=TBAS=SkyWalker77 Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) In the 109 and 190 I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or whats going on. If I am in a turning dogfight with either on a Mig or Yak even on SP it seems that the bullet drop is such the sight is useless? I If I am not about to fly into them range wise you have to pull the nose so high you cant even see them anymore. It just seems the lead is incredibly excessive. Is this normal? I have never had such a hard time getting hits in a flight sim before. Edited April 12, 2017 by SkyWalker777
[_FLAPS_]Grim Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Totally normal...physics and stuff. The sight aims straigt forward. Becaus you are moving and your target is moving, you have to compensate by leading your aim.In a hard turn it can happen that you have to lead so much in front of the target that your enemy disappears under your nose.
Wulf Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) If you haven't already, try some SP missions with 'aim assist' switched on. That will at least give you a reasonable idea about the lead required in deflection shooting. The only time the graduations on the sight reticule are any use to you is when shooting from a close 6 o'clock position or head to head. And H to H shooting is a 50/50 thing most of the time so avoid it like the Black Death. Edited April 12, 2017 by Wulf
=TBAS=SkyWalker77 Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) Ok I will try that thanks alot! I think it may be the lower firepower of the 109 with only 2 8MM and a 20MM. Used to like P47 with 8 50s or 6 50s in P51 in other sims short bursts and its all over. Seems like the 8MMs dont do a whole lot of damage. Or I am not shooting in the right spot. Is the drop different on the 20mm from the 8mm? Or are they set to match drop? Edited April 12, 2017 by SkyWalker777
Wulf Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) The trajectories of the MG 17s and the Mauser cannon are different. You can set a convergence (harmonization) point for the three weapons, (typically 200-250 meters or so) but at other ranges they will shoot to different points of impact. Also the outboard MGFF cannons on the FW 190s have a different trajectory to the inboard Mauser cannons. Edited April 12, 2017 by Wulf
Solmyr Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) Well each ammo has its own specific ballistic, depending on cartridge aero, mass, and above all muzzle velocity. Then I guess that mass repartition in the cartridge could have a serious impact also, as soon as speed decreases, gravity centre becoming less stable (due to a lack of rotating velocity too) so that the dispersion increases. Then comes the gravity effect too (before a certain point it's really negligeable). All that can be said about weapon perfectly installed and immobilised at a weapon setting field (convergence setting for example). Now think to what air combat aiming is when you mount these weapons on a few tons machine moving in the space @400-500 km/h with vibrations. By the way, don't forget that while you're firing with not loads of kinetic energy, just that firing itself will lead to more vibrations and so instability, possibly even for the flight itself. Speaking of convergence, it can help you a lot of course : but still, merging different kinds of weapons will lead to some sort of disorder in your aiming fine tune and efficiency. And if you're firing at, say 400m, when you set convergence at 300m, might be quite messy. Speaking of messy , historically pilots could ask for a weapons setting so that it coudn't still be called "convergence", but only "setting" to suit their preferences. If I remember well, CloD allows something like that (I didn't fired it since years). But not BoX, where convergence is strict, absolute one. Finally one of the aiming "keys" : don't forget that the more load factor at aiming time, the more you don't only "cross" the air but also "sit in" the air, so that deflexion increases dramatically. Finkeren Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Deflection shooting is mostly a matter of training. Half the time I'm firing blind at a target I can't see.
=TBAS=SkyWalker77 Posted April 12, 2017 Author Posted April 12, 2017 (edited) Thanks for the help guys! I have alot to learn on this game for sure! I tried using the aim help in SP it just shows this game has pretty amazing ballistic modeling I am totally impressed. I guess if I want easy kills I will go back to WWII Fighters lol!
