NewfieDunfielder Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 (edited) I don't know about some of you but sometimes I like to watch a movie or something to get me in the mood to fly. What's some of your favourite flight combat movies/tv shows. I used to love the old reruns of Black Sheep Squadron when I was a kid. Edited April 13, 2017 by Dunfielder
Finkeren Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 "The Attackers" by Star Media. Horrible replicas and atrocious action sequences, but it's all worth it. You can catch it all on Youtube. 2

Professor1942 Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Tora! Tora! Tora! has always been my favorite WW2 plane film. Which reminds me, I'm due to watch it again. 1

ShoeHash Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 (edited) As a little boy I could name just about every frontline WW2 fighter thanks to a cool micromachine collection. But I'm spacing on what TV I watched.I'd have watched Black Sheep for sure, I want to say there was a show about the Flying Tigers. Of course Flight of the Phoenix (original), The Memphis Belle and the first Tuskegee movie.Too many to list, but apparently, there is a Stephen King movie about a vampire who is a private pilot of high-wing Cessna. Kitted out too, as it has purple curtains so he can suck blood in the back in peace. It's called The Night Flier and you people should be ashamed of yourself for watching it. dburne Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Tora Tora Tora!! I own the BluRay and try to watch at least once a year.
Bearfoot Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Hmmm ... watching a video and then getting it on? I don't actually do that. I either get it on or don't, videos do not enter the picture But I do like watching aviation movies/documentaries/videos 1. Discovery Wings, any and all of them. But I particularly like Wings of the Red Star. Peter Ustinov is the David Attenborough of aircraft documentary narration. 2. YouTube videos of IL2 (or DCS, or BMS, etc.) action. No kidding. Some of these are really good. Really great to help your flying fix when you cannot fly due to travel etc.
Bearfoot Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Should add: love the suggestions on this thread. A lot of memories! Need to re-visit BBS. Here's a related question: which show/movie (non-documentary) has the most authentic depiction of aerial combat of the era? "Tora Tora Tora" and "Battle of Britain" come to mind for me, but only up to a certain extent. It's difficult to assess the maneuvering to see how that works, so that might be OK. But it other respects I think they are definitely severely lacking. One thing that everyone seems to get wrong is the result of taking hits: everyone has the planes exploding in a fireball. While (from watching actual footage) this sometimes happens, more often than not it does. I personally think that IL-2 gets the visuals soooooooooooo right that it is absolutely chilling: from the smoking tracers to the dust and debris clouds as rounds impact to the range of damage, from leaking fuel to flames, to really interesting sequences such as the rounds some important structural components but with no apparent damage and then the target breaking up some moments later. IL-2 gets it right in a way that no movie/show I've seen does it. Anyone have examples of movies/show where they get all this right?
mga Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Les chevalliers du ciel - French movie, the plot is bad, but the flying is fantastic. I would venture to say it's much better movie than Top Gun. One Six Right - Surprisingly good documentary about an airport. 1
Bearfoot Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Les chevalliers du ciel - French movie, the plot is bad, but the flying is fantastic. I would venture to say it's much better movie than Top Gun. "Les chevalliers du ciel " --- oh yeah, this is a great one. Probably the absolute best flying footage I have ever seen, anywhere and anytime. And not CGI, either --- actual Mirages, doing so actual flying, against some actual real landscape. Background on the filming is interesting too -- specially adapted camera in fuel pod of buddy Mirage, special permissions from authorities to sanction so in-close flying, etc. etc. But yes, the plot/story/dialog/etc. are rather embarrassing! I think if you look you can find a supercut of all the flying sequences put to some music which will get you all cream without the dregs!

Feathered_IV Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 It doesn't have any combat... But that's not important right now! 2
CanadaOne Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 It doesn't have any combat... But that's not important right now! They slapped around that female passenger pretty good, that's almost combat... in a United Airlines sort of way.
OP/CRaakucha Posted July 3, 2017 Posted July 3, 2017 Top gun! also, Into The White was good but its doesnt contain air combat that much...
Gambit21 Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 So far Unbroken has the most realistic WWII combat sequence, even though it's brief. I expect Dunkirk to take the prize soon. I saw Iron Eagle at the theater 3 times when it came out...I was a sophomore in high school.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted July 4, 2017 Posted July 4, 2017 So hard to decide between Pearl Harbor or Red Tails. It's like watching big budget documentaries. Oh, jeez I can't even...... 2
