Hey gang,

So in preparation for the upcoming VR support and finally getting back into this sim, I started to go in and map all my joysick axis and buttons. Now previously the last time I flew the sim, which has been quite a while ago, I used TARGET for my button mapping on my Warthog, but now wanted to get away from using it especially as I have a Gunfighter coming anyway.

Couple things I am having trouble with, and my apologies if I am just overlooking something simple.

1: I can't seem to be able to assign a modifier along with button press? For instance say I want yaw trim right to be paddle held in whilst pushing POV hat to right.

2: Can't seem to get my toe brakes axis assigned, no trouble assigning pedal axis but toe brakes not seeming to be recognized.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Well I got the wheel brakes figured out - I think. Appears the key was having them depressed app half way prior to setting them up as the axis assignment.

Lol thanks anyway! That one was a little tricky.

I took another look, I am assuming  one can not assign a button as a modifier in the game GUI...

If anyone knows different let me know.

Thanks,

Depends on the stick I think. I own a VKB Gladiator and one of the buttons on that is designated as a kind of 'shift' button (unless you make it something else) and you also get another button that adds a second 'layer' (for want of a better word) of controls so that many of the buttons can have four values depending on which combo you press.

Yes but you are doing that through the VKB software correct?

I was just wondering if it could be done in the game controller setup, does not appear so.

Not at all, it's native to the stick. You need to use the VKB software to remap that 'shift' button to be something other than that.

I just found a link to the infosheet I remember seeing

So in the game, you can assign a  press and hold that shift button on your stick then press say POV Hat Right and have it do one thing, then press just POV hat right and have it do another? Set it up in the game controller setup this way?

Please see my post edit above with the suggested default key assignments for the Gladiator and Gladiator Pro. The major difference is that the Gladiator Pro does not have the twist-stick rudder control.

This functionality may be bespoke to the controller boards on the stick for all I know. It's a great feature though.

Ok thanks for the info!

Gotta run out for a while will have a better look upon return.

I tried, I can't get the warthog paddle to work as a modifier either. I don't use it for that I just wanted to see if I could get it to work. I think the game only shows the control/shift alt keys as that, but see's the paddle as button 4 on the hog so it thinks that the one you want to use.

Yeah I could not figure it out, I know in some others one can assign buttons as modifiers or shift states but apparently not in this one.

No biggie I can get by without it I am sure. It is just nice as it really expands the number of commands one can assign to buttons.

Thanks for trying!

Ok got some time to take a look at the image, it would appear the actual shift and mode states of that stick determines what the button number is for that particular button, so assigning in game it just registers of course by the button number.

I guess that is fine, I myself would probably prefer being able to just assign a button directly as a modifier and/or switch in the game. Also of course the Gunfighter will not have all those buttons, but when I get the new grip for it when it is released at least I will have a few on the stick itself.

Thanks for posting!

What would help for those that want to use a modifier other than ctrl/shift/alt, put a button in the service part of the set up you could assign as a modifier. So you could program "Joy_0 button 4" to a modifier state. Then the game would see it as a ctrl/alt/shift button instead of a "Joy_0  button 4.

hi Don. About 6 months ago I tried a program called Voice Attack. I think it cost me 10-20 Bucks . I have been using it in another Game. It is a Fantastic Piece of Software and its User Interface can understood quickly.

You can Bind Commands to Left\right Shift or any Keyboard Strokes....to give you a quick example : Right CNTRL+F1+7+1== One word from your voice.

Don , I would imagine with VR , Voice Recognition is going to Increase... Why Fumble with Keystrokes ? Keep your Primary Flight Controls at your finger tips and set your Secondry Commands to Voice.

I haven't used it in BOS yet. The other game, Ive had amazing Results.

That would certainly be nice!

Yes I have read up on it and plan to add it here soon especially now with VR, mainly to help with voice commands like ATC/Wingman.

I like having as much functionality on my joystick as I can get though, which is why I really like the ability to assign any button to be used as a modifier - ie press and hold the modifier button whilst pressing another button gives another commands, versus just pressing the button by itself. I always used the Paddle on Warthog joystick for this. And if not too cumbersome will do the same with the new grip offering by VKB for the Gunfighter.

Can't see myself having to press a keyboard shift or whichever whilst pressing a button to accomplish the same. Or use a voice command whilst doing so as well to create a modified button press.

But again no biggie, especially with the WWII birds in BoX I am sure I can make do with the available buttons/hats I have without a modifier, will probably just use a few more on my Warthog throttle that I usually don't use. I do like though to keep many of my common commands assigned the same across different sims.

Makes it a little easier for this feeble mind to remember what each button press does lol.

Thanks for the feedback!

You can manually edit the 'current.actions' file found in /data/input with an editor like notepad++.

Use the in-game settings GUI to set your intended shift button as a random command so you can see its name in the editor, then type it before the button command you want shifted with a + between them.

Look to an already assigned command with a LSHIFT (or similar) to see the syntax used.

It's a mild inconvenience to do this manually, but I didn't have many commands to change and it saves me using more software to program my joystick.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input Bear.

I have gotten by so far fine without it, so will probably just hang on until if and when we get the software from Virpil to keep things simple.

Bear tip  (edit 'current.actions' file found in /data/input) work well - so people wishing a modifier in "pinky" button could stop moaning about and use this solution - until a more easy don't came.

Example:

Button 3 in my joystick fire Cannons.

Pressing and holding  Button 1 and then Button 3  = wheel brakes.

Button_modifier.jpg

Of course, this button "joy1_b1" is not used for any game function.

Thing to consider for edit the file: for the game joystick buttons start in 0 so:

joystick button 1 = joy1_b0

joystick button 2 = joy1_b2

...

For example in Warthog and MongoosT 50 grips the button for this modifier  - the obvious pinky, is Button 3 in the first and Button 4 in the second, so in the file use, respectively: b2 and b3

VPCButton_Map.jpg

Joystick is not necessarily the "joy1", could be "joy2"... this depends on how Windows see then relatively to other controllers, based on VIOD/PID numbers, but this is easy to know in Keymapping options.
