Hi everyone,

Need a little help please. ;)

Uninstalled the game on Steam some months ago. Bought a new PC and tried to reinstall on Steam.

I reinstalled the game on Steam, deleted all folders in the steam folder "D:\Programme\Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad" and replaced them by all folders I backuped before deinstalling.

When I launch the game it says: Please update on new game version #10005. But how? I do a right klick on game in Steam but can't choose update game. Settings in Steam update of game are that the game is kept up to date.

So what is there to do?

Thank you very much for help!

aaaw man i had a similar problem after a fresh windows install, all that could fix it was reinstalling windows again. I tried all types of solutions for a couple fo weeks to no avail.  hope it helps!!

Not really. I did a fresh install of windows 10 a week ago. ;)

To be honest: BoS via Steam sucks. Original IL-2: no problems updating whatsoever... In former days things used to be easier...Whole game IL-2 saved on a USB drive and you were done!

Did I choose the right way to restore my settings as explained above? Is there a wiki somewhere how to save and restore?

Sounds like the Steam version is kind of a hassle. Should have just bought it direct :)

Are you launching the game directly or through Steam or through the IL-2 launcher? If you start via the launcher it should auto detect your version state and start the update process. Not sure if you were doing it that way or no.

? I bought the original DVD, but it installed via Steam. Is there another way to play the game? Why are there different ways?

Hey there!

This is my first post on this forum, so I hope I can start with a good deed!

Did you already try to verify the integrity of the game's files through Steam? If you didn't, it's definitely worth a shot!

In your Steam library, right click on BoS and select 'Properties', then a new window should open up. In this window you should see an option called 'Local files'. After clicking on that as well you should be presented with several options with one of them being called 'Verify game cache integrity' or something very similar. If you click on it, Steam checks the game's files to find and repair broken ones.

Good luck!

Original DVD? I wasn't aware that there were any DVD copies (except maybe in the Russian market). Are you sure you're talking about IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad or IL-2: Battle of Moscow or are you talking about the original IL-2: Sturmovik series which included Forgotten Battles, Ace Expansion, Pacific Fighters and 1946.

EDIT: It seems to indicate in your original post its IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad.

So now I'm curious as to where DVD copies were sold. Very interesting!

If there is a DVD copy then why set it up with Steam? They added Steam Store support because I think they hoped that it would bring more people in to play. Its a good move to hook up with the store there and some players do use it but if you have the option then I'd avoid it. Its another layer that isn't necessary.

Back to my original question... Have you tried using the Launcher or are you trying to start the game directly? IMHO, the Launcher will probably solve your problem with an update.

I have both Steam and store copies of the game.

I have had absolutely zero problems with Steam - quite the contrary with the store, what with a non-intuitive updater that sometimes takes forever or does not work at all.  Just a week ago I upgraded to a 1TB SSD. This was done by backing up the whole steamapps folder and then copying it into the new location on the new SSD after I had re-downloaded the Steam client. Re-installing BoX and RoF through Steam then took about 5 seconds :) and all my settings were preserved. But then neither needed an update.

My suggestion is to uninstall IL-2 in Steam. Then reinstall from Steam. Run the game with your new installation first. Then you should be able to copy over selected folders  - key inputs etc - from your original back-up copy without any problems.

@unreasonable: Right! I deinstalled the game on Steam and then installed it again and it was on 2.0008. Everything ok so far. Obviously my fault was to replace the whole saved "IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad" folder b e f o r e launching the game.

Which leads me to the important question: What files or folders do I have to restore in the "IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad" Folder of SteamApps exactly to get all my old settings?

@ShamrockOneFive: When Bos came out in Germany, the only way to buy it was the original DVD which installed the game via Steam. No other option. I'm curious to learn what is Launcher, where to get it and what sense it makes with a Steam installation. I find it totally annoying that there are different ways to launch the game and obviously it is not possible to launch it without Steam when you once installed it in Steam. Or am I wrong with this Point?

Glad that worked! On the launching business - TBH if you have a steam installation you may as well just launch it from there - you can do that with a desktop icon linked to IL-2.exe, or use the Steam library, or right click on the Steam icon in task bar and launch from there. There is AFAIK zero benefit to launching in any other way. Some people have a rather old fashioned Steam allergy....

RoF was a bit different because it's launcher also had graphics/audio setting in it - altering render distance for instance, so finding the launcher had some point.

As for what folders - I suspect that nothing in the data folder would break your game if you copied across and that should have all your settings plus missions, skins etc as - but if unsure look in the folders and do it a folder at a time.

Thank you very much indeed unreasonable!

I'm a bit disappointed that I can't find any official hint how to save important game settings and restore them correctly. Not really a fan of try and error. Has no one of you ever bought a new pc in the meantime and was confronted with the same question?

Steam has an option to backup your game files, so that whenever you download a game itll have the same settings and savegames, i dont know how to enabled though since a couple of updates ago but it still does it :)

Already saw this but didn't find "restore game files" nor is it explained in Steam how that works... ;-/

Library - right click on any game you have installed - it is towards the bottom of the menu that pops up.

I did not know about this either, but that is where I found it.

Misunderstandig. I did find "backup game files" in Steam but not "restore game files" or how restoring works. Most irritating to find "backup game files" but nowhere "restore game files"

Left click on "Steam" in top left of main Steam window - next to View-Friends-Games-Help

Click "Backup and Restore Games"......

Thanks a lot unreasonable! Did expect "restore" next to "save" when rightklicking the game in my game library

No problem - I have been helped out often enough when unable to do something because it is cunningly hidden by programmers who like to make the rest of us (aka humans) feel stupid, so happy to pay back.

Pro tip - now in this kind of problem I just ask Google: type in something like "steam backup restore" - nearly always works.

D:\Programme\Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\data\input

This is where your key maps are stored for keyboard, joystick and mouse.

You can also buy the game digital from the official website. It has a launcher that downloads the game, but beyond that the game is exactly the same with the same performance. Steam simply acts as the launcher and allows you to easily backup any game. People tend to use steam because it acts as a single place to use their games and they can integrate with friends who use steam and participate in the steam community and publishers use it as a way to get their game out to more people which comes at a small cost with steam taking a cut of the purchase price. If you buy it from the website you give the makers all the money.

\data\input\current.actions
\data\input\current.devices
\data\input\current.map
\data\input\current.responses
\data\input\devices.txt

4. For backup and restoring your input configuration use saving and copying ONLY for following files:
\data\input\current.actions
\data\input\current.devices
\data\input\current.map
\data\input\current.responses
\data\input\devices.txt
If you will copy other files this may cause incorrect work of the game.

Thanks a lot, guys,

of course I had asked Mr. Google before posting who unfortunately couldn't help, so reasonable "unreasonable" could.  ;)

...data\input ok. But it seems I need other files or folders to save!! For example my graphic settings and HUD settings were gone after just restoring ...data/Input. Obviously they are NOT saved within folder ...data\input. So again (sorry to insist): Which files do I have to save and restore to get ALL my old settings completely back?

Quite puzzling and no lucky solution that there are 4 ways to buy the game. There are 12 or 14 pages in the manual to describe the different buying and installation ways. This is a mess and shows it is too complicated. Add the hundreds of postings where peopla bought DLC and Add-ons and chose the wrong way to install. This really sucks. I was used to "old" IL-2, where all the game data was in ONE folder on my own pc which I could save and without installing the game can fire it up just from my external USB drive.

Some say that folder "IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad" did not contain ALL necessary game files when playing via Steam. Right or wrong? A bit difficult to understand the logic behind.

I'd say wrong based on a quick comparison I did. Il2 clod with the team fusion mod does put some files in Documents

For Il2 battle of starlingrad, etc for your graphics, login details, sound and interface settings you'll need Startup.cfg found in your case the location below.

D:\Programme\Steam\steamapps\common\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\Startup.cfg

But using the backup and restore function in steam would probably be quicker imo.

Thank you very much, BFBunny!. This was helpful too.

I prefer doing an additional manual backup if things shouldn't work via Staem backup. Call me suspicious ;)

If the folder "IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad" contains all necessary files and folders it should be possible to start the game without Steam when using a copy pf the folder?

No problem, it's been fun :salute:

I can confirm that I moved the game to a different hard drive and if you run launcher.exe with steam exited:

IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\bin\game\launcher.exe

It will run the game with all your settings. Might need to right click and run as administrator.

Please note that because the steam version gets its updates from steam the version from steam does not contain the standalone updater so will never get updates if you only run the game this way.
