VR related sales boost

Looks like if I was really tempted I could use virtual audio cable to read the sound from the rift and send it to the transducer before teamspeak was added.

I.e. I can make a virtual device that TS sends to, another that  IL2 sends to, read from that one then mix them to go to the rift audio.

VR is the biggest thing to happen in gaming since the introduction of 3D acceleration (Voodoo etc).

VR is very new and right now everyone is trying to find formats that works.

Flight/Spaceship simulator VR is perhaps the format that works the best.

I really like Vanishing Worlds, Raw Data and Arizona Sunshine, but I only play them for maybe 30 min at a time, before needing a break.

Flight/Space Simulators on the other hand i can play for hours.

Standing up and moving around is hard work (at least in VR) and you often find yourself in a situation where you want to keep playing but need to take a break.

IMO its THE issue with room scale VR. For me gaming whether its a shooter or a flight simulator is something I do uninterrupted for a few hours at a time.

While room scale VR is mind blowing i think we will see that in the future most VR gaming is done seated, wheter its done in a Spaceship, flying a BF-109 or driving a BattleMech.

this VR supporting is really a new thing to me. one thing about no zoom-in function with VR is a big concern for me, Do not you-the VR players think this a big disadvantage for gaming?

The devs put in a vr zoom and vr-recenter view feature into their implementation.

Both work quite well.

I find I do not need zoom for up close combat, only for identifying at distances.

huh? i bound the zoom key to my hotas, its really useful in vr.

I find the same.

I will pay flight sims for hours at a time, and some of those other fps games for around 30min to an hour.

I do also enjoy room scale, but like you can only take so much at one time. But sitting in my chair flying BoS, I can go for a really long time and have been.

Many, if not all, of those other games designed for Touch controllers do not have the depth and scale of something like a flight sim - not even close. But they can be fun for the short term, and very entertaining.

It can be daunting to be playing a FPS standing in room scale to have someone sneak up behind and you find yourself going - oh s%$#...

I have only used racing and flying sims in the rift.  Other games that required walking I couldnt adjust to.  I must add that I played them while sitting down.

Then I recently got the touch controllers and 3 sensors and I felt like it opened up a lot more games I would be interested in playing.  I tried walking games and found I could stay in them for an hour or two - until I gave up not because I felt sick.   At first I got severe vertigo but I was lucky to get used to it very quickly.   Problem was not enough space..   So I ended up making a base for my aces seat and pedals so that I could easily push it out of the space.   That made it really easy to move the rig and play roomscale games.

Then....  I bought BOS and I have not bothered to move it once lol.

@Gustav, it really depends what you call a disadvantage in your game..    I have always been above middle of the pack, good but not at the top and often it's because of the choices I make that gives me the most reward for playing the game.  I might be at a disadvantage with a rift but the rewards for playing the game are higher to me with it.   The satisfaction wasn't measured with the K/D ratio.   I admit, it wasnt always the case but I am a bit older now and my attitude towards a lot of games keeps me more on an even keel than the ups and downs of trying to be at the top.

I was just looking at how to use my transducer setup for this. I have a 4CH amp driving 4 of them on my racing system. I was hoping to put one on my flying seat and plug it in to the amp when flying but I see that you have to use audio.

There doesnt seem to be any telemetry exported from the game for other bits of software to drive the transducers which is unfortunate. Given there is all sorts of other stuff happening on audio like teamspeak etc I am a bit worried that I will get lots of thumping from unwanted sources?

though not ideal the audio does a nice job with my bass shakers. Also I do believe telemetry export is in the works for the future? Will need a co-sign on that to be sure.

I agree I dont have space at the moment for roomscale but its very frustrating at the moment anhow because its not wireless. I know people say its not an issue and maybe its not for simple wave shooter experiences. But anything more involved like the brilliant 'a chair in the room' was maddening. Roomscale is going to be massive I have no doubt and those kind of adventure experiences are even more immersive than flightsims to be honest but they aint their yet due to how uncomfortable it gets after a while. VorpX is brilliant though, I've been playing black mesa and portal 2 on cinema screen, hell I even play hitman and thats not even in 3D. The thing I find is that even if its not full VR, just the sensory deprivation of the headset creates a much more focused and immersive experience because you are concentrated entirely on the game. I certainly dont regret buying my Vive and I rarely play any game without it any more, but got to agree BOS and DCS are the best experiences to be had at the moment.

Since the VR patch, 10 of my gaming friends have purchased BOS just for VR, we are now running a locked VR server and most plan of getting the rest of the IL2 series, I myself purchased BOS,BOM & BOK and all the extra planes just because of VR.

All they need to do is really tidy some stuff up in this sim that would make it exceptional (editing icons via a LUA file would be one).

I thought telemetry export was ruled out because of the potential for cheating? Imagine IL-2 BOS + motion platform!

I would hope not.   I remember in the original it had a flag so a server could turn disable it on the clients side.   Of course, in the original you could provide inputs through the interface, not just read outputs.

I would imagine that some fairly useful information could be read from an output only interface without being able to be used for cheating.

I certainly hope this is something more than anecdotal and it actually represents a big boost for the franchise.

I'm sure it's a significant boost. I only bought BOS because I mistakenly thought it would launch with VR. I only bought BOM and BOK when it was announced that VR would be supported with the move to DX11.

I have to say that this is a really good implementation of VR. I'm freaking addicted, always looking forward to my next IL2 fix. I enjoy IL2 now in a way that I was never able to before. Once the HMD's have better res, and are even lighter, I suspect in games such as this they will become more popular than trackir

From my VR using buddy, it's better than non VR. It's apparently a lot easier to shoot because of the depth perception. Only issue is you have trouble IDing contacts. I've been flying on his wing, so when he spots something I let him know what it is, which is a good solution.

I personally am getting better at plane identification in VR. I'm not too dependent on my wingman anymore. Think I've clocked about 10 hours on WOL with the Vive. Im sure others will find improvement in their identification ability too.

Still running on Super Sampling setting of 1.0 due to my PC specs.

I cranked up the SS to 1.5 to see the difference and it was significantly better. If you haven't tried it, don't. You will be disappointed you can't play at that resolution.

Time to replace the PC.

I still suck at identifying. I have been following teammates and scaring them all over WOL.

With VR I need to be at shooting distance to be 100% sure (even with zoom).

Just be aware that higher supersampling settings reduce the model size and make it harder to spot/identify aircraft.

Umm no. That is not how Il-2 renders objects. Generally, the higher your supersampling the more defined is the object, but it isn't smaller, just less washed out.

Nothing to do about it until eyetracking with 4k VR comes out. I need a 2D wingman to look for targets in the Stuka as well ;)   Or I take my son into the backseat as spotter - that´s good fun

That sounds like fun!

I need to start the process of making a son. I'll keep you posted.
