Gunner positions and Roomscale VR. Massive opportunity

Perhaps this has already been covered/assessed and discarded as impossible but i really think the gunner positions have real potential for the use of hand controllers and roomscale VR,

the current solution is pretty good... although being locked to the barrel/sight when 'nestled' can be quite uncomfortable from a perception pov.

But i can really see the possibility of using my hand controllers to grab the handles and triggers of a machine gun in the waist or tail of a heinkel and swing it around, moving my whole body about to keep myself aligned with the gunsight...i wonder if this is something that the devs can work towards.. it would be a massive selling point and i would literally spend hours online each night gunning for bomber pilots like that.

Chappyj,

Currently (NOT VR) in the PE2 gunner "belly" positions you can look around the centre fuselage area of the PE2 and see the control rods moving and the radio rack type system on the rear of the front bulkhead etc, the other gun positions and look out over the mainplane/wings.  Are you able to look around this area in VR or are you limited to just looking through gun sights??

when you are not nestled on the gun you can look around freely.(eg 110G2 look down and behind you and see the 37mm feed on reload) there are slight variations in implementation depending on the gun type. is it a turret, is it a pintle etc.

Grabbing a gun with hand controllers can definitely work well - that's how it was implemented in Iron Wolf VR (a submarine lite sim in roomscale VR) and also an old demo of Wolfpack (another subsim that is supposed to have VR when ready). The issue in the case of IL2 is that I still need to have a chair, hotas etc in the play space unless I commit to play only gunner for a whole flight - otherwise I'd have to transition between sitting down for plane control to standing up in another spot for manning the guns - not impossible though assuming the devs would implement a way to guide the player but definitely out of scope for IL2 given that Jason told us that the VR we have now is all we'll get for a long while (mind you I'm a 100% happy with what we got personally. The only thing that makes me sad is not having RoF with the same VR implementation)

agreed.  i would think it would be a tick box or hotkey to swap between seated play and roomscale play.

i just see a great opportunity to offer a discount game pack called IL2: gunners. for like $20 and you don't own planes but can gun for others with really good roomscale implementation it would become its own minigame.

What is this?

Talk of buying a flight sim to not fly planes?

Blasphemy I tell ya!!

i was googling how to play gunners in IL2 VR and got to this. this is the best idea ever. It would make gunning for bombers so much fun!

It is an interesting idea worth exploring. But I don't think the roomscale VR is the requirement here. All that's needed is a chair with a well-padded armrest, so you can support your arm while waving a VR controller in the air. Unless you're a spring chicken (and most flight-sim enthusiasts aren't), the key to a good experience is ergonomics. And as a bonus you can put that VR controller down and grab a joystick next to it, without too much fuss, if you suddenly fancy flying a fighter. That is not easily done in the roomscale VR.

How are people going to react while standing and in the virtual world looking full out a window while the pilot throws the aircraft into a violent bank and your gunner also starts blacking out totally losing all spatial reference?  Either going to fall over, lose lunch, or both.
