DD_Arthur Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 At last, after years of waiting, it would appear that superfast fibre broadband is now available in my small corner of rural England. Obviously I'm faced with a great deal of choices now and I'd like to get this right first time soooooo.....who do you use and what have your experiences been? Any advice gratefully received
[SRH]Festa_VR_Noob Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Virgin Media for me. I got 70 down and 3up, along with TV and phone for £46 month. It`s crept up lately, and I could probably phone and complain and get a better deal, but hey-ho. Their superhubs can be crappy, but after some router setting changes you can get them a little more stable. I stick with them as I find Sky/BT etc have usage caps or speeds that aren`t as fast or stable, but each area I would imagine to be different and not one provider would suit everyone. Best speaking to people in your street or general area.

Everyone else will rely on your copper cable connecting to the fibre cabinet. BT should be second fastest, I'm getting 45.48 Mb/s from them currently. Point to remember though is that you will always get different download speeds depending on how far you live from the fibre cabinet, and even time of day will change your results. Cheers, Bombzey
BOO Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 Originally Sky Broadband - very unreliable connection and constantly onto customer services doing the same ole same ole and having the buck passed between sky and BT. Now on sky fibre unlimited. paying through the nose but 78-82 down and 16-20 up consistently. no outages in 12 months of use. I'm in Lincoln.
AndyJWest Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 From personal experience, I'd say avoid BT if you can.
Bombzey Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I'm getting 71.70Mb/s down and 18.95Mb/s up with BT on my desktop which if fine for IL-2 It really is specific to your area so as said above best to ask your neighbours
DD_Arthur Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 It really is specific to your area so as said above best to ask your neighbours I would imagine my neighbours will be asking me soon. Those clever people from Openreach shoved their cable down the road nearly twelve months ago. The cabinet appeared two weeks ago. We're ready to go. It's how you rate the service from your ISP's that I'm interested in. So info about superhubs and buck passing is the sort of stuff I'm after .
[SRH]Festa_VR_Noob Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 With virgin, you`re more than likely going to get a SH3. I think i have the SH1, which gives me a few issues, but nothing a restart won`t cure and i probably do this every 6 months or so. I`ve had my current router about 6 years. WiFi is pretty stable and works right through in a three bedroom house built in the 30's. Built-in firewall is awful and recommend disabling it. I`m pretty close to the cabinet though, so i get full power every time i test it (unless there`s an issue they`ve anounced), so maybe I`m lucky.
