You guys have convinced me to buy one. I was waiting until the next generation. But after reading all the comments here in the forum I've changed my mind. I hope it arrives soon. :)

You won't regret it.

I felt the same way you did, but the form posts convinced me too.

I am extremely satisfied and the difference from track IR is astounding.

I'm waiting for OR 2.0.  I think the product will be much improved and the price may come down.

What are the best estimates for next gen OR and Vive release dates?

I'm not a loyally following VR guy but I think I had read that CV2 could be as far as 5 years out.

I wouldn't hold your breath. OR 2.0 isn't likely to come out any time soon. I would be surprised if it hits the market inside of 2-3 years. Oculus was looking at big changes for the next HMD. Higher res, eye tracking, wireless . . . I think they will be busy for quite awhile trying to implement that plus whatever else hasn't been teased.

I would have thought the earliest would be next March/April.  Announce at CES and then out to the shops a couple of months latter.  That said it might just be a mid life update rather than next generation.  The benefits would be wider adoption as second hand CV1's start being available and the hardware to drive them is considered more mainstream thus encouraging more software development... leading to more headset sales etc.

That said, it might be a whole year more on top of that for the next fully next gen model.  I think it might very well depend on competition.  If Pimax, or others, puts together a good, all box's ticked headset then both Oculus and Vive might be compelled to jump.  If it was up to them I suspect that they would be happy to give it another year so that development work will be mature enough to offer a compelling difference, other than just resolution, even if it's resolution, if anything, that is holding wider acceptance up.

I think it'll be another two generations before VR hmd's hardware are feature complete, or nearly so.

Regarding Oculus and the Rift, I'm worried that higher resolution isn't needed for social interaction (Facebook spaces) or for the pretty games and experiences that are developed for VR. I think they might focus on comfort, wireless, price, running without a PC...

Zuckerberg does specifically mention 4k. With eye tracking it is very likely we will see a significant improvement in resolution purely from the rendering savings earned through tracking your eye. Ostensibly the HMD would only need to render in greater detail the things you are looking at. Anyways I would say your concerns are unfounded. The future of VR is closely tied to how good they can make it look and the easiest way to realize that is through higher resolutions. Give the article dburne linked a read some fascinating stuff in there.

Agreed, I think Oculus has some very big plans for it's Rift division and are planning for the very long term with heavy market penetration in 5-8 years time.

For both the PC and Mobile consumer demand.

2018 will be the year I buy a new PC with an Nvidia Volta card, buy an HTC Vive, and perhaps by the end of the year we will have early access BoMi.

Yeah I will be due my next PC upgrade as well, already planning on a new build sometime in 2018.

With all this hoopla about VR with this sim (my favourite sim, to be fair), I must ask:

* Has anyone tried using the Oculus Rift with a USB 3.0 hub? That thing eats a lot of ports, and as simmers we're already using up quite a few of them.

* Do VR users need to buy silk scarves to stop chafing, or do the VR rigs allow "movement amplification", sort of like TrackIR does? You know, so you don't need to turn completely around to look behind you?

Silk scarf !! Genius :) I knew there was something missing :)

I've noticed quite a few guys are talking about VR when I play online... but how are they managing to type?

I have to peek under my rift, lift it up a little to see the kb. I tend not to do this while flying, but after I have been shot down lol

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Maybe later. For now I'll spend a lot of time on flight and racing sims (wich have always been my favourite genres of game). But thanks for the advice, I'll defenitely consider it.

The controllers do add another dimension, but if you are mainly a simmer they're not essential.

I rarely room scale nowadays, the games don't have the longevity, for me compared to sims.

YMMV!

I'm also considering Touch controllers, but it's difficult to break away from the stick or the wheel long enough to try something new!

Yeah I know what you mean, I have been spending the bulk of my time in flight sims but I do occasionally enjoy a little break for some Touch game action.

Keep meaning to add a racing sim here in the near future, I used to love them years ago and has been a long time.  Still have my original Red Momo racing wheel setup around here somewhere...

So much to do so little time lol. Bulk being spent mostly in BoX now since 2.009.

Yes, so little time and so many good sims today with so much content (specially racing sims). I just wish RoF had VR support, it's been my favourite flight sim for years. But IL-2 is great too, so that's fine.

Btw, my Oculus is delayed. :(

Can't wait to try VR for the first time. I've been playing RoF and AMS (racing sim) a lot, because I know that after playing in VR I won't come back to non-VR sims.

Project cars is fun and well suited to VR, it's not an uber sim but is often on sale and has enough to get you back into the swing of things. Keep an eye out for it in bundles etc.

When I got my Rift, BoS VR was not out yet. I tested it with another flightsim. Although it had the wow effect, I couldn´t fly more than 20 mins before feeling sick. I was expecting this, and it was no surprise.

After flying now BoS for two days in VR, I could change my mind. The Wow effect was even bigger, and I didn´t feel bad anymore. Something is different, but I can´t tell, what it is.

You will not regret. It´s a fantastic experience. It´s so close to the real thing at it has never been before.

I am loving the VR experience in multiplayer, I mostly fly on the WoL server, but struggle to ID contacts, unless at close range.

I played some more of the campaign last night, and made a recording of one of the scripted missions in BoM. The briefing was to taxi to the runway, to the left of my wing leader and stay with him basically while we chased some attacking aircraft.

The airfield was under attack as the mission launched, which added a sense of urgency, but in VR this was some truly immersive stuff. Loving this game so damn much, and its all because of VR.
