Most of us who already have, or have tried a VR device will, I'm sure, have tried other flight sims.  One of the options that you will have been presented with is whether you want a representation of your (when I say "your" I obviously mean "a") body in the sim.  Does it matter ?  Is it important ?  Have you not even thought about it or given it the slightest consideration ( If you haven't go and spend ten minutes trying that, or those, flight sims with the body both absent or present and see which option you prefer, if any).

I don't know what 777's thoughts are on the subject, but i was wondering, given that animated crew members are already present in the aircraft, whether the lack of a player avatars body will continue with the future inclusion of VR and, if it did, would it make any difference ?

To me it completes the illusion when you look down and see a body...not a must have but its a little "trippy" not to see your body in game.

In DCS the body is slightly too far forward and up from neutral head position. When looking down it gives me feeling of choking at the throat because of it, every time. Therefore I always turn it off.

Been discussed a trillion times before, and the answer is still No.

In the context of VR ?

Anyway, no sweat, don't both replying, I get the message.

Body can add to the sense of presence, that's for sure. Take Elite Dangerous, my throttle and stick are physically located around the same place as they are in game, and therefore it really feels like the ingame visual representation of my arms and what they're doing and my perception of my real arms are in sync, and when that happens there is little extra something that clicks in my brain and makes me feel a bit more as if I was really in that spaceship cockpit. B

But then it's not a big deal when the body is not there to be honest. Many VR games have just floating hands, and that can help, but in the case of a flight sim just seeing the controls move as you expect them gives a bit of that illusion that your body is in there even though you don't see it.

The issue with a body in the cockpit is that it occludes things. You can't move your virtual legs to check the flaps limiter for example. It has some drawbacks, and it's not a feature I think is hugely important. Although I would probably still enable pilot body in VR for immersion myself.

Let's hope we can make a mod for it once we get mods enabled;-p

Sounds good to me.

I don't even enable the pilot body in DCS, figure anythign I can do to help performance is good.

like TunaEatsLion I can not cope with pilot body in DCS or in WarThunder, because if it is not perfectly fitted with your body, it creates some dizziness...And the body often hides parts of cockpit. So No...

Call me odd but I got a laugh out of the butt hole they modeled in WT that was supposed to be where your neck is. A poorly rendered pucker between your shoulders.

My 2c (or, if it has been discussed a trillion times, then let's make it a trillion and 1, in which case it is my 1/(10^12+1) worth) ...

It is creepy how your brain identifies with the VR body, even if your real-world, e.g. arm positions don't match. And it definitely adds to the immersion factor when they match up even loosely --- I have a center-mounted stick, etc. so that helps a lot.

Having said that, from a more practical standpoint, in some aircraft controls are DEFINITELY blocked, which makes them non-workable without a lot of hassle (e.g., radar controls on F-5E, radio controls in the Gazelle, etc.). This can be alleviated somewhat by judicious HOTAS mapping, but the problem is still fundamental.

At the end of the day, for me, the loss of immersion without the body is a smaller problem than the loss of functionality due to the controls blocking, so in a/c where this is an issue, I fly without the body on. Or, if the controls are required only in certain phases (e.g., start-up, I have the body off for that phase and then switch it on again).

Either way, I think the best option is to make things optional and easily toggle-able in-game.

I never missed a pilot body when flying on a monitor, but I always use it when possible in VR. It really feels "right" to see your hands and legs, even though the may look different than in reality. The body does not occulde much and it can be hidden in other sims with a button, so you can glance on that flaps indicator if you really need it.

Ah well, the VR implementation in Il-2 is great already, good job guys  :salute:
