The cockpit thump in VR

All those problems will be obsolete once the next VR HMD iteration comes out that features a much wider FOV and higher pixeldensity.
Right now checking six is not only harder due to the fact that you have to actually turn 1:1 degree wise but also that you have a very narrow FOV on top of that.

Otherwise there is really nothing that comes even remotely close to the immersion BOX offers when flying it in VR.
The devs really did a hell of a job!!!

As for your view being more restricted than track IR I would need to see comparisons. Finding the perfect angles to look from is a process of discovery not unlike what a pilot would need to learn.

This is a flawed comparison. TrackIR has curves that are adjustable, your head doesn't. Moreover, VR has a very narrow fov, and it's only clear in the center. It's not as in RL either, it's more like if you would fly with foggy scuba googles. This is not a problem for looking forward or to the sides, but checking your six is more difficult than using trackir or than it is in RL.

Fortunately my "109 cockpit" has this to assist with 6 checks.

A little swivel can go a long ways.

Are you using VR? I have tried to swivel but I inevitably trigger the bump sound.  I have flown in VR in BOX for around 10 hours so far and I still can't figure out reliably hte confines of the cockpit (as they don't match the actual cockpit as displayed). It's a bit of a guessing game for me that requires some pretty unique and impractical body positions to check my six without triggering the bump (if it is even possible in the plane I'm flying... some just aren't).  In reality, you should be able to press your head right up against the glass if you need to.  We should also be able to lean forward as far as the physical cockpit allows so you can look backwards.  The artificial restriction when moving forward is perhaps the most frustrating for me.

Still, loving me some VR in BOX nonetheless.

Don't worry about thump when moving your head, it's there as a safety measure to tell your brain you hit a barrier in the game while your real head it's still moving.

After the last patch the sound is very muted and my brain starts to ignore it now, although I'd like to have an option (even by editing config file) to disable it for good.

Yeh, the thump is far better, much more muted now, far less annoying. I don't think I'm being shot at all the time anymore.

The problem is this barrier is a lot smaller than the cockpit, at least in Bf109.

I recall reading a RAE report, I think it concerned the possible adoption of a blown canopy for the Spitfire.  As I recall, it stated you couldn't actually turn your head to check your 6 without tucking your chin in first because, if you didn't, your  O2 mask and mic would hit the canopy.

I really want to get love this game.. The graphics are just amazing, but every time I try and get into it the in-cockpit VR experience puts me right off.

I've never had motion sickness from any VR game, but the way the whole plane starts to move with your head in this game is really weird and nauseating. Even in the D111 bomber (I think it is) where there's plenty of room inside, the plane starts to move with my head movement. There's a tick box in the latest update settings which 'states limit VR movement' I have it un-ticked but it doesn't seem to do anything??

I also play War Thunder, DCS and Eve Valkyrie and never have any such head restrictions or feel I have an advantage over non-VR players. I cant just hit a button to look behind as non VR players can or set my Track IR curve to amplify head rotation etc.

In other games your head just goes through the glass, well so what, there's no benefit to doing so, but it means whilst you are inside the experience is a whole lot more natural and more importantly enjoyable.

I wait in hope there is a re think on this unconventional scenario.

IMHO they really should do away with making it a forced setting in Expert. As you say, there is no real advantage there certainly nothing compared to a TIR user.

The only problem is non VR users who have never used VR sees this as a possible advantage over them, which I can understand. If they had tried VR with it, they would see that is really not the case.

100pc agree.

I don't know if it's a factor, but I use a DX racer chair that has a full back / head rest, it's almost impossible to slouch, or have a bad posture. I don't generally have a problem with banging my head, even when looking around, and even on the occasions I do bang my head, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. It doesn't interfere with the way I perceive the virtual world, and it does generally tend to make me more careful to try not to bang my head.

Dev's have done a marvelous job with VR. IL2 has become my go to game, and that's all thanks to the wonderful VR implementation.

If I could put one thing on my wish list it would be to adjust the default head position in some AC, with VR. I love flying the spit, but feel like my eyes are just a little too far back almost level with the back of the seat. I'd like to move them forward about 30 CM's. Found a suggestion that might help me out which I will try tonight.

While I'm here though, I'd just like to say, Thanks Devs !! Keep up the good work !!

Strange, I've had a somewhat opposite experience. Never felt any nausea playing IL2 after many hours where as I would after only a few hours in WT or even Elite Dangerous

103 Hrs 20 Mins in this campaign of TAW all of which has been in VR. Never felt Nausea even once. I put a few hours into other servers too, not to mention the scripted campaigns. This would not be possible for me if it was not enjoyable.

Is there a way to turn off the thump entirely?

I always check my wings if I got hit!

The cockpit restrictions are tight, it is like they end 3cm in front of the glass (FW190, Rift). They could use a bit fixing, so that you can get closer to the glass, but should stay.

What I enjoy since yesterday is that I can play on Ultra/noAA/4xlandscape/noSSAO/noHDR/2.2 SS (SteamVR settings!) now and stay between 45-80fps. The game looks so much better.

I switched back to my 4k 34" screen, but quickly switched back to the Rift. You see more in VR. Identification is not an issue as well - I ID via shape of aircraft. Tracking is much easier, and so is spotting stuff on the ground.

The end of days for flat screens in combat flight sims is near.

It's good it works for you. :-) For me, the moving cockpit envelope is unconventional and spoils the whole VR experience compared to other similar games which can be free to play. The immersion is much more enjoyable in War Thunder, DCS etc without the restriction and that's where I'm spending my money.

It`s near but not here until devices with better resolution appears.

I am mainly SP player and Rift resolution was just too low imho. Too blurry image for my taste so I sold my Rift. Will take a new look when better devices come to the market.

Tested nVidia 3D vision last night, looks much better and works very well compared to before. I'm not sure how it compares to a Rift, but you get full 2560x1440 res on a 27" monitor with great depth rendering - at least for the cockpit. I'll have to mess with settings some more but its really nice now.

Yes currently you can in the settings, but only if playing on Normal or Custom mode. That will turn off the canopy restriction, hence the thump as well.

Expert Mode you can not.

Sounds nice, pretty sure the clarity of the picture is better than Rift.  But my monitor doesn`t support 3D so I can`t test it.

These were precisely my words before I tried Vive and Rift. And dear Lord, was I wrong.

Do you play on the Rift?

Btw, 3D Vision is something entirely different. It's like watching a tiltable 3D picture, when next to it there is a movie running. Of such dimension is the difference.

I owned Rift for couple of months and played quite a lot with it, including BoS.
