Good morning,

I'm a month away from an upgrade to my CPU, and am using an older E6700 dual core 2.66Ghz cpu with 4GB RAM and a GTX950 2GB RAM. All in all, and surprisingly, not a bad rig in some ways. I'm going to upgrade to an i3-6100/8GB RAM at least.

My question: is it worth getting IL2 BOS or BOK now and having what fun I can with it until the upgrade, or is it unrealistic to run it at all on my present rig. I would be happy just to fly one plane around and see the sights. Also, can I re-install after my upgrade?

Thanks.

I think the CPU might struggle a bit, but why not give it a shot if you will be upgrading shortly anyways? Especially if you want to get BoX anyways after the upgrade. Worst case you will have to wait a bit, but best case is you can jump right in and play:)

And to answer your second question, yes, there is no issue with reinstalling BoS - you can install it on multiple PCs if you like, though you can only log in to one at a time. If you've already set up your controls, make a copy of the  ...IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\input folder from the old install, and copy it to the new one.

Thank you for the responses. I think I will grab BOS or BOM prior to the upgrade. I've been watching some youtube videos and those cockpits are very nice.

Let us know how it goes! Nice cockpits, and very detailed simulations. It feels better than any other sim I ever tried.

See you in the skies!

Best,

Howdy,

I have to admit, I am looking forward to it.

In case you are interested from a tech point of view, my E6700/4GB RAM/GTX 950 runs the Rise of Flight demo well at close to max sliders at 1080p, as long as there isn't much action going on. It also runs DCS World at max sliders, including 1024 cockpit res, at 1080P as long as there is nothing(!) else going on. I wouldn't be surprised if it runs BOS very well with just the one plane in the air. No question the GPU is carrying a lot of the weight.

Just FYI, I've been flying flightsims since Falcon 3, but I gave my game rig to my kid a while back and am just getting back into flying. I still have the bug.

on heavy MP server that CPU will not handle it

Less than 3.5ghz intel or amd is asking for trouble.

Biggest thing is you would get better performance with a GTX 770 than that 950 as the 950 will surely be bottle necking the CPU under load.

100% cpu usage and like 60% GPU usage is never a good thing..

Morning,

I hear ya. If I had the cash I'd jump right to a i5 6600 and a 1070, but life and kids limit my extravagances. For the moment I am happy with my old CPU and good video card. In a month perhaps, I can get an i3 on a good MB with 8GB RAM and up that to an i5 and another 8GB RAM during the summer when work is in full gear. By fall I can up to a fancy new video card.

In the meantime, I'll fly what I can.

I strongly recommend a quad core cpu, dual core cpu's went completely obsolete for gaming about 6-7 years ago and were low end for a few years prior to that. I'm not sure an I3 even meets the minimum system specs for BoS. The I3 is a pointless product that shouldn't exist tbh. As such, I strongly recommend an I5 or waiting a couple weeks for a Ryzen R5. Both can be had at under the $200 mark and will offer years of reasonable performance vs being obsolete 6 years ago. If you are on an extremely tight budget and cannot afford to spend over $100 US on a CPU, get an I5 second hand, plenty of them are out there.

Edit: Checked specs, requirements are as follows:

Minimum system requirements
  • OS: 64-bit Windows® 7 (SP1) / Windows® 8 / Windows® 10
  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i5/i7 2.8 ГГц
  • GPU: GeForce GTX 660/Radeon HD 7770 with 2GB VRAM or better
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • RAM: 4 Gb+
  • Sound Card: DirectX®-compatible
  • Storage space: 10 Gb+
  • Internet connection: 256Kb/s for single-player campaign, 1Mb/s and faster for multi-player
  • DirectX® compatible flight stick is recommended

10/10 don't buy an i3.

It may save you money in the short term but it is a poor investment - save up and get an i5 at the very least.

i3? Noo. You did this? Get an I5 at least! Even without hyper threading of an I7 an I5 desktop CPU is a pretty good for the money. If you have the money buy an i7 though.

Yeah I agree. Get at least an i5. This is a CPU hungry game.

A good tip in general is to buy a CPU that will last a few GPU generations. At least if your wallet is a bit slim, like mine is:-p

My chipset type is pushing 10 years next year, and it has survived many generations of GPUs, with only one CPU upgrade (i7-960 to Xeon W3680. Both CPUs were bought used as well).

Though, I think partially this is because a lot of the traditional CPU tasks have been transferred to the GPU over the last decade. And I should point out that I have to OC my system to hell and back in order to not bottleneck the GTX 970.

But a good rule (in my book anyways) is to go for something that can last you at least 5 years.

If your wallet is slim, I will take it for granted you also have kids. I had an i5-2500 rig for flying but I gave it to one of my kids a year back so she could play her games. And with that my flightsiming went on hold. I got an old E6700 PC from a buddy and threw a GTX950 into it and it plays IL2 BAT very well. But even with the decent video card it's showing its age.

I was toying with the idea of an 880k for a budget build, but from everything I read, the i3-6100 beats and allows for room to grow. I have a good Antec case sitting around from my wife's old PC, and I figure an i3 on a good MB with 8GB RAM and my GTX950 card will definitely be a noticeable (and affordable) step up from where I am. After work kicks back in fulltime after the snow, I can grab an i5 during the summer and off the i3 for a few bucks towards the i5. There's no question about an i5-6600 being the desired outcome, but that's $350 here tax included. The i3-6100 is half that; $175 tax in. That $175 difference will get me the PSU and RAM. I want to build on quality parts and I can't afford all the good stuff at once.

Oh, and my grandmother was born in Norway. Cheers!

You're going to invest $175 in a CPU that you're not going to be happy with and you will get maybe a third of that back in return. Secondly, there isn't a large second hand market for newer i3's.

$175 + $350 - (50/50 chance at $58) = save up and buy the i5

With any luck, my computer guy is going to set me up this week with an i5-2400 with the MB/RAM/PSU and HD he found from one of his sources. It's an old Lenovo office PC and my GTX 950 won't fit in it, but I have a good Antec case sitting around and it's just a matter of transferring the parts. Might even get him to throw in an SSD.

An i5-2400/GTX950 should make for a serviceable machine until I can afford a new i5 rig this summer.

Hopefully this pans out. I want to fly!

Bummer, just got it loaded up and now I have to go to work.

In any case, on ultra settings(!), with clouds, with just the one plane in the air, the experience is completely fluid on a dual core E6700 2.66 Ghz/4GB RAM/GTX950. Haven't flown over any large towns or cities, but over open landscape, taking a few shots at the trees and such, it is very smooth. I admit to being surprised and impressed.

Can't wait to get back and see just how much I can get away with on this rig.

I actually ran the game off of my raid 0 the other day (2x 1tb wd blue 72k rpm hard drives) and for this game mainly did not notice a whole lot slower load times or any texture load in compared to the SSD. I tried a couple of heavier games and I could practically go boil the kettle while waiting.

The 2400 is what, 3.1ghz? It does use more power than a newer I5, but it will do you fine for il2 bos. I ran il2 bos on an old amd 965be when I first had this game and it ran well. I think for il2 an I7 is overkill as long as you pair your I5 with a decent graphics card, but your 950 that's about the same spec as my 760 will get the job done at 1920 x 1080 on ultra.

8GB ram is plenty too for Il2 and most other games.

Hope you have fun though, at least it works :)

AMD FX 8120 eight Core 3.1GHz Win10 12 GB RAM Video is AMD Radeon HD7450 with Thrustmaster .... almost locks up trying to run BOS. Any hope for this system? I play alone. Would Video upgrade to GTX 1060 3GB help?

Howdy,

Yeah, the 2400 is 3.1 with a bit of a turbo boost on top. 3.4 I think.

I watched a bunch of videos comparing the i5-2400 to more modern CPUs (like the i3-6100 and the i5-6400) and as long as the video card was a 1050 or less, the difference in FPS was for the most part minimal. Once you hit a 1060 card, the 2400 definitely started to show its limitations. So with my GTX950, it should be a nice match. The system my computer guy found only has 4GB DDR3, so I would need 4 more, but beyond that, it's just a parts swap. With the extra 4GB RAM, the total would run around $300 and I even get a guarantee once his tech-weinie throws it all together. Not so bad. And if I get very lucky and ever get my hands on a used I7-2600 at a decent price, that would make a fine budget rig I think.

With my 2.66 Ghz E6700, I'm getting 35 -40 FPS in IL2 with ultra settings.... as long as I'm alone. Throw in a train demolition and it drops to 20 at times. But it's worth it. This really is a very nice sim.
