Guest deleted@50488 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Tired of fighting with myself about the use I give to IL-2, ending up using it not as a showcase of what an advanced flight and overall physics modelling engine can be, making it the best I have ever used ( at least in as far as the types of modeled aircraft go ), but rather as a "shooting game"... I decided to try a new approach... I would like to paint my aircraft in yellow, with the words "NO SHOOTING!". Then in online sessions I will mostly try to follow other aircraft, either team, involved or not in air duels. Main objective is getting on their tails and trying to do formation flight, the closer I can, leaving when opponents start shooting to avoid being hit, and making sure I load my aircraft with absolutely ZERO ammunition to not even fall in the temptation of shooting at anything.... Hehe... I just have to find out how to create "Skins" in IL-2 :-) but I guess I'll easily find a few tutorials around here ( ? ) Question: will such a skin be "exported" and visible to other players in an online session ? HagarTheHorrible Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 I'm hoping VR will be a big boon to formation flying.
Guest deleted@50488 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 Yes, I'm sure VR will probably be great, but I do not plan to use it. Actually I even dropped TIR5 because it has a severe incompatibility with my ELITE hardware... Just the keyboard and collie hat for paning around in my virtual flights... Well, not being able to make a skin visible to others in online sessions will somehow limit my chances of really not getting shot very easily :-) Will think about some alternative, including flying with all of my available lighting ON .. or using smokes ( ? )

HagarTheHorrible Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 I always thought TrackIr did that already! Yes, you're right, but depth perception and spatial awareness should help enormously and may make formation flying more natural and fun rather than just the hard slogg it is without those aids. 1

In that other flight sim the aerobatic server is always pretty populated and you get loads of expert pilots and rubbish pilots doing formation flying or learning to do formation flying. I'm surprised it's not a thing in Il2 because part of being good at gunnery is being good at just flying and sometimes it's more fun to learn with other players once you have the basics. I got caught up as lead of a formation by accident in that other game. I think the other players were on comms and I was not because I had been watching them do near perfect loops in formation, etc. I took the free frogfoot up as I'd only used it once or twice and hadn't even set the controls up properly for this aircraft so everything was awkward to control and then at random these 3 expert players formed up in a perfect formation behind me and I'm sitting at my computer frozen thinking 'what the heck do I do now!'. "I can't type because I'll crash". Eventually I made an excuse and logged out (ran away). I didn't want to end up in a screenshot thread on a forum as that guy and I had no idea where I was supposed to go or whether they were expecting me do some interesting maneuvers so they could practice following. Guest deleted@50488 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 I know what you mean BFBunny :-) But in IL-2 there are also a couple of aerobatic servers available, I believe.
Thad Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 Pilots that need to fly in formation are wooses. Lone wolves are real fighter pilots. Everybody knows that.
seafireliv Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) Pilots that need to fly in formation are wooses. Lone wolves are real fighter pilots. Everybody knows that. I still remember the time I was flying in formation with my squad, and at some point we got separated. I found my squad again flying ahead of me. I informed them i was joining back in formation, but they still couldn`t see me. i settled in at the back then realised to my shock they were 4 enemy 109s! Guess they were so concentrating on their formation they didn`t notice me. Fun times. You can`t get that Offline. Edited April 8, 2017 by seafireliv 3
Nil Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 (edited) When I want to fly in formation peacefully, I go to the 72 training server and fly in the most south east area Edited April 8, 2017 by 1./TG1_Nil
1./KG4_Blackwolf Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 Bomber pilots train to fly in formation while we train to do other things. We always fly together, we have too..to live. You can make a skin but everyone on the server has to download it for it to show..I think is how it goes.
Gambit21 Posted April 8, 2017 Posted April 8, 2017 Fun times. You can`t get that Offline. Indeed you cannot. On the other hand, offline you're not likely to see a message from you wing-man that his cat just ran across his keyboard, or that his kids just woke up so he has to leave.

You been following me around? Had the cat jump on my keyboard the other day- Right in the middle of a session. Shoved her out the room- that got me so..... mad.

=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted April 9, 2017 Posted April 9, 2017 its a online game..If you use a skin that has big letters "Please dont shoot - Filming or press)this will make you get shot more and by both teams . 1

I would certainly be tempted to shoot if I found him on my wing with lights and smoke on, jeez.... Get on TeamSpeak and fly in formation with a group like a normal person.

Get on TeamSpeak and fly in formation with a group like a normal person. That would be too "normal" for me :-) You see, talking to others while flying is the kind of thing I hate to do IRL... This is a Game - idea is exactly following someone picked at random ...

This is a Game - idea is exactly following someone picked at random ... That's fair, TeamSpeak isn't for everyone. But following someone with lights on is pretty rude and will make them a target. If you want to do this, just omit the lights and smoke so you don't draw attention to the person you're following. That way I'm sure nobody will mind. 2

This is a Game - idea is exactly following someone picked at random ... Heck, one of the things I loved the most was when i was able to communicate with others while trying to achieve a military objective. Infact I had to tone down how much I talked! It just adds extra immersion to a game. And no, not talking to anyone is not what playing an online game is about, you got that backwards. Communication is key to winning. You ever wonder why two enemies run around you and your 3 mates? Comms.

seafireliv Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 (edited) You shot them down right? And no you can't get that offline. haha. I wish. I was still pretty new and instead of just opening fire I tried telling the rest of my squad where the enemy were. Of course while doing that one of them saw me (or maybe heard my aircraft) and the whole staffel exploded in a panic. I was too slow to shoot anyone down and they overwhelmed and shot me down. I would`ve loved to hear their comments at the time. A lone Russian plane flying in formation with 4 109s! Edited April 10, 2017 by seafireliv

I was flying my A-10 on Blue Flag, and I was on my way back to get some more stuff to make stuff go boom. My escort flew into a mountain so I was alone. On the way I found an enemy fighter cruising slowly at a fairly low altitude. I already dispensed my air-to-air missiles on some helicopter and shot all my rounds at vehicles, so I just awkwardly flew under his tail for some time until backup arrived, hoping he wouldn't spot me.
