dburne Posted May 8, 2017 Posted May 8, 2017 I am loving the VR experience in multiplayer, I mostly fly on the WoL server, but struggle to ID contacts, unless at close range. I played some more of the campaign last night, and made a recording of one of the scripted missions in BoM. The briefing was to taxi to the runway, to the left of my wing leader and stay with him basically while we chased some attacking aircraft. Very nice! It is truly amazing in VR isn't it. I am currently in the latter part of the Stalingrad Campaign, will have to try the BOM one when I am done- if I ever get through the whole thing lol. I would like to see some taxi to runway and takeoff missions for sure. VR has definitely brought me back to this sim after a long hiatus, in a big way. I am very pleased! its a 4970k processor but not overclocked. 32GB Ram, SLI GTX 1080's and Oculus Rift CV1 Whoa, you know that 4790K processor is just begging for a nice overclock right...
CIA_Windhawk Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Oculus guy here, and old IL2-1946 fanatic. I've finally found my way back home to IL2 because of the VR implementation. I've owned the BOS license for a while (i'm a founder), but I never really played much until VR was implemented. Loving it now. Just a dumb question... it is possible at all to change the size of the observation window on the PC monitor? Or is that a fixed size? I would love to stretch it for a better viewing experience for those not in the headset with me.

AlexandreCosta Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Finally my oculus arrived. Tried some racing sims and a few oculus store free games. And now I'm trying to configure il-2. It's running relatively good, but the smoke and dust appear as big colorful squares. Really weird. I'm trying to find what could be causing it.

Sounds like you are an ATI Radeon user - you need to update your graphics driver.
JG4_Sputnik Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 (edited) Try the newest graphics card driver. Edited May 12, 2017 by JG4_Sputnik
Jade_Monkey Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 (edited) Good job the Vive comes with beer vision... https://youtu.be/QGxNbqVE3wY?t=76 Wtf, ive been missing out!!! I have to set up my camera i guess. Regarding controllers, i definitely recommend them. The immersion is mind blowing. Try Arizona sunshine if you can. Edited May 12, 2017 by Jade_Monkey
gapman Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 I started flight simulations with SDOE and later Clod but lost interest over time. I found Project Cars was so so much more immersive in vr that I had to get this simulation when I saw that there was vr support. I'm just so taken with this, get a big grin and few giggles very time I fly. The best utilization of vr I have seen. Very impressed. I have a Vive plugged into a 1070 card. 5
Quax Posted May 12, 2017 Posted May 12, 2017 Make sure you fly the I16 in VR ! For whatever reason this beast thrilled me the most. If I had the time, I would take her for a ride every day 1
BlueHeron Posted May 13, 2017 Posted May 13, 2017 It turns out performance on a single RX 480 is pretty acceptable on the lowest possible settings. At least I can start enjoying this while I wait for a new video card!
AlexandreCosta Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 I'm using a RX 480 too. It keeps around 85 fps, but sometimes I have some huge drops, it's really annoying. It seems that changing the graphics settings doesn't change how often I have these fps drops.

If I had the time, I would take her for a ride every day So far its the most flown plane in VR by me, I just love the openness of the plane in VR...simply stunning.

If I had the time, I would take her for a ride every day I'll have to try the I16. It's probably the same reason I love open wheelers in racing sims in VR, even though I was never fussed on them before VR ... that sense of unrestricted freedom is just so awesome in VR.
Jack59 Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 Make sure you fly the I16 in VR ! For whatever reason this beast thrilled me the most. If I had the time, I would take her for a ride every day Couldn't agree more. I think it's that VR plus the open cockpit yields an unparalleled sensation of flight.
Herne Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 Couldn't agree more. I think it's that VR plus the open cockpit yields an unparalleled sensation of flight. RoF is just begging for VR. Ariel combat just doesn't get any more up close and personal than that 3

OrLoK Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 The image onscreen in VR is always limited im afraid, you can bump up the res but it will always remain centred with black borders in VR.

CIA_Windhawk Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Mine is configured the same way, but my observation monitor still has black bars on the left and right like this image. Maybe that's unavoidable?
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Unavoidable I think. May be due to it only rendering your left eyes perspective onto the monitor.
scrapmetal Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Mine is configured the same way, but my observation monitor still has black bars on the left and right like this image. Maybe that's unavoidable? Oh, I see what you mean. That's the perspective of one eye. Unfortunately, that's the way the game is mirrored on to the monitor. Most VR games do it this way.
Uufflakke Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Sorry but 1999 1/2 of those views were me ( If you want to know. I got board half way through the last one, same old, same old , nothing new to see) ;-) We need to to get Froogle to do a proper BoXVR Vlog, if he isn't already doing one, it would be awesome and might push the sim out to a wider flight sim community. Froogle says in his latest update that he tried it and will probably make a vid about it soon. In that case the Dev team should send Froogle the upcoming Kuban map with its plane set etc. Just like DCS did with their alpha Normandy map and the Spitfire a couple of days ago.Froogle is highly enthusiastic about it and - for my feeling- the video turned out in a DCS WWII promotion video. Not VR related though.
Herne Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Because I was so impressed with the VR in IL2, I bought all premium planes, that I didn't own. I took the P40 for a spin last night, but it seemed like the scale was off a bit, like the cockpit was really huge, and there would be no way I could reach the peddles, or even the stick. Has anyone else noticed this ?
Quax Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 The P40 cockpit was much bigger than f.e. the 109 or 190. I think it´s correct as it is.
Lensman Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Ok, you guys are making me both jealous and curious. I've played BoX, RoF, CoD since they were first released and like a lot of us have a full set up of joystick, throttle, pedals, throttle quadrant, triple monitor set up, TracIR and a decent PC...........I swore to myself that I wouldn't get sucked into a VR headset............... but I'm reading sooo much good stuff it's got me thinking........ Is it really that good to invest in or wait for further development? Can it really be that good to ditch the triple monitor and TracIR? If I were to dive in, which is the best current VR? Thanks For IL-2 I think that the Rift is best because of the comfort when wearing it. IL-2 sessions tend to be lengthy and the VIVE is (whilst superb) heavy and uncomfortable. For the same reason, it's easier to snap your head around with the Rift. I own both by the way.
BlueHeron Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Agreed, it's really amazing just how comfortable the Rift is, even when turning your head suddenly.
dburne Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 Agreed, it's really amazing just how comfortable the Rift is, even when turning your head suddenly. Definitely, I probably have just over 40 hours in BoS with my Rift and it is very comfortable. I can fly some pretty long sessions with no problem.
Herne Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 checked my stats on WoL and it reckons I've had about 42 Flying hours just this month on that server alone. I also play campaign and other MP servers. That's all using the rift.

I was going to add a comment to my post above, that DSC Normandy looks very tempting, but I already spend too much time on il2.
Panthera_Tigris Posted May 27, 2017 Posted May 27, 2017 Hey guys, I am happy you are having so much fun with IL2 on your VR headsets! :D I have had mine for almost a year but didn't have much time to play with it until now. I was hoping if one of you fine gentlemen would help me with their graphic settings for my Vive? I booted up the sim and while the situational awareness and scale is outstanding, I have some trouble with "shimmering" and everything being "too bright". I reduced the gamma correction to the lowest setting and it didn't help. My cockpit looks okay, it's the terrain and sky that I am having trouble with. I have a 1080Ti, so if anyone with the same card or a 1080 or a Titan can share their in-game graphic settings for using IL2 BoS on the Vive, that'd be super! Also what do you set the SS value to in SteamVR? Also, does BoM look better in VR? I only have BoS currently.

Also what do you set the SS value to in SteamVR? Hey Cranium, I have the 1080Ti too, but I use the Rift not a Vive, but you should be able to get the same performance with these settings. 1. Brightness Edit the Startup.cfg file in \IL-2 BOX\data and change the gamma entry (around line 31) to 0.65 I've tinkered around with this number a bit, and this is where I'm happiest with it for reducing the brightness. Be warned however, if you do fly at night time for whatever reason, it is DARK! 2. Settings Here are the settings I run with as configured in game, and these are then Augmented with the Nvidia Inspector Profile settings in step 3. (I've taken these from a desktop rendered session rather than from VR so they're easier to read). 3. Performance / Visual Enhancements Setup an Nvidia Inpector Profile for BOS, here is mine: 4. Tweaks I don't know if the Vive has it, but the Rift has the ASW setting to try and smooth things out. Unfortunately this usually results in odd rendering of items through the prop, and a squiggly gun cross. If you can, disable it. I hope they work for you! I get great performance and the view is STUNNING I also got my install of DCS 2.1 down earlier and flew around Normandy. Anyone wondering how it stacks up... Stay here, you're not missing anything yet, it's not even in the same ball park in terms of visuals and performance. It made me appreciate all the more what a stunning job of VR implementation we have here with IL-2. 1
Panthera_Tigris Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 Woah, thanks a lot! I'll be trying these settings out tonight!! Sorry to hear that about DCS 2.1 though. I just bought NTTR and FC3 today (just starting out with DCS). Plan was to stick to IL2 for my WWII simming needs and DCS for modern fixed wings and rotary craft. Thanks again for taking the time to post your screenshots!
schurem Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 dcs 2.1 isnt that bad, its just raw as heck. they dont call it an alpha for nothing. turning off some settings and enabling them elsewhere made it playable and really freaking gorgeous. so on my drive, il2 and dcs co-exist. they complement eachother. one thing il2 does hands down better than dcs is clouds.
OrLoK Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 Im equally a DCS fan as well as a BoX fan but i find im spending more VR time in BoX. Im hankering for the channel but feel im personally getting more from BoX than DCS at the moment. I miss the clicky pits but the sheer fum im getting from BoX is more than DCS. Its a really subjective issue, i understand that and dont wish to disparage the DCS devs or the fanbase. Its great we have two great vr sims. Cant wait for CLoD to get VR! L
Highwayman Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 Its a really subjective issue, i understand that and dont wish to disparage the DCS devs or the fanbase. I don't mean to bash DCS either, apologies if it came over that way, it wasn't my intention. Normandy is Alpha and as such it will be subject to performance issues, bugs, glitches, etc. I guess I'm just on the fence about releasing Alpha software to the public at all. I get that we all want it now, but I fear it may do more harm than good to their reputation and sales.
OrLoK Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 From what i remember you came over just fine! I *do* love DCS but BoX has stolen my heart.
sinned Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 From what i remember you came over just fine! I *do* love DCS but BoX has stolen my heart. Is that equivalent to I *do* love my girlfriend, but her mother has stolen my heart?
BlueHeron Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 Its great we have two great vr sims. Cant wait for CLoD to get VR! I wasn't sure about this. Thought I read that they were wrapping up CloD with the latest patch (No VR) and then moving onto the Med. Does this mean they will add VR support to the engine later and it will work for both theaters of war?

At least they will have moved to DX11 with it. No promises at this time though, lot of work needs to be done improving/moving some cockpit 2d textures that exist to 3d to get a VR implementation. They have hopes though. I am keeping fingers crossed! Ooh, to have both Il-2 BoX and TFS CLiffs of Dover available to me in VR would be supreme! I would happily support both full steam ahead.
