[SOLVED] Stuttering - Steam (possibly standalone too) gtx760 factory oc.

Hi all.

As per title - Confusing stuttering.

Average fps 130 quiet - 50 in busy areas.

Sometimes if I go to Starlingrad fps will drop, won't stabilize, stutter and even when you fly to an empty part it still stutters.

I was learning to land the La5 today and re-loaded the mission about 10 times starting off 100+ and at one point dropping to 40 that felt like 10, reload come to same spot and butter smooth. At one point the game pretty much ground to a stuttering halt and I had to re-start the game (pc showed no signs of fault)

Sometimes alt tabbing works, but it comes on at random whether in an open field with nothing or over a big town.

I run the game on ultra @ 1920x1080 windowed (I had same issues on standalone and changing to windowed sort of fixed it) and I expect some frame drops because the old graphics card, but when I fly one time in an area where it's 100fps and another time the same area it's 30fps makes no sense.

Not having this issue with other games.

specs for ref

gpu  asus gtx 760 2gb oc

cpu  i54690k stock.

ram 16GB

Game runs from an SSD. Il2 version 2.008

w10 pro

Cheers folks.

the game has some issues.

but have you setup a profile for the game yet.
Pretty much ALL games under nvidia card NEED their own profile made up in Nvidia control panel

Really? I've never set one up for any game before on this card I've had in 3 or more years owned and I've been playing more modern stuff on it without issues. I guess I'll have a look at the profile when I get home.

I've also tried testing it with fps unlimited and limited to 120. I might try limiting it to 60.

I can try V synch too, although that kill the performance on most games on my low setup.

I'll re-install the case fan to eliminate heat related down clocking and verify temps with speedfan and crack the case open to verify its free of dust.

I'll check what drivers it is currently on and make sure they are up to date.

I don't think any of these checks are necessary, but at least if I check them all I can verify that the pc is running correctly.

It's also not a steam issue as the game is the same once you are through the steam launcher. I can try turning the steam overlay off to be certain its not interfering with this game and I can verify the game files.

I will update this thread once I have done all my tests because maybe one of these will fix it, but I saw threads on the 780s so maybe its just a issue with the whole 7xx line on this game.

Hi Guys.

Still on the steam version.

Just to let anyone reading this that I think I almost solved my issue by turning v sync on - It's not perfect though. Settings as before, ultra, ssao, hdr, 1920x1080, windowed, fps limited to 120, aa x 4, distant landscape x 4 & distant grass. I enabled the fan in the back of the case. I was going to add the side fan, but there is not enough room in my matx case for it to fit and since nothing else is having this issue I doubted overheating was a problem.

Loaded a quick mission, decided to play with 1ai vs 4ai bombers over Stalingrad with trains, trucks, aa and tanks turned on. Mid day, clear, medium level clouds starting in the air and using the La-5 again.

v sync off

1st Run - no issues, smooth. fps reading around 110. destroyed bombers.

ended mission from menu, went back to quick mission, re-ran same scenario

2nd Run - initially slight stuttering on contact, heavy stuttering going into the formation, still stuttering with formation behind me and not looking at it.

v sync on - after game re-start

1st run - no issues

Reloaded mission from in the game

2nd run - no issues. fps down to a stable 60, a minor hitch, but the game recovers quickly.

3rd run - mostly OK, a hitch for 1 second and then fully smooth as took out the other bombers

4th run - again, mostly OK, I take out one bomber, mix in the pack with them shooting and no hitching or nothing, I see a line of trucks and decide to go in for those. There is a small hitch as I leave the bombers, but as I dive it's gone and while full guns and explosions going over the trucks a stable, smooth fps, coming back up there is a minor hitch as I use an external view to observe the ruins that goes away quickly.

The outcome is that while not perfect the hitches or stutters are not huge enough to ruin aiming really or knock you out of a complicated turn as before the stuttering would get so bad it became un-playable at times. I say it's 1 second, but you know what I mean, it's not quite enough to totally ruin a shot, but it's obvious when you feel and see it.

Still going to fiddle with some other things to see I can eliminate the hitching completely, but I fear it may be out of my control.

I've attached a picture of the hardware monitor and expanded the relevant minimum and maximums on the hardware in case you are interested or in case it helps anyone if they have an other ideas. I can live with it now, but I don't see why it should be doing it unless it's a driver issue.

Use something like MSI afterburner to check GPU VRAM useage during a mission/flight, depending on settings I can often see up to 3.5 GB of VRAM being used, when video card runs out of VRAM this can induce stutters, some settings turned down, should fix this with some experimentation, to keep below 2 GB (if this is in fact an issue)

just a thought

Thanks Dakpilot I will try this.

It was odd I loaded game to test a different way to land la-5 (because bad it) and loaded at 300m, clear skies. Game was perfect till it dropped to the ground at the runway in pit view and did the worst stuttering ever.

I had firefox open with a youtube video paused, my emails and some other tabs. Either co-incidence or something else the next 5 runs were fine in the game. No alt tabs or anything between re-loads. Really weird.

I was playing around with Rise of flight, DCS world and Il2 clod TF modded and had none of the same experience (all via steam and all pretty much maxed out. All smooth)

OK - Re the last settings I had before Loaded the bom campaign in an Il2. Awful headache inducing stuttering - I re-load it several times and it still does it, tried a lighter mission and problem still there.

Applied full screen mode - Reloaded same Il2 campaign mission and smooth!

I think I've fixed this. I did eventually today decide to have a play around with nvidia control panel. Cranked most of the settings right up for Il2 in the control panel. Turned the gpu setting to max performance in power setting and I got a better looking il2 bos and a better performing one!

Still getting exactly the same fps ranges, just doesn't seem to die out on me now when it hits indicated mid 40 fps. If I go nuts with the camera I can make it drop a few frames, but overall the game has better AA and runs just as smooth.

I expect it will never be perfect, but this to me is as good as it's going to get.
