​Hi Hartmann, apologies about doing a template you are already working on.  I don't mean to annoy anyone but there is always room for more templates as choice is good.  The same goes for any aircraft I have done templates for, the fact they are done does not make them off limits for other template artists like yourself.

I kinda have to agree with Bullets.

Painted metal usually has a bit of a shine to it. Not completely shiny like bare polished metal but there should still be a shine.

The paint on your planes looks very dull, more like painted wood to be honest. 

 

Apart from that, it looks very nice.

That we must only use the work of the first person who called "dibs" regardless of whether its any good or not? I didn't ask you to do it. Noone did - you took it on yourself.  You have no right or reason to complain in this way.

BTW - ICDP came right out and said he was doing this a couple of weeks ago - I saw no objections only positive comments.

 

The more choice the better for all. Personally, having seen the quality of his other work I for one am VERY happy that he is doing this and the fact Jason has personally asked his to do this also speaks volumes. 

 

I just hope he's not put off and bullied into stopping by the bruised egos out there and realises the support his work has in the community.

Cars? Really? That's a gloss cote over the paint or in the paint Bullets - not the metal showing though. Have a look at some old WW2 colour pics and compare em to you neighbours BMW 4 series....

 

And I'm not sure how anyhow can form an opinion of the finish from a still image either.

Thanks for the feedback Bullets and BHH, I get what you both mean now.  While pretty much every image I have seen of the P-40 from WWII era shows a very matte finish, I do have some sheen on mine when viewed at certain angles.

 

My screenshots were taking with the sun almost overhead (11:30am) and with the camera positioned in a way that shine was eliminated.  Remember this is s template I am working on and as such can be tailored to each individuals preferences.

You are welcome to make it and do it however you wish. That's great. However, I have a need to produce templates fairly quickly and ICDP has been working with me to crank them out. I like his work and I like his speed. This will get quality templates to the community quicker than waiting for 20 separate artists who can't work as fast and have 20 different styles. Others may produce even better templates and that's more than welcome by me and everyone. But somehow each artist "reserving" a template as their own doesn't help me and my goal.

 

Anyways, everyone lighten up and let's just enjoy each other's creations.

Aircraft paints usually aren't totally flat and do have a mild shine at least. Partly because of performence (matt paint has roughness which induces drag) but also because most military aircraft use clear coats over the colour coats to seal them and create a protection layer which also makes it more shiny by smoothing the surface. Continous use can also smooth the paint over time due to fine particals in the air 'sanding' the paint off.

 

There are numerous reaosons why some aircraft appear matt on pictures. Lighting could be weak, paint could be covered by dirt or the clear coat could be damage exposing the more matte colour paint below. These pictures show that some P-40 did still have a slightly shiny finish even though they partly were heavily used and worn out aircraft.

 

A good modern example: Little Jeanne. Comparison of 'shinyness' in weak and strong lighting.

 

 

 

 

On topic: Nice to see you get supported for your effort ICDP. I know you don't want harm to other template creators and if you should decide to move on to the Stuka / Ju 52 I'd be fine with sharing assets / sources if wished.

Thanks for clarifying ICDP   One last nitpick and this is purely a personal taste is that the colours could do with being a tiny bit more vibrant as they are very dull, its like there is a layer of grey over each colour.    But if that's your style and how you want it to look then it will still look amazing.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys.

 

I have made some weathering tweaks and some alpha channel tweaks based on the comments.  The final templates will of course be adjustable to your own personal tastes.

 

I will get a 4k normal maps done over the next day or two and release everything in one go.
