters will probably land, just miss or crash into the carrier deck, about the same time. DO the dev's continue to optimize for legacy monitor users, or do they start early to make sure the game is focused on those aspects that a higher resolution VR will emphasis although, obviously, not dismissing the interests of monitor users, that for some time will still make up the majority ? I think lighting will be increasingly important in creating a believability, a sense of presence, as VR moves forward. Presence and monitor gaming don't particularly go together, so while it might be nice for monitor users to have improved lighting it might not be that crucial for them. For VR users however it might be super beneficial in creating that sense of presence. A bit like the uncanny valley the better it becomes the more we notice that isn't correct. Another aspect might be introducing additional gaming peripheral support into the game, like hand controllers. All these things may not be main stream or even average stream at the moment but as soon as VR and flight simming goes hand in glove (I'm so witty, sometimes I even astound myself) then it will be expected as standard and people will flock to the latest and best experience. I don't overly enjoy DCS but I do fly it in VR, because it was what was on offer. BoX gives me a better experience so now, after a years leave of absence I'm back and stumping up cash, mainly, it appears, to provide target practice for the great unwashed of multiplayer land.
