Unlocks

I like that there is a good bit of information about the unlocks already in terms of weight and performance.

I thought it was interesting that you might add an armored windscreen and delete an armored headrest in the 109.

Looking forward to doing some rocket attacks in the LaGG. It should be good at that.

yeah i really like the direction those unlocks are going. I would hope that the armored headrest removal would also make your pilot more vulnerable to fire. but who knows at this point

I like the actual field modification unlocking but I'm not a huge fan of making bombs and rockets unlockables.

It just feels really arcadish and could lead to some silly stuff in career mode like doing first few IL-2 missions with guns only. Also the list of field mods is either gonna get really crowded with different bomb loads or we are going to get really few different load outs when it comes to bombers and ground assault aircraft

It's not like they had many choice during the war, thought I can imagine a pilot...

It's not about lots of fancy special munitions. In IL-2 1946 4.12 Pe-12 has 8 different bomb loadouts and that's only from different combinations of basic general purpose bombs. if you start adding in even basic special purpose bombs the number of loadouts can climb up fast (1946 example: B-25 has general purpose bomb combinations plus parafrags so it has 14 different loadouts).

I just can't see how unlocking basic bomb loadouts is going to work.

Probably differently for bombers!  I don't think this is meant to be about standard armaments.

Yeah the unlocking system doesn't make much sense to me either, and I can only see it creating problems for MP.

Restricting the bombloads and mods players have access to in SP campaign makes sense if its based on when these things were historically available. But it seems like BoS is using an RPG xp system where you have to grind to unlock stuff, which is very disappointing.

I like unlocking feature, makes you feel to achieve more than just kills. Sims need to evolve eventually and realistic unlocking system is pretty cool. Is it more gamish? - Yeah but I think a lot of people are going to enjoy it.

Grind to unlock? So flying campaign and making progress is apparently grinding.

Yes, some people don't care at all about SP and will/have bought this game for the online MP component. Now they will have to play an SP campaign in order to get bombloads and weapon loadouts for online. What else to call it but forcing the player to grind in order to unlock stuff that should be available to everyone from the get go?

And how is this realistic at all?

I'm sure Call of Duty kiddies will love it and maybe 777 can even add a golden 109 skin for getting 1000 kills just to keep the attention of children? But for anyone who has played flight sims besides WT/WoWP, this seems like a regression of the genre. XP has no place in these flight sims.

The funny thing is Microsoft tried to do the similar system of XP to unlock stuff with MS Flight and look at how that turned out.

While I'm not necesarilly a fan of unlocks in a simulator, I have to admit, that it does create some incentive for me regardless. As long as all unlocks are historically accurate and verifiable, I don't have a problem.

It worked alright in Red Orchestra 2, I don't see, why it couldn't work in BoS.

As an online flyer I have zero interest in unlocks. As the devs won't drop the idea my greatest wish is I can just start an offline mission, put it on autopilot and go and do something, anything, else and just let the game get it over with, and come back later to find things unlocked. Waste of my valuable sim time.

For offline I suppose it could keep things interesting for someone flying a career, for me as an online squad flyer its an irritating inconvenience, that will get in the way of how I want to fly BoS.

exactly here a little problem with not really historically correct VYA and rockets for s29, especially, at period in game (mid. november'42 - early february'43), but looks like we have first or last explanation from LOFT - "And you'll surely get plenty of bonuses and achievements. Note that all of them have been designed for adult players, so they are generally created based on real-life historical prototypes."

well, what we can more wait? :)

but personally i really hope what will be more, including docs, and at this moment i think what VYA-23 it's like SH-37, which was historically correct as separate plane and "was mounted instead shvak on s29 easy" (с) Viks (or something like this)...

I have been reading "Zero", and there is actually a pretty significant discussion about unlocks.. sort of.  There was a lot of discussion made about increasing the range of the aircraft via learning about engine management and the training leading up to Pearl Harbor.  Apparently the guys who dropped those main gun rounds disguised as bombs and torpedoes modified to run shallow had special training to do it - I don't think those tools were available to everyone out of the box, and in Zero, much is made of the drain of experienced pilots and green replacements who lacked their skills.  We also know Galland had some 'unlocks' of his own.

I'm not opposed to unlocks that work like that and I'm content to see how this works out.

The comparison to Flight is probably a little unfair, because there it was the prod to keep players moving.  What really seems to have killed Flight was people wanting Flight Simulator XI and getting Flight, and then being annoyed over lack of controls and expecting to fly 1st person. Also, being abandoned didn't help.
