PeterBrowne Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) About to splurge on a rig for an Ultrawide 3440x1440, in particular the Samsung C34F791WQE 34in Ultra Wide Curved Quantum Dot Monitor So I'm seeking recommendations for hardware for high graphics settings for highest frame rate for CoD/BoS. Thinking about: Intel Core i7 7700K (OC liquid cooled) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition 11GB Perhaps something like https://www.pccasegear.com/products/38260/pccg-evolv-1080-ti-gaming-system-galaxy-silver Overkill?? What would be the ideal configuration for that resolution with high(est) settings? Peter Edited April 5, 2017 by PeterBrowne
sinned Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I discourage wide landscape view. I used to use 5k x 1k 3 monitor set up. Bomb sight is truncated, gui not readable, and fish eye effect is too great. I turned all my monitors to portrait and it is so much better. All above problems are gone, and higher frame rates is a plus. Also you can read gauges wo turning head. Dont fall into wide landscape trap.
PeterBrowne Posted April 5, 2017 Author Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) Thanks for your opinion Sinned. These videos look OK to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyDVvmRXkVM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1LygTToGwQ&t=138s I'd be interested to know if CoD/BoS supports 21:9 natively or if there is stretching/extrapolation happening. Felefun Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 I'm running a ROG SWIFT PG348Q in 3440x1440 @100Hz. Ultrawide works great in IL-2 in my experience There's a small amount of streching towards the outer limits of the screen, but it's not really noticeble in practical use. No issues with the GUI what so ever. Im running this with an i7 6700k and gtx1080, and my FPS rarely drops below 100 with everything maxed out. So would say that the hardware you're thinking about would be somewhat of an overkill for this sim right now
Dakpilot Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Every time I did not do "overkill" I regretted it later.... every single time Cheers Dakpilot 2
Felefun Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Dakpilot has a good point! I also have to add that after getting my Rift, the ultrawide doesn't get much playtime in flight sims anymore. So if you're considering buying a new ultrawide especially for simming, I would highly recommend going the VR-route instead. 1
=TBAS=Sshadow14 Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 ALWAYS TRY TO RUN ULTRA..Little to no point using high preset with such resolution (can't even see 4K skins unless on ultra preset)Anything over 60 fps is fine :D
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) I highly recommended wide landscape view, you see more than others who has 16:9 because those 3440x1440 monitors have 21:9 proportions. This hardware what you mentioned is enough to match fps with monitor refresh rate at least. Edited April 5, 2017 by 307_Tomcat
Gambit21 Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 You'll see even more if the monitor wraps around you 180 degrees...the point is that this isn't ideal for all.

Peter Salutations, In my experience through the years.... there is no such thing as 'overkill' when it comes to personal computer systems.
Gambit21 Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 (edited) On overkill - agreed... but you can spend too much on hardware that won't end up penciling out for you in a year. I'll give you an example. Right now the 1080Ti is a poor investment for many (including me) with 4K monitors given it's high cost and relative performance at this juncture. It's still not powerful enough to run most games at full-tilt-boogie at 4K, and is pegged at 100% for some games even at 1440p. For that amount of money, I want overhead, I want power to spare... it's just not worth it since it's still begging to be upgraded...unless you have crazy amounts of disposable income and $700 for a GPU is no big deal no will purchasing an upgrade next when the next round hits. Better to get a 1080, turn some settings down and/or live with some lower FPS than you fantasize about, and bide your time until the next generation of cards where you'll be running higher resolutions with better frame rates and more overhead. That's what I did anyway. In 18 months I'll be grateful that I didn't get the 1080Ti as I look to apply those few hundreds of dollars toward an Volta 1180, or 1180Ti or whatever the naming convention is at that time. I expect the jump in performance will be significant. Where at a point right now where for many people being a bit patient will pay off soon enough. If I was a 1080p gamer, or even 1440, the 1080Ti would make more sense as a longer lived card....but really it's a horrible time to drop $700 on a GPU. Edited April 5, 2017 by Gambit21

Dakpilot Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Nope..buy the 1080i but only IF you can afford it It is never a good idea to drop 700 dollars on anything, but you are not spending 700 only adding 200 to the cost of a 1080, that 200 dollars over an 18 month period is less than a coffee a week, and in 18 months the 1080Ti will have more resale value and be more relevant if you choose to upgrade then EVERY time I wait 18 months playing at lower settings or getting the odd frame drop waiting for the new better thing I kick myself, better performance/price value rarely comes along, however the 1080Ti is currently now one of those times When I bought my 970 it was the best value card, I was very happy with performance and at my "sensible" purchase, but 18 month later I really wish I had had those 18 months with a 980Ti which I could at the time have just afforded If 200 dollars over 18 -24 months period stops food on the table or paying bills or will lead to divorce/similar then the 1080/1070/1060 will do just fine Cheers Dakpilot

Jade_Monkey Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Go overkill and go ultrawide. You wont regret it. I just went into a single 1080ti and it just runs smooth like butter.
Ypsan Posted May 5, 2017 Posted May 5, 2017 Reading this while driving to store to pick up 1080ti and asus ultra wide monitor. Looks like Im making the right decision. See you all in the skies tonight!
