So you are playing the most realistic SIM but you wanna keep the old commodities?

Do you also play maybe with a gamepad ?

That's a completely disingenuous characterization of his meaning.

I have no desire for VR at this point either.

His post isn't worthy of a response.

Bugger VR like that i game because mostly i am lazy dont want to have to turn my head all the time..
(Seriously tho, having to do head checks is a great way to hurt your neck and back)

Heck its bad enough have to use Hands and feet already

Not to mention still needing to physically interact with ones joystick and throttle buttons and the keyboard. To the best of my knowledge problematic with any current VR headsets on. I'm interested but skeptical while watching developments.

This.

And... how would you find and grab your favorite beverage with that VR gear on?

:drinks:

VR is just a heck of a lot of money for something that still seems very niche. Trackir5 is a far cheaper option and does a pretty fine job.

There`s this same option in Elite\dangerous too to the point that TrackIR is quite limited compared and it`s usually a small minority that screams out whenever someone criticises the effort put on VR coding.

I suspect there`s more to this than just making VR for the User because it`s `cool`. not that i don`t like the idea of it, it`s just a lot of work and I doubt I and many other will be getting it any time soon while the price is as high as it is.

I'm not yet ready to jump into the VR fold but a lot of effort is going to wards VR/AR implementations both in entertainment fields as well as research. Its not quite something I'm ready to jump into yet but maybe in a few years. Who knows!

Right now its a checkmark item that helps bring some folks onboard so I'm all for that. Also cool that flight sims are making the jump and putting in high fidelity gameplay experiences with VR rather than a demo-type game that we've seen elsewhere.

I'm glad their working on VR, it's a wise move from an 'increase the user-base' standpoint.

The more users, the more development we get and the longer-lived the product is.

It's a good thing for all of us, even if we have no interest in it ourselves.

I personally won't even be tempted until years from now when it's quite a ways beyond it's current state.

Do snap views work with Track IR? If so, they'll work with VR, I'm sure.

No snap views, no zoom in VR. When one gets used to the lack of gamey aids the game becomes a simulator in VR. Edited by Rolling_Thunder

Hello there

For me, VR support is essential.

Im currently playing Bos/BoM at 6400x1080 with track ir but actually prefer War Thunder in VR due to the sheer immersion.

However, i find WTs gameplay etc lack lustre whilst i adore BoX's wonderful scope.

Indeed, im so excited for BoX's VR support ive splashed out on a set of crosswond pedals.

Ill be gutted if VR support is dropped/back burnered.

Once one tries VR its often difficult to go back.

Just imho.

I think there are no worries. Sounds like VR was a serious item on their list. It may fall back in priority but hopefully that initial experience is good enough to keep it going through future updates and I'm sure there will be lots of tweaks and adjustments to make. Still... the word from that beta tester about how good they thought it was is encouraging!

When the VR patch arives, I can finely begin to play this sim. I have testet a littel bitt, to learn the Controls, but I unfortantly can no longer play sims without VR. Its an entyrly New world and im so spoild by this, that normal gaming is almost imposible.

I cant wayt :D

I feel the same way. VR is the only way I sim now for space, flight and racing games. If a new sim doesn't have a vr option I will not buy it. I am revisiting warthunder and playing the crap out of it so I can get it out of my system for once the IL2 patch arrives. This sim is the best out there so it's hard to go back to warthunder after playing IL2. I can't wait to see the beautiful cockpits of this game in glorious VR. And I hope someday soon they will release a sequel to ROF with VR. I would be in heaven since it's my favorite flight era.

Zoom is in. If you want to use it. As of yesterday's comments by Jason.

I can neither confirm nor deny the Zoom is in. But Zoom away!

Tried out VR yesterday for the first time, a friend borrowed me the rift. So I'l share for those that yet have not. As a side note, I use Tir and have it working very well.

Downloaded dcs (never played that game before) and whoa! The feeling of "there" truly is amazing. When maneuvering, inverted at the top of a loop, looking up (down at the airfield 2 km below you) your stomach is sliding up your throat. In a good way. The cockpit in 3D looks absolutely real. It's suddenly your cozy office and you feel like reaching out and touching all those levers and buttons. It's no longer just an obstructive 2d frame your constantly fighting for better visibility. For me, this feeling of "there" alone makes it worth getting one.

For that other part; resolution is pathetic. Suprisingly, even the games made for the rift can't seem to overcome this. At times it's enough and everything looks great, but quite often I find myself adjusting the headset position in the hopes of a sharper image. I could see the dials in the dcs cockpit but could not even remotely read the labels on each.

Very excited about the upcoming il2 vr-support now. Can't stand flying low level over what looks like low res satellite images blended with out of scale normal maps in dcs. Suspecting il-2 will look incredible in that regard. If the zoom works in VR, It actually may be possible for me to play somewhat competitively online. The amazing feeling of "there" would be well worth the extra difficulty spotting and identifying targets, I hope. We'll see.

How magical, quite frankly I'm getting a little bit tired of all this Harry Potter themed promotional stuff. They might be fine for a game of Quidich but simming, really ? :-)

In DCS there's quite a lot you can do to improve the sharpness. Firstly, by default IIRC you don't get the high-resolution cockpit textures in VR, makes a big difference. The other thing is the "pixel density" setting. It requires some good hardware, but if you can turn it up a bit (1.5 is great but even 1.2 makes a difference) then things become a lot sharper.

That said VR is not currently the same resolution as a monitor, no matter what you do. For me the immersion is worth the loss of resolution. But then I fly first and foremost because I love flying, not because I want to be competitive. Although I found you can be competitive with it, when I was flying regularly I ranked in the top 20 on the most popular DCS server. What you lose in resolution you gain in spatial awareness ...

Tomsk. Your right I am being unfair towards dcs. This was a quick test I did and didn't spend much time tweaking graphics settings.

Good to hear you did that well online with VR. Perhaps wording my ambitions with online VR playing as "competitive" is wrong. I guess that sounds as if I prioritize ranking and stats over immersion. I blame my English.

What I'm after is to have a fighting chance of shooting something down rather than always have someone behind me because I never saw them coming. Even with a high res monitor I'm a mediocre pilot at best. And I only play online because I get so much more nervous immersion out of the game flying with or against thinking humans rather than AI. Same goes for labels, I consider identifying targets a part of dogfighting. While flying with those, kills much immersion for me.

Hoping for the best now.

Indeed.

I currently fly DCS with a Pixel Density of 1.6, and it certainly looks better than the default of 1.0.

When I realized ASW for the Rift worked pretty well, instead of trying to stay closer to 90 fps I cranked up my graphics higher and that helped as well.

Very anxious to see what PD I can run BOS , I know when I was getting my controls set up on Saturday I was getting over 150 fps on my monitor.

The spatial awareness as you say is very good.  The feeling of being there is just incredible to me.

Very anxious to see the cockpit of the Yak-1 in all it's glory.

Pretty excited for this update.  The graphics refinements will be a huge boost to a cloud hugging ground pounder like me.  :)

Really happy for the VR crowd too, although it will be a couple of generations  yet before I get on board with that.

To anyone saying trackir is a better solution than VR, is only because you haven't tried total immersion obviously. After playing Warthunder in total immersion, it is very hard to WANT to go back to 2d graphics. Yes it has its flaws, like not being able to see planes passed 5k or so, but it totally makes up for it when you engage into a fight. Now before anyone tries to beat me up on this post, I do use track it, have 3 40" TV's and gtx980 to pushing. I have a really good setup for flight sims. I have played like this for years, trying to get the best immersion I could while flying, yet NOTHING and I mean NOTHING compares to flying in VR. Just my $.02

Honestly, I value my 4K resolution and not having to twist my neck Linda Blair-style to check my six.

Immersion to me comes more from having realistic scenarios and AI as well as RPGing a character (more applicable in other types of games) not so much out of a sense of physically "being there", because that illusion is so fragile, that it takes almost nothing to pull you out of it.

VR might reach a point, where it offers something out-of-this-world amazing and is a must-have, but for now I'm sticking to my 4K screen and trackIR.

Totally respect that. I have just always wanted a "holodeck" type style gameplay, and I think that's where for me the rift does so we'll. To actually be inside the cockpit of a 109 and actually want to flip the toggles and switch in front of you because you think they are right there is crazy lol. My next step will be a 720 degree full motion Sim. After that, I'm sure all I'll need is a fan blowing in my face lol.

You mean like the real pilots had to do? Speaking of immersion...

LOL

J/K, certainly understand where you are coming from!

I'm strongly curious to see how both 1CGS and VR manufacturers will get us rid of the human-machine interface problem, for such a complex thing like BoX. I'm a MS FFB2 user, I have only a few buttons, but load of key combinations and all.. How can I press all those keys if I don't see them ? How could I see them without completely brake the beloved immersion feeling ? Will developpers eventually make the cockpit clickable ? (It looks like the only one solution to me..)

Get a throttle with plenty of buttons.

On my Rhino X-55 Hotas, I have slightly more buttons than I need. I've never had to look down at my Hotas and the only time I have to look down at my keyboard for the 1 or 2 buttons I still have bound there, it's just so I can hit those combinations faster, but I could hit them without vision.

I just ordered a second FFB2 a few days ago only to be sure I could keep flying with "in case of", like pplenty of FFB2 owners/users do. But it has very few buttons. Maybe I'll buy an additional console or something when I'm the happy owner of a nice VR solution, so not soon.

I will say this:

A throttle is a very low use item in flight. It can easily be replaced with a throttle step option using the keyboard, for sure.

BUT, the buttons the throttle comes with are invaluable. I'm glad I got a HOTAS instead of just a joystick.

I hope you have the same experience when you're able to get a separate throttle unit!

That is tough. I am lucky in that regard as I have used a Warthog HOTAS for a number of years and put all my most used commands on buttons/hats. I never really need to get to the keyboard.

The Rift does have a small gap below the nose one can peer out of, but reaching out and actually touching the right key is rather difficult.
