Cockpits in VR

VR at current res does bring issues, it is even worse than using a 1080p monitor because the pixels are right in your face.  It's not about VR catching up to monitors, it's about reaching a more acceptable standard where the dot pitch is less noticeable.  Even the most ardent supporters of VR acknowledge the resolution is a problem.

I just want to say that there was once a time when 480p @ 24fps was an acceptable standard. Then it became 720p @ 30fps. These days I get a headache at anything under 1080p @ 60fps.

You can't even see the pixels on your current iPhone. There was a time when I thought that was impossible. Nowadays I'd be taken aback if I saw pixels in any handheld display.

Standards change very quickly.

gunners are a little flawed and the bombsite is broken at the moment. Devs are aware AFAIK.

I seem to be unable to move to a gunner position, how is this done? bomber target works ok but is in 2d i assume is a compromise for now.

One thing i'm a little disappointing in is i seem to be restricted in my movements around the plane, its not totally free. Its so great to sit in these planes though its really a wonderful experience.

I think ever increasing resolution is becoming increasingly irrelevant. A monitor that does 4K is more than adequate for most gamers. If you want it higher then it's usually because you want a bigger monitor just to try and get surrounded by the same immersion as VR but , regardless of monitor size, it just doesn't compare. The limitation with VR at present is not so much what VR headset manufacturers can do but more the power to push significant numbers of pixels. Fingers crossed that eye tracking and foviated rendering will resolve that little nut as well as making it feel even more realistic. If VR hmds can double or triple resolution, as a next step without big overheads then no one and I mean no one, as they upgrade, will ever bother gaming on a monitor again regardless of how many K a manufacturer claims it can do. Good enough rather than superlative will be the tipping point.

Exactly my point.  At the moment VR is a great immersive technology that has limitations due to resolution that, making it not a full replacement for a good monitor in gaming just yet.  For me personally once it becomes high enough resolution where I can read the cockpit dials and labels I will never fly a sim on a monitor again.

I just tried the P-40E in VR and most of the dials and labels are unreadable in VR without leaning in etc, even with sharpening on.  On the 4K monitor I could read everything even at minimum zoom.  The threshold is not even close for VR surpassing a good 4k monitor just yet.  Now people who game at 1080p, that's another matter. :)

Yeah, im prob 2 foot from my monitors and I cant read dials well in 2d with trackir but they're easier in VR

1080 obviously :)

Thant's my point.  If you compare a 22"-24" 1080p monitor it is only barely better DP than VR resolution.  My specific comparison is VR vs 4K 32", and at 4K every dial and label in the P-40 is readable at minimum zoom, where VR is a blurry mess by comparison.

I love the immersion of VR but with 4K sharpness on a 32" monitor the clarity is a very big factor.  So for me personally I am not at the VR or nothing stage.  As you said horses for courses but large screen 4k is also one of those, "must try" techs :)

Now I'm off for another stunt flight in VR, see if I can make myself dizzy :)

Only tried the BF-109 F4 and the scale seemed ok to me (Vive). Looking at pictures the width of the cockpit is roughly twice the width of the head and that is what I experience in the cockpit.

The pedals and the flare gun though seem way too big to me.

I posted in another thread that the YAK and virtual character seem 10-20pc too small to me.

Go in game on an airfield and get up and stand on your wing next to your cockpit. Once about a foot away a lo res cockpit and pilot will appear, compare sizes.

Well here's something to consider.

At a certain point you can clearly read your gauges from a reasonable FOV/zoom distance on a good monitor. Let's say that's 4K resolution. But gauge readability is a finite goal for resolution. Once you can read them, you're fine.

But what about something a bit more demanding like spotting? What's the point of "good enough" looking towards an infinite distance? Those of you playing in 4K, do you feel that you're already approaching diminishing returns in resolution, or do you think you'd be able to see even further with even more resolution than you have now? How much further are we talking here? All of this is assuming that the sim is rendering to infinite distances, just to simplify the discussion.

Martin,

What 4K monitor are you running? I need to buy one, but not sure which is the best model.

It depends if you need it for just gaming or wish to do productivity work where IQ is a major factor.  If you are just gaming and web browsing then one of the cheaper 27" 4k TN monitors will be perfectly fine.  If you are using it for work as well then IPS versions will set you back a bit.  I have a Samsung UE3E2850 Freesync 32" IPS screen that for me is perfect for gaming and productivity.

Having tried 4k at 27", 32" and 40" I found 32" to be a sweet spot for size with productivity.  For 32" you will need to set 125% scaling to make text in Windows readable otherwise it's too small.  For 27" it's 150% scaling, while at 40" no scaling is required.

Knowingly that it has been mentioned before...what an amazing work!.  No flat, curved, 4k, oled, led monitor of any size and trackIR  can do it justice.  VR experience in IL2 is mind boggling.  I feel that I have been given my own museum!!  I was reading about the hints on issues in gunner positions...what issues!  The look and if I dare say, the feel is astonishing.  Just watching the recoil on the guns....I am just going to pick my jaw up and leave you at peace.

A big thank you.

PS: Just for information sake,  look into 4k OLED technology too.  No pixel lag!!
