VR and new skins/textures question for anyone.

Hey all, I was curious, now that we got VR finally I was noticing looking out the cockpit that the plane skins/textures were a lot more prominent, especially the he-111 and the Ju's...etc. When I say prominent I mean now we have true life scale, those are some big engines and wings we are seeing. But my question is there still is a strong fuzziness, low detail almost now quality when you are seeing it at life-size and a few feet away from you. I am no skin or texture artist but if any read this or, just anyone with info on the game engine, capabilities, etc can offer up what they know perhaps.

 

I guess what I am asking is can new skins be created to give greater detail to make them look even nicer/sharper or is there a limitation that prevents such granular levels of detail we have access to see in VR? Maybe some of you have some insight to offer up. I went in the skin sub and dl'd 4k textures and they look great, I am double checking to make sure I did not just get a 2k version but in VR they are so big to scale they still seem to have that no hard lines/fuzzy edged kinda of effect. Hopefully I am explaining it enough. Maybe other VR users know what I mean. But beggars can't be choosers and everything is gorgeous.Just the external parts of your plane from in-cockpit I am talkin here.

 

Anyways, was curious what others might think or offer up. Oh and I am on ultra setting with a 1080 so tryin to push the max capable currently.

The difference between 2K and 4K skins is easy to tell.  2K skins are about 5MB whereas 4K skins should be about 21MB.  Unfortunately all Official skins are 2K.  There is a huge difference in the detail of the 4K skins on a monitor so I assume there would also be in VR.

 

In addition to the 4K skins you should also download new 4K "normal maps" for any aircraft they are available for (also 21MB).  These go in different folders than the skins.  Most downloads include install instructions.  Normal maps underlie the skin giving texture.

Hey thank you, this was my issue. I did indeed grab a 2k file. Unfortunately, it appears there are not many 4k skins out. At least that I could find. A lot of templates and wip, many German planes have 4k, but really was hoping to find a he-111, Ju, Pe, and i16 but no luck so far. If anyone is aware of where to find any of those please post a reply. Wanted to pretty everything up for a couple friends coming to check it out for the 1st time and hopefully jumping on-board themselves.

 

For any VR users who read this. 4k skins are almost a requirement and I encourage any other users who haven't tried 4k skins in VR to do so. Hopefully more will come out and all those giant twin engines out our side windows will look as pretty as these 109's and 190's I have found and tested with.

Hey thank you for the skin search tip. I had assumed they would all be in the 4k sub but with your guidance I guess I have found out that is not the case. I will dig into the skin sub gen and see if I can find 4k's for the ones I was hoping for. Thanks again. The ones I did find earlier look amazing in VR so want to see if I can find good alts for as many planes as possible currently.

Oh man, thank you so much for taking the time to post this. I really appreciate it. I have found a few digging in the sub but missed or missing quite a few you list. Thanks a lot. I really am looking forward to the various wip 4k's folks in the community are working on. Will just have to wait for them to get released.
