Thad Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) Salutations, Other than looking cool in the game... what strategic or tactical use are paratroop drops. I remember reading something about them being able to do repairs. No details remembered. Do they count towards occupying or capturing a 'flag' city? In other words, once on the ground, currently what use are they and are they targetable? Edited April 1, 2017 by Thad
coconut Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) No direct use, it's all up to you. Typically you count how many have landed alive, and then it's up to you to activate things. I made a mission where they activate machine gun positions, see https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_id=28550 A word of warning, though: the logic I've used for the machine gun activation is pretty complex, but you can certainly build something simpler that is still fun. The complexity in my mission stems from the fact that I have three lines of machine guns simulating the advance of the troopers. Edited April 1, 2017 by coconut
Thad Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) Ah..I see, that is reasonable. One could activate AAA gun batteries or ATGs etc. Thanks for the mission example. Edited April 1, 2017 by Thad
No601_Swallow Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Or you could switch airfields' allegiances, move front lines, trigger AI ground exchanges, etc, etc. The point is, when the Ju52 was added to the game, they also added detection of troop drops, cargo drops and - I think - cargo unloading to the complex trigger MCU. Then its just up to you! For instance, I'm in the middle of an attempt at a completely unhistorical scripted campaign, and mission 8 (probably) will involve dropping supplies from a commandeered Ju52 to partisans who've taken over the citadel in the centre of Velieke Luki (obviously the campaign's intended to be a fictional Boy's Own-type romp)! 1
Gambit21 Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 Yes they're quite useful - even from a mission scenery standpoint.

coconut Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 If only they had added proper logging for those events too... It would be nice, but it's not a show-stopper. What I'm doing on my server is that whenever I need to log something the game does not naturally log, I destroy some fake object with a specially chosen name.

Yeah, that's what we do too, but like you might know, we would like to keep everything in the mission side as light as possible. If we had proper logging, we wouldn't need to use complex triggers and fake blocks.
